So it’s here!!! Garage sale starts tomorrow! We’ve cleaned out both attics, the crawl space and many closets and here is the plunder! At least- someone else’s plunder! Do you know why I love the fact that Laura Alary described Song of the Seasons as a hymn of praise? My mum died far too young, after giving birth to and raising eight children. One of her favorite hymns was 'Yes, God is Good,' written in the 1800s by John Hampden Gurney. This hymn of praise begins: Yes, God is good: in earth and sky, From ocean's depth to spreading wood, Ten thousand voices seem to cry, God made us all and God is good. When I was writing Song of the Seasons, a lyrical celebration of Psalm 98, I couldn't stop thinking about these wonderful words, ones that I often sing when I'm out walking. I hope that John Hampden Gurney wouldn't mind that I echoed some of them in the summer and fall pages of the book. (Swipe to see.) An appropriate painting for Holy Week… painted by my dad.
Recently, I've been losing my confidence for school visits. I have always loved reading to children and interacting with little ones, but lately, I've found myself wondering if I'm just too old to do it anymore. I have lost count of the number of times when kids, especially kindergarteners (who are totally honest, and I usually love them for that) ask, "How OLD are you?" I usually laugh it off. I reply with something like, "I'm very old aren't I? I'm a grandma! But it just shows that you're never too old, OR too young, to do what God calls you to do." But when that happens, I'm not laughing inside.It makes me feel under confident and 'less than.' It's not a good feeling. I told my husband,." I think I'm done with school visits." But that was before I got this message from the school librarian, before I read Song of the Seasons to some lovely second graders at Dutton Christian Elementary, before I'd asked them to wonder about what it would sound like if the mountains, or the trees, or the oceans sang, before an intuitive teacher waived her math lesson in favor of allowing her class to follow their inspiration to write. Sometimes, God steps in with just the right message at just the right time. I guess I'm not done with school visits yet. And I'm so thankful. God is, indeed, 'grate.' 😍 Has anyone out there ever felt the same way as me?

“Cookery becomes an art rather than mere drudgery in the hands of the interested housekeeper.” 🥚Fannie Farmer loved to cook, but in the late 1800’s many of the recipes were vague and confusing. The “Daddy Bus”! Who else grew up with one of these as their family car??? We LOVED our Daddy Bus- and dad loved it too. It had a top that opened up- almost the entire length of the bus. This car got us faithfully to Florida to visit grandparents many times . To Texas to visit relatives and many more places. With six kids between us, weve had our fair share of juice spills, scribbles on walls, jumping off sofas, going on top of tables and so much more. Kids get themselves in messes all the time and it’s our job as their parents to guide them through life. “Mommy, Do You Love Me?” encourages children to express their emotions and communicate their big feelings. As moms, we have all experienced moments when our children spill juice, break cups, or draw on walls. These situations can be frustrating, and our emotions may show on our faces, despite how hard we try not to let them show. This book teaches children that no matter what mistakes they make, no matter how many tantrums they throw, no matter their behaviour, their mother’s love is unconditional. It beautifully illustrates important lessons about love, forgiveness, and the strength of family bonds. If you have kids, you know that they are constantly doing something they shouldn’t be doing. Whether that’s scribbling on walls, jumping off sofas, purposefully spilling their juice, climbing on top of tables and so on. To them, they are just playing and having fun and they don’t understand why they shouldn’t be doing it. As moms, we always have to remember that we are our children’s guide through life. There will always be good days and bad days where your frustration shows. When this happens, it’s important to affirm over and over that your love is unconditional. This book does all that by encouraging open and honest communication. My husband retired, travels, Michigan plans, seeing lots of friends and relatives - especially the ones who live far away.
