***RIP Joan Hills, 1931-2024*** In the Art and Design Library we have made a wee display in honour of Edinburgh-born and educated and internationally renowned artist, Joan Hills, a founding member of the Boyle Family. She passed away on 18th March. Denne uken mottok kunstsenteret den tunge beskjeden om at Joan Hills (1931–2024) hadde gått bort.🕊️ Joan Hills ble født i Edinburgh i 1931. Da faren motsatte seg kunstskole, studerte hun strukturell mekanikk og arkitektur. Hun fullførte ikke, men giftet seg og fikk et barn. Ekteskapet varte ikke. I 1957 møtte hun Mark Boyle (1934–2005). De giftet seg i 1999. Han omtalte henne som sin største inspirasjonskilde. I London på 1960-tallet var de i episenteret for «the counterculture movement». Sammen har de har hatt et nært forhold til Henie Onstad i over 50 år. Allerede på Paris-biennalen i 1967 satt direktør Ole Henrik Moe i juryen som tildelte Mark Boyle en pris. Bekjentskapet førte til mange treffpunkter de kommende årene: Henie Onstad kjøpte flere verk og ble en aktiv arbeidsstasjon for flere av Boyle og Hills' prosjekter. I 1985 ble The Boyle Family Archive etablert på kunstsenteret, bestående av skisser, fotografier, notater og over 40 kunstverk. I 1971 skapte kunstnerparet et lysshow til Soft Machines konsert på Henie Onstad. Mens bandet spilte, projisert paret film og lys på et lerret bak bandet. Både konserten og lysshowet ble legendarisk. Sammen skapte de også psykedeliske lysshow for blant annet Jimi Hendrix. I 1978 stilte Boyle og Hills ut sammen i den britiske paviljongen under Venezia-biennalen. Frem til da hadde de kun stilt ut under Boyles navn, selv om de skapte mye av kunsten sammen. Da barna deres Sebastian (født 1962) og Georgia (født 1963) begynte å hjelpe til med arbeidet, ble de kjent som Boyle Family. De regnes som foregangsfigurer innen skulptur, lyskunst og assemblage i europeisk etterkrigskunst. Senest i 2018 hadde Henie Onstad en utstilling med Boyle Family, som viste arbeider av Boyle, Hills, barna deres og Soft Machine. Også lysshowet fra 1971 ble gjenskapt i Studio. På bildet planter Hills norske frø i et av hennes kjente prosjekter, plantekasseverket Seeds for a Random Garden, som også var en del av den britiske kunstfestivalen British Things ved kunstsenteret i 1972. At an event at the @icalondon in 1968, Joan Hills and her partner Mark Boyle invited guests to throw darts at a 1:10,000,000 scale map of the world. The exact points, determined by chance, became the focus and source material for @boylefamilystudio’s wide-ranging practice spanning decades, acclaimed for hyperrealistic sculptures that look as though were plucked from street corners, beaches, or deserts, among a wide range of other multimedia works. Joan Hills died on March 18. In part-completion of my degree in jewellery and silversmithing (Loughborough College of Art and Design, as was; 1992-1995) I submitted my dissertation; a 10,000 word rambling discourse on the Boyle Family. Their ‘Earthprobes’ series haunted me then, as it does today. Quite literal, monumental re-presentations of the ground beneath our feet somehow alchemised through a rotation of ninety degrees; even into the then-hallowed annals of publication. The downtrodden, horizontal surfaces that grant us so much more than access have drawn my eye for over 30 years. They still do. I love this metal sign that Steve's cousin Doug Rings made for us. The tree is part of the Boyle family crest. Growing up, Steve spent most of childhood moving quite a bit but his Grandma Boyle's house was always a constant place of comfort. (Grandma Rings too) He has so many stories about his childhood at his Grandma Boyle's house and many of them are about the big oak tree in the yard. I love that this represents that for him. Someday, we hope retire to Grandma Boyle's house and we will sit in a swing under the tree. Until then, we have this beautiful tree for our porch. Thank you so much Doug. What a great gift. Four sculptures that are also on show at djcad degree show. Each sculpture is 62cm x 42cm with their own welded steel brackets to support the weight. Using materials like cement, plaster, metal, and wood, I started to replicate walls around Dundee and Edinburgh that I felt were visually attractive. I placed small parts of