Been doing some solid spring skiing with the friends this year! Rainier has been good to us, skied much better spring snow than what we found mid-winter (which was rain). Last weekend we lucked into great turns for around 4000 ft in perfect weather. By some miracle, I am not sunburned! #Rainier #springski #muir #campmuir #mountrainiernationalpark #bluebirdday

Happy to announce that our 2024 EVENTS ARE LIVE! These events take about three months to come alive and when I finalize each one and input it to the website, I can’t help but feel a little teary eyed. These events distill all the beauty I see in this life: good food, new friends, challenging adventures, and great exploration. I hope that you will join us, or at least recommend us to your friends. I’d also like to introduce Liz Pachaud, @americanweekends , who we are lucky enough to have signed on as our resident guide. Liz might be the most inspiring human I have ever met. Her credentials are enormous, but just to give you a taste, she’s currently taking lessons for her helicopter pilots license TO RESCUE our dumbasses when we get stranded on a snowy mountain! Liz is the best, a fully-certified guide, and will run our Camp Muir treks, all of our Intro to Backpacking courses, and beyond. This party-hardy chef can’t wait for some reasonable structure to float into this lawless enterprise. Please join us. We love these events. We love our community. We love this state. Let us show you why! Links are up in that bio, baby! #washington #seattlefoodie #campmuir #mtrainier #whitesalmon #lummi #poopoopoint #vashonisland #washingtontrails #introtobackpacking #windward #cowboygrill #firefood #grilling #taylorswift #beyonce #seattlelife #seattlewashington

This weekend truly was Paradise! Spent some time making new friends and touring up through paradise to camp Muir on Mt Rainier this weekend. This was the perfect way to enjoy the beauty of this mountain and embrace the empowerment of being a female in these sports. Also getting to splitboard on my first volcano was pretty sick! Im officially at the halfway mark for my @shejumps fundraising climb. If you have the means it would mean the world to me if you could donate and help support this amazing organization that supports women’s outdoor recreation and education. I wouldn’t have made these friendships without them. Link is in bio. #shejumps #womenwhoshred #foundraising #mountaineering #campmuir

07.28.23 | | Muir Snowfield is a large body of snow and ice that sits on the south side of Tahoma (Mount Rainier) in Washington State. The ice body is named after the late 19th century naturalist John Muir. Resting between the Nisqually and Cowlitz glaciers, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Mount Rainier National Park. Despite this feature being called a “snowfield”, it is actually a glacier. The iconic blue glacial ice is found in the snowfield at elevations above 8400’, and deep crevasses scar the surface. One of the reason this glacier is such an icon of the park is due the relatively high foot traffic it sees every season. This glacier is traversed by thousands of climbers every year as they start their multi-day trek to the summit of Tahoma. At the top of the glacier, resting on a rocky outcrop called Cowlitz Clever, is Camp Muir. Camp Muir serves as the halfway point for the majority of climbers who attempt a summit. Most climbers will spend the night at Camp Muir after starting their hike at the Paradise visitor center. From there, they will usually wake up around midnight the next day and begin their final, 4400’ push to the summit of this magnificent stratovolcano! I took this photo on McClure Rock, a rock outcrop just below Muir Snowfield near the 7400’ mark. If you look closely you can several dozen climbers, spread out across the glacier, making their way to Camp Muir. From where I was, the climbers still had 2 miles and 2700’ of elevation until they reached Camp Muir. A grueling hike when the odds of a successful summit is 45%. #tahoma #mountrainiernationalpark #washington #campmuir #mountrainier

My next favorite trail of 2024 is the Skyline Trail in Mt. Rainier National Park! This trail is long and rated as hard but is so worth it!! This trail is also the trail used for those aimimg to summit Mt. Rainier! We saw many prospective summit hopefuls on the trail the day we went! The day started out cold, drizzling, and super foggy, but by the time we got to Panorama Point, the fog started lifting! As we continued along the glaciers of Mt. Rainier on the upper Skyline Trail, we got to view and hear several avalanches and started to see glimpses of the summit of Mt. Rainier! Near the end of the trail, we finally got to see the full summit of Mt. Rainier! It is a beautiful mountain and just stunning to get to hike on! This mountain is also home to many different types of vegetation and wildlife! We saw mountain goats, marmots, and a bear near the Paradise visitor center! This is an incredible trail and not only one of my favorites of 2023 but also of all time! #mtrainiernationalpark #mtrainier #washington #skylinetrail #upperskylinetrail #campmuir #nationalpark #nps #nationalparkgeek #nationalparktrips #hikinglove #hikingtrips #hiking #hikingaddict #volcano #activevolcano #wildlife #mountaingoats #marmots #wildflowers #bears #beautifuldestinations #amazingplaces #leavenotrace #packinpackout #wowworthy #travel #adventureisoutthere

