Have you ever read Whalefall by Daniel Kraus? • I finished this one last week and it was absolutely fantastic. I went in completely blind aside from a few recommendations and those recs were spot on. • This book was a beautifully emotional gut-punch. I loved every second of it and it broke my heart so many times. A short, fast-paced, and shockingly heartfelt and graphic story that will blow you away and break your heart in two — in the best way. • If you haven’t read Whalefall yet, I highly recommend you do so, yesterday. Boook haaauuulll from @strandbookstore in NYC • 4 floors… books everywhere… a stairwell of author signatures — this place was amazing. • We went down to the bottom floor first and @cat_winedark found that MASSIVE Stephen King encyclopedia for me and that was a must-have. I honestly can’t even begin to describe what is in that book… but the research was meticulously. Very well done, sir, @stephenspignesi. • I love adding wild covers to my Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde collection, and while looking in the horror section, Renfield: Slave of Dracula by Barbara Hambly caught my eye. I love Dracula (as evidenced by my post yesterday), and the Renfield bits specifically, are amazing. • On the top floor, in the autographed/rare section, I came across this signed limited @cemeterydancepub edition of Kealan Patrick Burke’s Jack & Jill. • Lastly, on the walls so the stairwell to the top floor, there were author signatures all over — of course we found @stephengrahamjones’s. • See anything cool here? THE DEAD ZONE by Stephen King (1979) The next book in my King pub order readthrough was supposed to be The Stand, but I've decided to wait until I get to the extended edition from 1990. After that was supposed to be The Long Walk (1978) but I reread it a few months ago so I'm skipping it. It's one my favourites by King and if you haven't read it yet, you definitely should. Which brings us to The Dead Zone! This was my first time reading it and I really enjoyed it! Why is this one not talked about more?! Two of my favourite things that King does are character building and psychic powers. The Dead Zone has both these things so naturally, I loved it. All the characters were written and built up so well, especially Johnny. The plot was great and I didn't really know where things were going for most of the book (in a good way). And it actually had a good ending! King's books can be a miss in that aspect sometimes 😂 If you're a King newbie, I think The Dead Zone would be a great one to start with! It's not really a horror story - more of a psychological thriller. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 I need to watch the movie adaptation of Dead Zone - I've heard it's pretty good. It took me a bit of time to get into The Silent Patient; I really had to force myself to sit down this afternoon, my goal to read at least 100 pages. I ended up reading over 200 pages. Once things do start to happen, the book becomes very hard to put down. I'd been putting off reading it because I'd heard so many mixed reviews, I was pleasantly surprised by it. There were parts that annoyed me; there's a fair amount of spoon feeding from the author, which I feel is mildly insulting to the intelligence of the reader, but that aside, the plot is well thought out, and the ending really took me by surprise. The story is about Alicia Berenson; six years ago, she shot her husband in the head at point blank range five times, and then never spoke again. Theo Faber, a psychotherapist who has been fascinated by her case for years, gets his dream job of trying to help Alicia. He desperately wants to be the one to get her to talk again. Faber is a pretty likeable character, but he does have his flaws; his ego is noticeable from the beginning, and he admits himself that he's messed up due to his childhood, but this makes him all the more real. My fave time of year is here: ‼️‼️‼️POOL READS‼️‼️‼️ Yesterday I held a one person readathon so I could focus on clearing my tbr reads for April and I remain floored at how much I read: I finished both IT (I’ll never recover from this!!!!!) and Black Sun (my first intro to true fantasy and I’m 🤯), both SLAPPERS I’m so excited to move into some new reads for May! I started Annie Bot w/ @ireadshitbooks and I didn’t know what to expect but wishing an AI wife love and happiness wasn’t it. I’m 70 pages in and want Annie to have the world :,) @quirkbooks was kind enough to send over The Z Word: a queer zombie apocalypse title and when @bigbadreads described it as campy and for Chappell Roan fans I moved it to the top of my list expeditiously. Do you like Tea? Or what's your go-to morning beverage? Speaking of Tea... which I love (I also love coffee) I am super excited to read a Tempest of Tea! Look at this gorgeous @owlcrate edition! I especially love the stenciled edges and the foiling on both sides of the hardback! There's also pretty end papers and art on the reverse dust jacket! AND a book ribbon. And it's all nicely color coordinated to the color of tea! Or is that blood colored... 