📚SUNDAY SHELFIE📚 📦moving edition📦 This isn’t the post I planned on doing today. But I was sitting here, taking a break from packing, and I had an urge to post a pic of my boxed up books. Mostly because this isn’t even half of my collection. I’ve been away from #bookstagram while our family moved from Germany to Oklahoma. I did not anticipate that this move would so completely derail me as it did. It’s our fourth overseas move, but definitely the most difficult. We received our furniture about two weeks ago and are trying to find places for all our stuff. I’m happy to report that our furniture arrived relatively unscathed. The same cannot be said, however, for our books. It seems the movers simply threw a number of them in boxes. We unpacked to find a lot of bent pages from books open during transport, ripped dust covers, and even bent books. I’m currently using my son’s heavy books in an attempt to flatten my annotated Pride and Prejudice and a book titled Invasion that were packed under something heavy, like our kettle balls, and are now curved. No, we didn’t keep the kettle balls in the bookcase, or even nearby so I can’t explain this packing method. The packers’ motives are often a mystery and, years later, sometimes result in funny stories. We chuckle now about the time they packed my diaper genie, after I’d told them not to pack anything in the diaper changing area. When we received our household goods three months later, we were very relieved to find that the diaper genie performs as promised. We threw it away immediately not wanting to open what it contained inside! I know I should be relieved that my furniture survived, but I’m a little sad about the state of my books! I was particularly heartbroken with the haphazard way in which they packed my grandfather’s old books. I’m wondering if they were disgruntled by the sheer quantity of books we possessed. I, too, am a little overwhelmed as I try to shelve these books in a smaller space. Once upon a long time ago I received the Burchfield Scholarship, and gave my best high school efforts to help promote the making of the Burchfield Homestead (Salem’s former art teacher - Miss Yereb - had captured our imaginations with her project, as she captivated everyone with the aura that was Miss Yereb. How many lives has she influenced and inspired I wonder…the walls inside miss her.) It is an amazing thing to be back in my hometown, in the garden that inspired naturalist and painter Charles Burchfield (who inspired me), where pollinators and children flitted around on scavenger hunts, in and among other Burchfield fans, scholarship recipients, and pollinator people 🐝🦋🌸.
