Rex's Single, "Hot Love", The Band Went On A US Tour. While In New York in March 1971, Frontman/Guitarist Marc Bolan Asked Drummer Bill Legend To Help Him Brainstorm Drum Patterns For A Song Idea That Would Later Become "Get It On". Bolan Claimed To Have Written The Song Out Of His Desire To Record Chuck Berry's 1959 Song "Little Queenie", & Said That The Riff Was Taken From The Tune. In Fact, A Slightly Edited Line (& Meanwhile, I'm Still Thinking) From "Little Queenie" Is Said At The Fade Of "Get It On". Rex with an eponymous release in 1970. Electric Warrior, their 6th LP, was their 1st chart topper in the UK & their 1st to make a major splash internationally. Headed by guitarist, lead singer, & primary songwriter #MarcBolan, T. Rex's breakthru album "blended irresistible pop hooks with a wholly original rock sensibility," as the original liner notes (unattributed) suggest. The LP was a precursor to '70s #GlamRock, showcasing a lavish taste for extravagant & sensual fashions, most notably referenced on #Motivator: "Love the clothes you wear, I love the broken crown, the 1 you stole from the king... In your bedroom, love the golden cat, I love the velvet hat, the 1 that caused a revolution." Despite the fairy tale pastures they conjure, Electric Warrior's melodic structures are not overly bombastic but rather appealingly basic & stripped-down with little to no distortion on rhythm guitars that add to the rhythm -- like good funk & blues. The album remains T. Rex's most enduring legacy. I’m definitely at that point in #mycdcollection where I was buying a lot of albums out of simple curiosity. Aside from the familiar cover, I knew nothing about this #TRex record beyond “Bang A Gong (Get It On)” and the name #MarcBolan when I fished it out of a $4.99 bargain bin at #TwistAndShoutRecords in Denver back in 2016. I decided to finally give it a shot after so much time gone by, mainly because I kept seeing a lot of posts for it here on Instagram. I dig this record a lot, so it was money well spent. It’s got that classic 70s rock feel, and I hear a lot of influence for Ryan Adam’s music in what’s going on here. My three favorites are “Mambo Sun,” “Jeepster” and “Bang A Gong (Get It On),” but every song is great. Something always told me I’d enjoy this recording. I’m not sure why it took so many years for me to get around to it, but I’m glad I finally did.
