Things to look out for with the upcoming change in weather: CHALK. Itโs just as bad as rust and it WILL layer up and dry on the bar. Once it does it CAN come out but it will take effort. Keep things easy for yourself and be sure to wipe down the bar after your session. Leave the hard work for training. All that barbell cleaning got your brush covered in oily chalk and dirt? Even your brush needs some regular cleaning from time to time. In short, itโs just like hand washing dishes. While we were at it, we installed new shock cords to restore that factory return tension. Today, Iโm thankful for Vulture CrossFit in Bagram, Afghanistan. Looking back Vulture CF is truly where my adult fitness journey began. Up until that time fitness wasnโt really at the forefront of my mind, it was merely a requirement of the Air Force. In mid-Oct 2013 I had just arrived in Afghaniland for the 2nd time in about 16 months. At the encouragement of my wife and Sammie, who just happened to be down the road in Kabul, suggested I give CF a try. So to VCF I went, having almost zero clue what to expect. As you can see in the picture, VCF was a CF box in a tent. I remember little of the first classโฆmaybe ~15 people, an instructor going through weird movements with a pvc pipe and that I sweat a lot. ๐ What I definitely remember though is this, a couple days into it I went to ask one of the coaches, a big burly dude, a question about a specific movement. I told him I just started a couple days prior and before I finish my question he asks, โDude, so how are you feeling?!โ Naturally I was quite surprised when he asked this. Why would he care about how I was feeling? During the ensuing conversation we talked more about my upcoming CF journey, recovery, and some of the mental aspects of what to expect versus lifting techniques or time. It was at that moment I was hooked. A couple days later I was introduced to Fran, I about barfed, and the love-hate relationship grew even more. ๐ Shortly after that first week of classes Iโd be moved to the night shift and wouldnโt attend many formal classes so Iโd have to go at it alone. Over the next 6 months Iโd spend a ton of hours (I was on a Foo Fighters kick for some reason) in that tent and the one next door. My goals were simple, to improve my fitness but also look for some mental respite from the craziness of a war around me. For the most part it helped, except for those few times Iโd have to hit the ground and get to a bunker because of incoming mortars. ๐คช Anyway, I say all that to say this, Iโm thankful for VCF because it set me on a new trajectory in life and without it Barbell Rescue would have never been invented. For that, I am grateful.