#HistoricMountRainier The stone Guide Shelter at Camp Muir was designed by a member of The Mountaineers, Carl F. Gould, and constructed in 1916. It is part of the Mount Rainier Historic Landmark District both for its association with early recreational development of the park but also for its distinctive stone masonry design. The stone was harvested from nearby slopes, creating a camouflage effect, and the flat roofs kept the building profiles low to better withstand the high winds of the upper mountain. The building was restored in 2005. Today it serves as a ranger station. Have you made the climb to Camp Muir and visited the historic Guide Shelter? Overnight trip to Camp Muir. This was my first time sleeping there. It was a very unique experience, I really enjoyed it. We almost couldn’t get in the shelter. No one’s been there for a while and the door was completely encased in ice, frozen shut. After a lengthy team effort we got in! We would of had a long dark hike back to camp in the parking lot, not to mention it was freezing out. The gate at Longmire is locked from 5-9. #winterhiking #campmuir #paradisemtrainier #goldenhour #sunset #mountains #washingtonmountains #pnw

Took a lot out of me to plan and execute this solo trip spanning 1500 miles of driving in one week in Washington and Oregon, first time mountaineering in glacial conditions at #mtrainier, seeing #hohrainforest, spending time at the pacific coast line beaches like #rialtobeach, #canonbeach, hiking up on #mthood, and finally ending the trip with meeting up with the good ol’ Luv Mahajan and his wife (missed the birth of their son by a thread), it was just surreal!!! #solotrip #solohike #oregon #oregoncoast #campmuir

August 12-13 - Camp Muir The plan was to go for another summit attempt of Rainier, but we found out from some climbers at camp that the route was basically done for. We decided to bail, "sleep in" and enjoy the sunrise from camp. While I did not quite get all of the hikes checked off my list this summer. I did get to spend some quality time with friends up on the Muir snow field. It was my 7th trip up to camp Muir, but the first time for a few members of my group. As winter gets close the snow field starts to get the snow it greatly needs.

Trip Report: Camp Muir Camp Muir is the base camp for those climbing Mt Rainier on the Paradise side of the mountain. Sitting at 10,060 ft with about 4,600 ft of elevation gain over 4 miles, this is a perfect training hike. I try to do this annually. The hike up is technically on a snowfield, but has many properties of a glacier. This late in the season, there are crevasses, so you must be careful to watch your step. While more elite/better trained athletes can ascend in trail runners, I have always required my micro-spikes, I don't like slipping around. My favorite part of this hike is the views of Mt Adams, Mt St Helens, Mt Hood, and on a very clear day, Mt Jefferson. On the way down, there are opportunities for gliassading. Be sure to take off any crampons or mircospikes if you decide to glissade. It is very important to make sure you wear sunscreen and some head and face protection on this hike, as the reflection of the sun on the snow can burn you very quickly. I try to do this one every year. It is a favorite and the views and workout never disappoint. #campmuir #optoutside #mountainviews #pnwonderland #mountaineering #trailreview #Trailblazer #mtrainier

Camp Muir Approach Made More Difficult by Glacier Ice The approach to Camp Muir from Paradise traverses the “Muir Snowfield”, a field of perennial ice and seasonal snow. Its lowest extent is around 7400 feet elevation above Pebble Creek and at the very top is Camp Muir at 10,000 feet. The Muir Snowfield exhibits many of the qualities of a glacier. There is glacier ice and small, but deep, crevasses. Each year in May, we measure about six meters (roughly 20 feet) of winter snow accumulation at 9,600 feet on the snowfield. You might be surprised to know that this winter snow melts off completely some years. This exposes older layers of snow below, which can also be melted away by the warm late-summer weather, in turn exposing old glacier ice. When this happens, as it has this year, the route to Camp Muir requires travel on very firm glacier ice and passage around open crevasses. - If you slip and fall on this kind of glacier ice surface, it is difficult to stop and you can accelerate uncontrollably down the hill. Ice axes, sticks, trekking poles don’t help much trying to stop. There’s nothing for them to grab into! - The surface of the ice is pocked with many air bubbles creating a cheese-grater type of surface that can really leave its mark on your exposed (and clothed) flesh! - If you start to slide and can’t stop, you may fall into a crevasse. Over the years, it isn’t uncommon for hikers to find themselves with a twisted ankle or worse 10-15 feet down in a vertical-sided icebox. Sound doesn’t travel well from inside a crevasse. Calling for help may not work. Aside from all the other normal issues ranging from fitness, to altitude, to weather, now you need some moderate technical skills & experience with crampons or some kind of augmented traction devices for your feet. It’s “no-fall” terrain (see the part above about cheese-grater ice) even if you do stay out of crevasses. So if you’re new to this type of terrain or have little experience in this type of environment, we recommend patience and sitting the rest of the summer out. NPS Photos of Muir Snowfield conditions 8/9/23. ~sl/kl #mountrainer #mountrainiernps #muirsnowfield #CampMuir

