Following the British Middle Championships on Saturday, the Northern Championships took place in Kilnsey South, Upper Wharfedale and was hosted by @claroorienteering. Orienteers navigated the beautiful surroundings to complete the course in a diverse collection of depressions, gullies, and other natural and manmade rock and contour features. The Hill End Outdoor Education Centre is a beautiful and special place that has been a part of childhood for generations of Oxfordshire children who visit for day trips and residentials. Following an application to British Orienteering in 2023 to regain their Recognised Centre Status they have sought to engage more effectively with the orienteering community, who share their passion for getting outdoors for enjoyment, health and wellbeing. Hill End had a number of existing permanent courses, and wanted to use these more effectively to develop the maps and trails days hosted for schools, and to achieve the best learning outcomes. Our Senior athletes were out training in Hungary with Performance Development Manager, Tom Bray this weekend. They were racing in the Spring Spartacus Cup, which is the warmup race for the European Orienteering Championships taking place in August! Reflecting on the event, Tom said: "It's been really good preparation getting the athletes focused on forest ahead of the the biggest Senior Forest races of the year." We can't wait to follow all the action at the event this year which takes place from 15–20 August in Mór, Hungary. What a weekend we have had at @nationaloutdoorexpo We were amazed by how many visitors visited the stand over the two days from families to club runners, uniformed groups, charities, people looking to spice up their walks and everyone in between! Love the OUTDOORS? LEARN to NAVIGATE? Get ACTIVE? This is a 6-week introduction to Orienteering course for adults, hosted by Cleveland Orienteering club. We are offering a walkers group (Couch 2 Green) and a runners group (Track 2 Green) in conjunction with each other. The course aims to take you from little to no orienteering experience to a point where you can complete a ‘green’ (intermediate) standard course. Last week saw the GB Talent Squad get together for a training camp in Gower. Fantastic to see all three squads (North, South and Scotland) training hard together ahead of the new season! There was even time for some down time and a game of pool for the athletes to enjoy. British Night Champs 2024 A great evening in the Lake District last night for the 2024 Championships. Over 300 competitors battling it out in the woodlands beside Derwentwater to be crowned the 2024 Champions. Earlier in the day Border Liners Orienteering Club treated those that had travelled up early to a great warm up event with their Sprint around Keswick. A dry and clear evening meant that if you had chance to take your eyes off the map, the stars were out in full force. ⚠️DATE CHANGE!⚠️ 🧙♀️ SPRING SERIES 3🧙♀️ 📍 CORPORATION PARK, BLACKBURN 🗓 Sun 3rd March ⌚ Event between 12-3pm Due to so many members taking part in the Compass Sport Heat the day after the scheduled date (and giving our volunteers a bit of a break in a busy month) we have a BRAND NEW DATE for the event! Entries will reopen very shortly. A brand new, never before used area, beautifully featured large park and a 2-part Sprint! Don't be put off by the word 'sprint', it is simply a style of orienteering event, meaning a shorter (sprint style), where controls are located closely together - but usually with head-twisting location changing and quick thinking! For this event you get two races for the price of one! You will complete Course A or B first, then after a short break move onto the other course, with your total time being counted at the end! Full details and start times for each course can be found on our website. Orienteering: I bloody love it. I'm also rubbish at it. Really rubbish. I'm often near the bottom of the results table. That's if I actually finish/hit the right controls. But that doesn't stop me from going back time and time again. We're so lucky to have loads of great orienteering clubs in the Lakes so I'm never stuck for events. My favourites are the WCOC Thursday night ones. I get such a laugh from running around like a headless chicken, on a fellside, at night, in winter, with absolutely no idea where I am or what I'm doing! The last Thursday one I did was really hard. I nearly cried. It was on High Rigg, I was the last to arrive and I knew I only had an hour before the course closed. It was only 4.8km - I could walk that, right? Wrong! 4.8km as the crow flies, not 4.8km for somebody who hasn't a clue how to read the intricacies of both an orienteering map and the complex terrain of High Rigg, and whose Strava trace usually looks like the tangle of parasites in Sky's poo after I wormed her for the first time. It took 40 minutes to find 8 out of 22 controls. I had to bail or they would be sending a search party out. It was demoralising, type 2 fun. But then I did another superb night-time event at the weekend, organised by Border Liners. I live near Hackthorpe. I've orienteered there before (in daylight). It's got millions of handrails I can use (hedges, walls, lines of trees, etc) so I can't really get lost. I was slow after a big day of biking the day before, but I didn't make any major mistakes. It's the sort of orienteering that elates me, and reminds me why I love it. There's something so pure about night orienteering, where your senses are limited to the feel of the ground beneath your feet and the bubble of light that illuminates your way. I was recently #gifted a @petzl_official Nao RL and what a revolution it is for this job! Suddenly the small bubble I've become accustomed to has grown exponentially and it's awesome! It doesn't stop me being s*** at orienteering but I guess it's one less excuse... @petzl_running @scarpa_uk @scarpaspa @alpkit @silvaglobal @sportidentuk
