When one of your besties is taken overnight for emergency, colic surgery, and you are so worried you can’t stop looking for him! Colic is always a scary thing with horses so while the surgery went well, we are still waiting to ensure there are no complications. It is really hard to see one of your horses in pain, and not knowing if they’re going be okay. It can be VERY frustrating watching your other half fast asleep, with seemingly not a care in the world and somehow able to not hear your baby screaming at the top of their lungs (or your baby turn slightly in their sleep next door as you do) Wouldn’t it be nice to sleep like that?! This 6m old came back to see me since doing his newborn pictures & he did so good! Although he is happy now his parents said he had colic & boy did that take me back! I want to talk about colic for all those needing to hear- it's okay!! I remember not wanting to leave the hospital because all my baby did was cry. I remember asking the nurse if she thought it was colic. No way were they going to answer that question to a first time mom, I was told my baby was just a "little fussy" & it was normal. It was not normal to me! I thought this wasn't fair, why is our baby crying all the time. I felt as though I was robbed of my maternity leave as the colic stopped close to when I had to go back to work. Although it feels like you will never sleep again ( I promise you will). A few tips I learned when I was going through this was crank up that white noise as loud as you can. It really helps. We used to fall asleep to an old TV on static. As soon as I would turn it off....more crying. Lots of bouncing & holding your baby (I was also told I held my baby too much- that's what worked for me & I don't think you can hold your baby too much). I also did a lot of bouncing my baby (a very fast squat up & down) & swaying from side to side. The motion helped ALOT! Don’t forget about swaddling. I am not a Dr. or have any degree in the medical field- this is just what worked for me. @sleepysweet_pea is launching a new sleep course for parents! I know lots of babies I work with struggle with sleep. In the past I saw 2 sleep consultants to help me, help my son to sleep better. Sadly the first one was not of great help. I felt the advice was very generic and, although the sleep plan looked great and made sense in theory, it was just impossible for us to achieve. My son still had reflux and that needed to be addressed first. I know @sleepysweet_pea recognises this, which is why we are now working together to help parents. Once your baby’s reflux has been addressed, they can be happy and comfortable in their own body and hopefully longer periods of restful sleep can begin! For babies still struggling with sleep, a sleep consultant can be a huge benefit though. We had a very scary colic scare. The vet could feel the impaction and it was very large. She coliced for 4 days. And started to get better on the 5th. Her liver started to get angry and the vet will be back out to pull labs in couple days to make sure it is ok. Mary is a chronic colicer for the last year. We have tried everything we can think of to stop it.
