Dragged Across Concrete (2018): A+ Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn are suspended cops in dire financial straits who scheme to rob a thief in the act of a robbery but get caught up in a cluster when the crime goes sideways in a big way. Wow, this film! Most movies are on a clock and don't have time for anything not germane to the plot. The beauty of this film is the amount of time it (and you) spend with the characters, getting to know them, luxuriating in small moments and details, many of which are dead ends and don't advance the story but invest you in what happens to them. Similarly, in the average film, you can generally see where the story is going and you may even mentally check out. Not so in this film, which is constantly unpredictable and builds to an edge-of-the-seat standoff in which you cannot tell how the events will turn. I always love Gibson and he and Vaughn have great chemistry. Listening to their banter is half the fun because the writing and lines are terrific. All the supporting cast are great, down to the smallest role. Tory Kittles, in particular, is superlative and holds the screen whenever he's on it. I'm not sure that I took a breath during the third act of this film; it's that good. What can you say about Mel Gibson's oeuvre? Maybe all I can do is point you to a couple of films you may have missed. First, as a director, his Apocalypto (2006) is really unique and set in a world seldom seen in the movies. Next, Payback (1999) is one of his trademark comic/action roles but turned up to 11 with hilariously dark action and dialog. Movie Review - Guy Ritchie exploded onto my radar last year. He’s got two movies in my top 10 from the year, including this one at number 1! On rare occasions, I’ll finish a movie and my thought will be, “That was beautiful.” This was one of those times. The Covenant is perfectly named and impactful. It’s often a nail-biting experience but it’s also heartwarming and may even put some tears in your eyes. The music is beautiful and stands out as it creates the right atmosphere. Jake Gyllenhaal has quickly become a favorite actor of mine, and his performance here is intense and dramatic and everything I love from Gyllenhaal. The rest of the cast hold their own as well. Especially Dar Salim who plays a character who is immediately lovable. The dedication that the two leading characters have for one another is touching to behold. I know this isn’t a long review, but don’t let my few words downplay how captivated I was by this story. Movie Review - At number 2 is a movie that reminds us not to give up on superhero movies yet. There have been so many misfires recently but James Gunn worked some magic with Guardians Vol 3. As expected, Vol 3 is weird, funny, and exciting. Unexpectedly, it's dark, violent, and gory at times. It's a solid conclusion to the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, I'm just surprised it kept a PG-13 rating. Vol. 3 is the wildest Guardians of the Galaxy yet. I loved that it’s also more emotional. Chris Pratt does a great job conveying a man whose heart is shattered. Rocket's story is heart-wrenching. I found my eyes watering up a few different times. For many of these characters, they're the best they've ever been. Most notable are Nebula and Mantis as they get to step out of the shadows and shine in this story. The funny scenes got some real laughter out of me. It's not an easy thing to make a movie that's dark and emotionally heavy, but also funny, but James Gunn pulls it off. Movie Review - Netflix is proving that they’re the superior streaming service with movies like this one. Reptile is a lengthy crime/mystery/thriller and I was hooked for every minute of it. Just when you think you’re approaching the end of the story, you’ll find you’re only halfway through the movie, meaning a lot of crazy twists are on the way. The paranoia is palpable. The movie does a great job at making you think just about anyone could be behind the crime. Benicio Del Toro is simply perfect as the leading man. He’s a character you immediately like and respect. His quiet, thoughtful, and moody nature make him someone that draws you in and holds your attention. The whole cast is phenomenal. I can’t talk enough about how each actor understood their role and acted it out with precision and intensity. Justin Timberlake and Alicia Silverstone especially deserve to be highlighted. The story is a crazy one, but the great acting and stellar movie-making sell it. What hooks us for the first while is the process of solving the mystery, and then this gets added onto with edge of your seat suspense. As things are revealed, the tension is continually cranked up. Movie Review - First “Reptile” and now “Leave the World Behind;” Netflix is raising the standard for streaming service movies. It dawned on me as I sat there how cool it was that I was watching the likes of Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, and Kevin Bacon in a Netflix thriller! A great cast plus great storytelling equals a movie that is a winner. It’s not often that I would describe a thriller as being scary, but Leave the World Behind is. I don’t think it’s false to say most Americans feel pretty untouchable in terms of being invaded by an enemy army, so watching this story unfold is pretty unsettling. It unsettles us by making us feel vulnerable. It’s also very interesting how it unfolds. There’s self-driving cars blocking the highways, ships running aground, and planes falling from the sky. It makes for a suspenseful disaster movie. The tension and fear that the characters feel is palpable. Not knowing what exactly is happening and who it is you can trust keeps everyone on edge. And of course, difficult people only make things worse. There’s plenty of those in this story, but the good that people are capable of is represented here as well. This movie tells an enthralling story, but I was certain it had to be based on the first book of a series. It introduces us to characters and sets up the scenario in such a way that a sequel feels almost inevitable. However, I was surprised to find that this movie is an adaptation of a standalone book (at least for now). I for one would love a follow up film. Movie Review - Tom Cruise and these Mission Impossible movies continue to delight. Dead Reckoning is another great installment in a series of films that never seem to miss. Where it shines brightest are its thrilling action sequences. I got literal goosebumps when Cruise jumped that motorbike off the cliff. And then there was the insane train sequence that had me on the edge of my seat. Before the movie starts, Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie appear to announce that they make these movies for the big screen, and that is indeed apparent. But it’s more than just a visual spectacle. The music is epic. There’s a nice sprinkle of humor here and there that got some chuckles out of me. There’s reoccurring characters that are always good to see again. Seeing Part 1 in the title had me dreading a