“You’re putting the straw in the minivan?” The farm and feed guy looks incredulous. “Yep. Right on top of the bins of compost and dirt.” I lift the hatch and he smiles. Spring is a time of transformation. The seats come out of the minivan and her DIY marmoleum floor is put the test with several large totes of dirt that are shuttled across town to our garden in preparation for seeding. Transformation is a messy time. I hang my “dirt pants” up and skip washing between wears for a month. Getting smart about what work is necessary helps me enjoy the dirty work more altogether. This is important in my inner work, too. I imagine a long list of thoughts and actions that are unhelpful and take energy. Doom scrolling, worrying about things I have no ability to change, rehashing the past from a victim perspective … I have choice about whether to do these. And choice comes with awareness... Das muss ich inzwischen revidieren, denn in Wahrheit bin ich gar nicht allein - das sind wir alle nicht. Und das waren wir auch noch nie. Was immer wir erschaffen wollen (seien es Bücher, Songs, Kunst, ein eigenes Business), wir haben zuverlässig jemanden an unserer Seite. Es ist unsere Muse ✨ - jenes geheimnisvolle Wesen, das all die Ideen, die sich in uns hineinschleichen und sämtliche Impulse, die in uns aufploppen, umsetzen und in die materielle Welt manifestieren möchte. Leider lassen wir uns oft ablenken, wir prokrastinieren, zerstreuen unseren Fokus, vergleichen uns mit anderen oder ergeben uns in elende Selbstzweifel. Aber all diese Dinge verprellen die Muse und hemmen komplett ihre Kreativität. Dabei möchte sie so gern für uns da sein und die wundervollsten Dinge mit uns gemeinsam erschaffen, die wir der Welt als Geschenk hinterlassen können. Und wie bringt man die Muse dazu, ihre Bestimmung zu tun? @caros.writing.journey , die mich zu diesem Post inspiriert hat, fragte mich in einer erheiternden Konversation, die wir kürzlich hatten, ob man der Muse einfach etwas zu essen oder eine Fußmassage anbieten sollte... 😉 Nun, man kann ihr vieles anbieten und sie wird es vielleicht auch annehmen. The sweetest time being blessed and blessing the land with the act of creation. I continue to believe the greatest gift we can give to the earth is acknowledgement and gratitude for all she gives us. This weekend we gathered to slow down and interact with this river bank in a most intimate way. Going back to the practices of our ancestors by making paints from stones and using the natural world as our canvas. A deep nervous system reset and a deeper remembering of where we come from and how this land that holds us holds millions of years of natural creative intelligence… always there for us to tap into. I’ve had a dream for years. Since I stepped foot in Scotland for the first time in 2012, I knew I wanted to live here, if only for a short period of time. This land feels like home, with a warmth, sturdiness and a lack of urgency, it calls me back time and again. It’s always here. Being here feels timeless in a way. It came as no surprise to me last year when my ancestry results showed I’m 48% Scottish. My body knew before my mind did. To honour my connection to this land, to my body’s knowing, and to my connection to ancestors, I’ve come here for 3 months. I’m continuing to see clients for the first month I’m here. And then for 2 months, I’m taking a sabbatical to start writing my first book! I’m doing a deep dive into some of my favourite topics: connection to the earth, an internal sense of home, ancestral psychology, community and rootedness, being at home on the land and a living land with a beating heart. Happy Earth Day! I did get to work on my garden a little this weekend. Reusing milk jugs as little seed-starting greenhouses worked really well for me last year, so I’m doing that again. Last year I started these Jigsaw peppers too late and didn’t get any. Hopefully we’ll get a good crop this year. The Tokiwa cucumbers were a favorite last year—super crisp! I planted an avocado started from a seed by my mother-in-law, and I harvested some of my monstrous rhubarb (also from my MIL). Last week I attended a Speakers Intensive Workshop with the Elite VIP Speakers Group in NYC with my mom @sharlalee5 and it was a smashing success. This group is led by @thekimwalshphillips and @justinguarini (American Idol Season 1 Alumni and Broadway performer), both phenomenal business coaches with powerfulprofessionals.com. I was blessed with being mom’s “wingwoman”— it was such an honor to watch her in action. The result? We both signed on as Keynote Speakers and are scheduled to perform on stage in NYC in October, a week before Sharla Shults’s TEDx speech in Montana.
