FIGHT THE BLIGHT | Metalheads Against Depression If you’ve been to a metal show recently, you may have noticed a growing movement in which band members and their fans are opening up about their struggles with depression, how it affects them or those around them, and how music has been a positive outlet or anchor in their darkest moments. That movement has inspired this campaign by Mike T. Bain (who lives with Major Depressive Disorder) to help raise awareness about depression and why it is called ‘’The Silent Killer’’. The more people know about this disease and how common it is, the more we can do to fight it and let those who suffer know that THEY ARE NOT ALONE. If you’d like to join the cause and represent FIGHT THE BLIGHT to raise awareness, t-shirts are available for purchase through Threadless, with 10% of proceeds (plus an additional donation from Threadless) going to the International Association for Suicide Prevention. I've talked about how I lost motivation without the 24hr events to aim for. It was a journey for me, every ride a step closer to that goal. Without that I didn't see a reason to ride. I needed something to aim for and I'm happy to say next year I have a new goal to do just that. Since 2017 I've had a dream that I've never achieved. A goal that I've joked about thinking it would never happen. Well next year I want to make it happen. That goal is to complete a 100+ mile ride. So I'm going to start a whole new journey from now to motivate me. For those that don't know I always entered events under the nickname Phoenix as cycling saved my life and gave me a second chance. I want to live up to that nickname over the next year. I'm going to start from scratch and work my way up to achieving that target. It's a huge challenge to me but for the first time in a long time I have a reason to keep fighting. Do I really believe I can go from 10-15 mile rides to completing the century? Started February break with some fun as we road tripped to Nashville to see @disturbed (note to self, don’t get wheelchair accessible seats on the floor unless in the front row as Bobby literally saw none of the awesome concert, but he still enjoyed the music) We had some great eats, saw some sights and met Diego’s parents for a delicious home cooked meal! Dean als Soldat hat sich mit den ersten Sätzen, die Cassidy Cane über ihn verfasst hat, in mein Herz geschlichen und das hat sich auch bis zum letzten Wort nicht geändert. Soviel kann ich euch verraten! DIe Thematik des Armeesoldaten, der durch das Erlebte im Krieg gar nicht weiß, wie er richtig zurück ins Leben finden soll, hat mir sehr gut gefallen und Cassidy Cane hat es auf eine Art und Weise umgesetzt, die mich unglaublich berührt hat. Durch den Tod seiner [ Ex - ] Freundin und der Geburt der Tochter wird er in eine Welt geworfen, für die er gar nicht bereit ist. Diesen Zwiespalt zwischen Aufgeben wollen und Funktionieren müssen, hat Cassidy Cane unglaublich gut beschrieben und ich wollte Dean so oft einfach nur an mich drücken. Und dann gab es da noch Morgan. Sie ist von Anfang an da. An seiner Seite. Sie fängt ihn auf, sie macht ihm Mut. Und sie wäscht ihm auch den Kopf, wenn er sich mal wieder zu sehr in etwas hineinsteigert oder sich wieder der letzte Neandertaler benimmt. Sie ist sein Ruhepol, sein Fels in der Brandung und ihm nicht nur im Umgang mit dem Baby eine große Hilfe. This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine... I talk about guiding lights a lot but this is literally a guiding light for me. This is my old Exposure Six Pack. It's dented, scratched and old but it's so much more than just a light to me. In 2019 I did the Twentyfour12 24hr solo for charity as I thought it would be my final ever event due to my deteriorating health. Exposure lights were amazing and let me borrow one of their demo lights for free. The best light I could ever afford was a £20 Chinese one so when I got to experience a 2019 Exposure light I felt like I had finally got somewhere in my cycling life. Even if it was only for a few hours. I mean who wouldnt feel like that when the light I borrowed was worth more than my bike (in fact it was 4 times the value of my bike 😂). That event left me with so many amazing memories and it gave me a goal to beat my health so I could do an event that would warrant owning a light that good. That would become a dream. I knew I'd never be able to afford one like that but I saved up every penny I could and found this old Six Pack for £100 on Ebay. It wasn't in the best condition and doesn't even have a case (maybe one day I can find one for it) but despite its age it was better than anything I've ever been able to own and after #exposurelights helped me with my fundraising I desperately wanted to own something of theirs. I was determined that I would return to the 24hr races just so I could use this light and this would be my guide through the darkness of the night. Buying this was me telling myself that it would happen when I felt like there was no chance. I couldn't afford to spend that much money on something if I didn't have belief that I'd use it. Now every time I get out in the dark with it, it just reminds me of everything I'm fighting for, the hope that one day the 24hr races will be in reach again and I'll be there. Even if I can never afford a newer model this light will forever remind me that once upon a time I didn't believe I'd ever have this and I own this now because I believe I'll get another chance. I like to think that this year I made the most out of what energy I had, it's been a really tough year for me personally, I've struggled so much internally probably more than I'm used to, on the surface I've been, as they say "living it up" abit, but internally I've been probably beating myself up more than usual, I like to think I did achieve a fair bit this year, there is still quite a way to go, but I sought out the things that give me that positive kick in life, my love of music, seeing my boys in @walkwaysband and @insearchofsun , attending Download to see my brother @davidmdraiman throwdown with us Brits, I met @skindredmusic and @smashintopiecesofficial . My love of exploring and finding gems in the world, by going abroad to see my dear friends in Iceland, I went out to Amsterdam and Greece with my best friend my sister @charlottestevenz , I got reacquainted with my love of scuba diving. Most importantly I got to have amazing experiences with my friends, my family and the friends that have become family, all that time in everyones company has been very much needed this year, that random "hello" or hug may have been all it took to make my day. And my brother from Rotterdam flew over for some hang time and man did I miss your company @naitonii .
