It may be Halloween 🎃 but in all honesty there's nothing more scary than stepping outside your comfort zone. This is exactly what we are doing planning the Preloved clothing event. Yes we love fashion and know how to throw an outfit together but have we ever organised such an event 😳 We are working flat out on this and every other project that we're involved with (community garden, peace garden, newsletters, garden design, markets etc etc) and while it's scary and a massive learning curve we've both never been so happy. This may be an odd post for a couple of horticulturists, well in our eyes it's all our responsibility to make changes. We are holding a Preloved clothing sale at the Keyworth village hall on the 23rd November to raise money for our community garden and to help raise awareness of the damage fast fashion has on our planet. Looking around many gardens at the moment and you'll see an array of beautiful flowers, this one is the giant scabious otherwise known as Cephalaria gigantea. To keep many of your annual and perennials flowering as long as possible you'll need to keep deadheading. On something like the scabious you'll need to cut right at the bottom of the stem to encourage new flower spikes to form. It can be really annoying when you're craving for a damp boggy garden and you have a dry shady border. Well have no fear! 😬 Creating an area to grow your favourite pond side plants couldn't be easier. First ensure you have the correct spot, many moisture loving plants prefer a semi-shade position ⛅ Dig your trench, hole or area then line that with plastic, you could reuse those non-recyclable compost bags. Puncture a few holes with a garden fork and fill back in with a soil and compost mix. Hesperis matronalis otherwise known as sweet rocket or dame's violet is in full swing at the moment. It comes in this beautiful lilac, pinky colour or pure white. Easy to grow from seed it's classed as a short lived perennial or biennial. It provides a glorious splash of colour in any herbaceous border. Did you know that the colour purple both calms and stimulates our bodies, helping us to focus. It's meant to foster creativity by awakening our senses. It's time to check in on our little ones, yes I mean the worms in the wormery. They've been nicely tucked up for winter with some extra food in a frost free place otherwise they're no bother. We've just given them some lovely cabbage leaves to nibble through and they've paid us back with some liquid plant food (okay it's worm wee) 🤢 do yourself a favour and don't sniff it, ever!! Seriously the best fertilizer.