these walls together as collages in their own wooden frames. Today’s #CollectionPostcard 💌 Words by Lindsey Thompson, MIMA Gallery Assistant Boyle Family 'Demolition Site Study With Broken Red Brick and Rusty Metal', 1990-1991 Mixed media, resin and fibreglass 76 x 106 x 11.5 cm At first glance, this rectangular wall-mounted work resembles the aftermath of a campfire, with charcoal and blackened debris covering the ground. However, a closer look reveals the presence of metal and brick, giving the scene a more sinister feel, reminiscent of a wartime bombsite. From the series 'Earth Studies', 'Demolition Site Study With Broken Red Brick and Rusty Metal' is a landscape laden with evidence of events, human interference and destruction. The umber-coloured ground is dried and crazed, suggestive of a once-saturated muddy land that has become dried out in the sun. Alongside man-made bricks and rusted sheet metal are lumps of charred wood and brick dust. Fragments of sparkling quartz glisten and dried-out leaves bring an organic element to the scene. This is not a purely imagined landscape, but a replication of a specific area. Having selected the location (sometimes by randomly throwing a dart at a map whilst blindfolded), the London-based collective would gather found materials from the site and combine these with resin and fibreglass to create a three-dimensional representation of the landscape. The result is an artwork which evokes a sense of beauty, history and destruction, combining elements which intertwine in a somewhat haunting way. #CollectionPostcards are stories from #theDavidandIndrėRobertsCollection. Good afternoon Art Cats! I have been pottering about looking after my bubble in last weeks cold(brrrrrr!) weather and I was taken aback by the wonderful textures and incidental arrangement of stuff that looked fascinating. Whilst I was doing my looking I started to think about an amazing art ensemble called the Boyle Family. The Boyle Family are a Scottish team of artists that were led by a fella called Mark Boyle who started his practice in 1965. Yet it wasn't until he met and started to work with Joan Hills and later their children Sebastien and Georgia did they truly secure themselves a distinct approach to composition, texture and making the mundane important. They worked in a huge range of media and their reliefs are of things that are so integral to our domestic lives that they are often invisible to us. Like the frosty days we have had that make the often ignored objects and surfaces stand out The Boyle Family did the same, they took the mundane and put it on a gallery wall for all of us to ponder and see things in a different way also... very much like Monsieur R. Mutt did with his latrine! So if you get a chance, Art Cats, stop and give yourself some time to have a good look at your studios and think how your creative space is actually quite special. It’s been a whirlwind few days since we launched our film At Home With the Boyle Family last Sunday 13th November @iklectikartlab . We want to say a massive thank you to all of you, friends old and new and others we didn’t have the privilege of meeting on the day. Thank you for coming together, for generating an electric atmosphere, engaging and supporting our projection of what we feel is a fertile history that is ripe for further investigation. Today is International Animation Day. There are a great many methods for animating images. Mark Boyle (inspired by his partner, artist Joan Hills, to take up art-making) discovered that translucent inks can be animated by the heat emanating from a powerful light bulb. He and Joan experimented with this technique at their home studio with help from their children Georgia and Sebastian for years before they became actively involved in the London Arts Lab and before the psychedelic underground scene converged in 1966 and into the Summer of Love in 1967 when they were invited to become the house light show for the legendary UFO club. Here we see @marikokinoko practicing animating inks using the Boyle method. You can see her perform projections like this along with Bardo Light Show, @chrisdesel and myself @stuart_heaney_films at the launch of our new film about the Boyle Family @iklectikartlab on Sunday 13th November.