🤔🤔 A Tempest of Tea is said to have vampires, tea, blood, a group of misfits and a heist. AND it's by Hafsah Faizal who wrote the wonderful Sands of Arawiya duology! I am -SO- excited for this one and have been since it was announced a very long time ago. I'm planning to start this one soon! It's our May 1st-8th readalong book over on the Nest which is always a fun way to read! I’m 2/4 stories through Four Past Midnight. This one is four novellas by King in one collection, and it’s one of his bigger bastards so I wanted to do a halfway review. Reviews for this one have seemingly been hit or miss. So far, it’s hitting for me. 1. The Langoliers - A group of passengers on a plane wake up to find that everyone else on the plane, which is still in the air, had disappeared. Including the flight crew. This is a sci-fi horror story which I highly enjoyed. It’s long winded, sure, but that’s my fav kind of King I think. Very character driven. I enjoyed it a lot. 2. Secret Window, Secret Garden. Holy shit, I loved this one. A best selling author is staying in his summer home after his divorce is finalized, when a man shows up claiming the author stole his work. Great psychological thriller and maybe my new fav novella by King. It’ll be hard to top Shawshank, but I think this one came close. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. 🦴 REVIEW 🦴 • Bag of Bones’ plot is intriguing and mind-grabbing. It has some The Shining flavour and I truly appreciated the references to one of my favourite books – Rebecca, by Daphne Du Maurier. In a nutshell, the story revolves around Mike Noonan, a writer (shocking!) who, after the death of his wife, struggles with lingering writer’s block. He then retreats to his lakeside house where a whole set of supernatural events occur and where we meet the antagonist, Max Devore. • I was looking forward to this one. The plot seemed interesting and big books often come with rich character development. Yet, this fell completely flat. Despite my love for lengthy novels, I must say this one is way (way!) too long. It got to the point where I lost interest in the characters, and it all became a snooze fest. In addition, King is well known for creating the best villains, with Randall Flagg, Annie Wilkes, Percy Wetmore, Greg Stillson, and James Rennie being some of my favourites. Max Devore is however more like your typical annoying conservative businessman, instead of a “villain”. • This book left me wondering whether King, like the main protagonist, was struggling with writer’s block during the development of this novel. He is a master in storytelling; however, this one was told in a rather disconnected and autopilot-type way. • I would only recommend it if you, like me, are a King enthusiast and want to read all his works. Have you ever read Whalefall by Daniel Kraus? • I finished this one last week and it was absolutely fantastic. I went in completely blind aside from a few recommendations and those recs were spot on. • This book was a beautifully emotional gut-punch. I loved every second of it and it broke my heart so many times. A short, fast-paced, and shockingly heartfelt and graphic story that will blow you away and break your heart in two — in the best way. • If you haven’t read Whalefall yet, I highly recommend you do so, yesterday. Have you ever read Stephen Graham Jones’ Flushboy? • I finished this odd little tale last week and ya know what… it was good. Nothing spectacular but nothing bad either. • Flushboy is about a teenager working at his father’s drive-through urinal… essentially lol I really don’t know how else to explain it or really what exactly the establishment was lol It was an odd job for sure but the whole book was and it was good because of it. • There’s no real plot here, but the story still flows nicely. Flushboy is a character piece and it’s done really well. SGJ captures that teen voice so well. • The atmosphere in this so good too. SGJ’s writing it top-notch and I can’t wait to keep reading more of his stuff. • Flushboy was a 3.5/5 for me. Nothing amazing but far from bad. Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam, 3⭐️ Synopsis: the internet goes dark while a family is on vacation at an Airbnb and they must decide whether or not to trust the people who show up, claiming to be the owners Honestly? Weird book. Like it wasn’t BAD but I wanted MORE. (Apparently the movie has more.) I don’t super like when books leave me feeling like they weren’t finished and that’s how this kinda made me feel. Like I didn’t really get a sense of who the characters were, I honestly can’t recall their names anymore as I’m writing this review a week about from reading/processing what I read. I understand as a reader I never get to find out what happened because the characters didn’t and it’s a VERY character driven book but I wanted to know something, a little tidbit. I didn’t not like it but I don’t think I’d recommend it.

There were multiple possibilities on who the suspect could have been, and I really didn’t the ending twist. 🤯 I do wish there would have been more on the murder of her sister, but it wasn’t a big issue. I listened to this one on audio and thought the narrator did a fantastic job. I’ll certainly be reading more from this author. Have you ever read Bram Stoker’s classic, Dracula? • I’ve read this icon twice and it is pretty awesome. Finally, finally, FINALLY, I’ve been able to get my hands on @cemeterydancepub’s gift-limited-to-3000-copies edition of Stephen King’s CARRIE. I can’t tell you enough how much I always wanted to have this copy in my collection. The cover itself deserves to be a reason of itself to buy the book, but it’s not the only one.