cliffhanger that would leave me unsatisfied and frustrated in the end. I was very much relieved that there was a real satisfactory conclusion to this part of a bigger story. To the filmmakers, I say thank you for this. However, the survivors soon find that Death will not be denied.” The Review: In the final Final Destination film (thus far, with Bloodlines slated for release in 2025), Death spares no one - but is clever in its twists and turns throughout the film for the first time since 2006’s FD3. Though there is still some shoddy CGI work that seems left over from the incredibly awful fourth 3D film, it remains only in the opening premonition sequence and is snuffed out immediately after. This film is a massive improvement over its predecessor and, for me, is not far behind the original film in terms of general charm and likeability. The cast is strong enough that you either love them or love to hate them, the majority of death sequences are well put-together and strikingly shot, and the hedge maze the viewer is put in in the final fifteen minutes of the film captivated me from start to finish. This was a film I didn’t want to be over so quickly. In fact, that ending may be my only other gripe about this film - everything happens so quickly that it feels like a rushed afterthought, even if the idea behind it is clever. FD3 had similar ideas when it came time to end the film, but FD3 succeeds in creating a new societal culture whereas this film comes up just short of reality. Aside from my admittedly minor gripes, however? Movie Review - Dungeons and Dragons was significantly more fun than I anticipated. I laughed quite a bit at the well-balanced humor. People probably think of Ryan Reynolds as Hollywood’s funny guy, but Chris Pine proves yet again that he’s worth considering for that title. His charm and charisma automatically make a movie easier to watch. Furthermore, I was not expecting Michelle Rodrigos to shine as bright as she did with her almost Drax-like character. Her character is funny, strong, and has heart. All the characters, big and small, are interesting and fun to follow. The fight scenes are exciting and well-choreographed. The scenery is gorgeous. I felt at times like I was watching a movie based on my all-time favorite video game; The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. It also has some lighthearted The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones vibes at times. When done well, fantasy is an exciting and even magical genre. I was impressed by how each scene of this film managed to give us something truly interesting, exciting, or fun to watch. Night Shift (2023) Gwen Taylor, played by Phoebe Tonkin, begins her first shift at this quaint motel cozily named “The All Tucked Inn,” where one might pass by on a midnight dreary seeking moments of shut eye. Soon, she realizes there is more than meets the eye in this small sized psychological horror. With rats and cockroaches scattering, bright neon lights, and a big empty, dirty pool, the film is oozing with creepy motel details. The production design, lighting effects, and cinematography are some of the best parts of the film, bolstering an otherwise poorly written screenplay. Much of the dialogue feels forced and the foreshadowing is too on the nose. Phoebe’s performance feels very one note throughout, and maybe that’s a director’s choice considering the narrative, but it would have been nice to see more variety of emotion. Her subtle, monotone deliveries help her supporting actors stand out. Lamorne Morris, playing Teddy, craftily carries the comedic relief, while Madison Hu portrays a woman with mysterious intrigue. As a whole, the film is a slow burn storyline punctuated with supernatural plot points and at other times, some humor. Though it mostly remains tonally consistent, there are moments that feel out of character. The music is nothing special, but does elicit an uneasy atmosphere and even though there are some noticeable editing inconsistencies, it’s nothing that’s detrimental to the storytelling. While the film strives to distinguish a familiar narrative, the writing and direction ultimately holds it back. All the elements boil down to a pretty average film that is honestly hit or miss. If you can sit back and simply enjoy the visuals, you might like this! War for the Planet of the Apes (2017): B- Two years after the events of the prior film, human military forces led by Woody Harrelson who have been hunting Caesar (Andy Serkis) and his colony finally find them. I love this series of films, but I must admit that this is the weakest entry. It has few of the big questions posed in the prior films and is more of an action film, complete with a wacky ape (Steve Zahn) for comic relief. At the same time, these are the quibbles of someone spoiled by the first two films; there's still a lot here to like, and it's very well done. The CGI and motion capture continue to amaze. Karin Konoval's Maurice, a stalwart in the prior films, is particularly captivating here. And, those versed in the original Planet of the Apes (1968) will find the narrative device used here to advance the story toward that world to be clever and nicely done. The Final Destination (2009) AKA Final Destination 4 Starring: Bobby Campo, Shantel VanSanten, Mykelti Williamson 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑 The Blurb: “While enjoying a day at the track, Nick O’Bannon has a horrific premonition of him and his friends dying in a freak race-car accident at the speedway where they’re enjoying an afternoon race. Mere seconds before the vision comes true, he manages to convince his friends and several other parties to leave. Although they cheat death then, the survivors each begin to meet a grisly end, and Nick attempts to find a way to escape a similar fate and cheat death.” The Review: One would think the fourth film in a franchise as successful and as positively-received (at least by fans) as Final Destination would flourish, taking its namesake and running with it to create another successful, memorable, fine sequel within the franchise. What one wouldn’t think or expect would be for said fourth film to be the most commercially successful while also being heinously awful. Sadly, there’s no other way to put it - this movie is bad. The initial inciting incident isn’t one of most people’s everyday fears; the actions and decisions characters make are stereotypical almost to the point of parody; the lead actor (whom I loved in the Scream series) is directed to have about as much personality as Bella Swan in the first Twilight film; CGI is extremely overused and makes the film feel cheap no matter how seriously it attempts to treat some situations. I wish I could say more positive things about this movie. The only likeable character, George, had an extremely weak ending and the only extremely fun scene that got me on the edge of my seat was the car wash, which then ended in a way that made no sense, and again cheapened the feel of the film. 2.25 out of 5 moons, rounded down.