📍Camp Muir or “cloud camp” is located above the Muir snowfields and the highest accessible point on Mount Rainier prior to roping up and having permits. The snowfields are steep, but will give you front row views of Rainier’s glaciers 🥹😍 take caution because crevasses may appear during summer. PNW challenger John didn't stop at Camp Muir... he summited Mount Rainier for his 9th peak in the PNW challenge. John writes: "So I had actually done Camp Muir a few times in the last year already, and it took some holding back to not just do a post for it earlier, but I wanted to go big and include it with a summit, lol. Spent the night at Camp Muir (well, got 3 hours of sleep) and then started the hike to the summit at 12:30. We were the last to start, but first to summit!" Join the challenge! The summit of Mount Rainier is not part of the PNW Six-Pack of Peaks Challenge -- just Camp Muir. But one challenger had other plans. A few more pictures... July 28-30, 2023. Mt Rainier via the Disappointment Cleaver route. We’d been planning this trip for months, and last weekend the weather conditions looked promising for a summit attempt. We left home at 1:30AM Friday, crossing the border and arriving early at the Paradise Information Center to ensure we were able to get a climbing pass. Leaving the trailhead at 8AM, the hike up to a very crowded Camp Muir at 10,188 ft took about four hours. We set up camp, and then tried to catch a few hours sleep. We got up at 11PM, roped up, and were on the trail by midnight. Because the Disappointment Cleaver route is popular with commercially guided groups, the trail was marked and there was a well-established boot pack. The four crevasse crossings had ladders and fixed handlines in place. While not particularly technical as glacier climbs go, the 40% less available oxygen (compared to sea level), made for a tough climb. The eventual sunrise revealed we were above the clouds and surrounded by the stunning Ingraham Glacier. Due to a large crevasse opening up the week before, we had to detour around it which added several hundred meters of elevation gain. We made it to the summit at 14,410 ft by 7AM, but the vicious winds precluded anything more than a quick stay on the summit crater. We were back to Camp Muir by 1PM then straight to bed. Up at 5AM the next morning for the hike back to the car and the drive home. It’s been awhile since I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone… since before kids. When I booked Rainier I knew it’d be a stretch to summit but I was looking for motivation. Well, I found it!Rainier’s unapologetic conditions has been a reminder it’s going to take more than a fancy guide and a few hikes to make it to the top. 🏔️Mount Rainier is 14,417’ tall, and is the fifth highest peak in the contiguous US, (Mt. Whitney is 14,494’). It’s final camp before the summit is Camp Muir, at 10,000’, and is found above the steep Muir Snowfields. Rainier has 29 glaciers around its entire perimeter, and is famous for making its own weather due to its insane prominence and mass. The popular saying, “the mountain is out!” Is used when Rainier comes out of the clouds, and my hike to Camp Muir was entirely in clouds until I reached its elevation. Having snow below me, and clouds above me with little visibility and few visual landmarks (no cairns), very few other hikers, thin air, and difficult to see footprints was pretty tricky, but so rewarding on such a special mountain. . . . . #mountrainier #mtrainier #mountrainiernationalpark #campmuir #snowfield #glaciers #snow #tahoma #explorewashington #explorewashingtonstate #visitwashington #cascades

All in all, an epic weekend and a successful summit on our first attempt! #campmuir #cascaderange #cascades #columbiacrest #crampons #crevasse #disappointmentcleaver #glacier #ice #ingrahamglacier #mountain #mountaineering #mountainlife #mountains #mountrainier #mountrainiernationalpark #mtrainier #myhappyplace #nature #outdoorlife #outdoors #paradise #paradisewashington #peakbagging #rainier #skylinetrail #snowfields #sonyrx100 #stratovolcano #summit
