Ever wondered about the complex terminology surrounding the grippy portion of the bar, aka the KNURL? Different knurl types are created based on the type of lifting you do, so naturally the easiest way is to use something that is labelled as a 'hybrid', 'powerlifting' or 'weightlifting' bar. However, the same parameters aren't used across all companies for their products, and it's also important to ascertain if what you see is what you get. The knurl can range from passive (less abrasive, but more slippery) to aggressive (more abrasive, but sticky) feel in your hands. Breaking it down, the scale of passive to aggressive depends on two factors mainly - 1. the shape of the vertical projection of the knurl and 2. the pitch - distance between the projections. 🔑 Shape 🏞 A passive knurl as the name suggests has a flatter profile. You can usually see this on the bar as a flat hill - almost like plateau. ⛰ An aggressive knurl has a sharp profile - often referred to as a mountain knurl. 🌋 A moderately aggressive knurl has a mountain profile, this time with a crater within each peak. This increases surface area as your hands can sink into the crater of each projection without compromising on grip or abrasiveness. All UNRACK bars have a volcano knurl, which is considered gold standard. 💡 You can often identify the shape of the knurl by eye, or by zooming in with a smart phone camera. 🔑 Pitch 1.0mm - A smaller distance between the projections means fewer points on your hands, increasing area of contact, reducing friction. 1.2mm - This is typically used in moderately aggressive knurls - including olympic weightlifting training and competition bars. 1.5mm - Aggressive bars would have larger distance between the projections, and combined with a mountain profile, would give you a highly aggressive grip. At UNRACK we carefully review the best practises in bar knurling and apply that research in developing each of our products so that you have the best experience lifting with our bars.

I noticed the deep dish chrome plates from @mayhem_strength right away as I was walking through the exhibition hall last Thursday night while the vendors were still setting up for @homegymcon. I picked up the demo set, along side the chrome calibrated plates, first thing Friday morning. These plates pay tribute to the design of one of my favorite vintage sets (the Ivanko Chrome Deep Dish OMCs), and have classic cross hubs that recall early Jackson's and Weider's. Vintage flair aside the plates are beautiful enough to stand out even to those that don't know their historical inspirations. James, the owner of Mayhem Strength, is clearly passionate about bringing plates that are truly special to market, and the work and many iterations that went into each design are clearly visible in the end products. B11W2D1: 70th-last session Very much a mixed bag tonight. ••• Comp squat (3-0-0): 1️⃣ Set 2/3- 207.5 x 5 @ RPE 3.5/6 2️⃣ Set 3/3 - 215 x 5 @ RPE 4/7 ~~~ Last warmup at 215kg felt heavier than it should, so I aimed to repeat last week’s weights instead of taking progressions. Barely even quarter squatted my first rep at 225, so I decided to just take what was there (and that ended up being super easy). ••• Comp bench (3-3-0): 3️⃣ Set 1/4 - 135 x 1 @ RPE 6.5/5 (equal PR) 4️⃣ Set 2/4 - 125 x 3 @ RPE 7/8 (equal rep PR) ~~~ Single was definitely a significant overshoot, but still fairly easy. These particular funds will be going to help pay medical bills that member, Josh, has been struggling to keep up with since being diagnosed with kidney disease. Please read his story below 👇 “Hello, my name is Josh, and I have been suffering through a disease called end stage renal failure. This disease, unfortunately, plays a big part in my life, considering I have to base my days around it. I am currently on a treatment called peritoneal dialysis, which allows me to do treatments at home but it also restricts me to 11.5 hours of being tethered to a tube while I sleep at night. Kidney disease also limits how much energy I have on a daily basis. The following describes a normal day for me: I wake up and disconnect myself from the machine. I get ready for work and rush out the door to be there on time. Immediately following work I rush home to change out the bags on my machine with fresh equipment as to be ready for that evening. This can take upwards of 30 mins between emptying and draining the machine to restocking it with fresh solutions. I then run out the door to the gym, where I follow a strict strength regiment to keep me strong for a hopeful transplant and for life in general. Following the gym, I go home to shower and then immediately hook up to my machine and figure out what I’m cooking for dinner just to lay down tethered to my machine to do it all over again the next day. It’s mainly a waiting game for a kidney donation but it also limits my motivation and energy to participate in fun activities with friends. Especially if they are later in the evening. Thank you so very much for supporting this event. It means more than you could ever know.” - Josh
