Hi... Mojave Desert. March 2024. I am at the Afton Canyon Campground. From the campground I hiked east along the Mojave Road through the canyon. I went about 12 miles round trip and explored a number of side canyons some of which were quite narrow, long, and rugged. I had a blast on this hike. Every slot canyon is different. They all have their own geology and challenges. A great way to spend a day. Make sure to explore the side canyons as much as you can. This slot canyon is almost completely enclosed and you feel like you are in a cave. There are also several areas where there are ropes to assist in climbing up various obstacles. Slot canyons are always fun but this added a whole new level to the experience. I had a blast on this hike. Every slot canyon is different. They all have their own geology and challenges. Hi... Next up was the Mojave Desert. March 2024 I am at the Afton Canyon Campground. What a pleasant surprise, I had only planned on a night or two here but it turned into 5 nights. The dirt road to the CG was fairly easy. I think most vehicles should be able to get there. The sites are large and I was there for 5 nights and the CG never filled up. One night there was only 3 people here. There is a train that runs along the Mojave Road and hence through the CG. I like trains so I thought it was cool. Only a few trains went by a day. Very rarely at night. There is a ton of hiking available right from the CG. There is no water there and I was glad I had my emergency roll of toilet paper as it ran out. Definitely worth checking out. The CG is along the Mojave River and that follows a canyon many miles long with many a side canyon to check out. As well as some historical items along the way. Hiking South of the CG is what I think was aptly named South Wash. I followed this up and checked out several side branches. I was able to hike all the way to the top and get out along the tall narrow ridges that separate the washes and eventually made it out to the flat open land south of the wash. 1/2 Have you ever been inside a wash? This was a first for me! A desert wash is an area where water once flowed or still flows during rain events. Washes are quite easy to distinguish as they are low lying, with sparse or no vegetation, and fairly flat. They can be very wide and carry on for many kilometres - hence they resemble huge dry rivers. In Anza Borrego we visited some wind caves which were very cool, but then we found out that there were other, even more impressive wind caves on the other side of the park! The problem was that the only way to reach them would be by driving about 5 km through Fish Creek Wash. The only way to comfortably drive through a wash is with a 4x4 because of the uneven terrain and boulders. We did not rent a 4x4 (in hindsight a bad decision), so we thought we would walk the 5 km to reach the wind cave trail. After walking for a bit in 30C heat, we decided to return to the car and try to drive as far as we could. It would hopefully be less tiring than walking all the way to the trail, climbing the trail, and then having to walk back. Incredibly, our trusty VW Touareg made it almost all the way to the trail. We had to leave it on the side of the wash only 1 km before the trail because the boulders got a little too intense and the car's clearance wasn't high enough. Photos show some of the dramatic views inside the wash. It was really quite an experience. The little white van is a 4x4 - I took a photo of it for scale. The other car photos are of our own vehicle. The video is near the end of the wash (and right by the trail). I was traveling through Marble Canyon in northern Arizona for the first time, and came upon a trailhead for the Cathedral Wash Trail along Lees Ferry Road. The trail looked interesting so I decided to do the 3.3 mile round trip route through the wash down to the Colorado River. I’m glad I did this hike. After the Painted Desert we had a fairly ill-advised and uncomfortable night camped in a red rock canyon at 7,700 feet of elevation outside of Gallup New Mexico. We ended up there only because our original plan was even worse - a super remote cabin up Wildhorse Wash accessible only by high-clearance 4x4. The cabin seemed like a good idea at the time we booked it, but by the time we arrived, I was still struggling mightily from a nasty covid rebound. After going half way up the wash, I was pretty sure the van had the capability to make it, but I was feeling so poorly that there was no margin for error even if we only got only slightly stuck - I did not have the strength to do a self-recovery with shovels and traction boards in 100 degree desert heat. Even at the red rock canyon campground I ended up sitting up most of the night trying to take in enough air to stay oxygenated. Kinda scary. We bailed before dawn and hatched a plan we labeled with the working title “Escape from the Colorado Plateau.” Turns out that is easier said than done, given how large this elevated plateau region really is, but our plan had us head north to pass through Four Corners (a kitschy, kind of depressing spot) and catch the Great Sand Dunes National Park in gorgeous late afternoon light. From there it was a mad dash to get far enough east in Colorado to find a place to sleep at lower elevation. Took a fair amount of travel to pull it off. People tend to think of Colorado as Rocky Mountains, but the entire eastern half is high desert and you have to go almost to the Kansas border to get down below 5,000 feet. Kansas is somewhat the opposite - you think of it as completely flat, but, in fact, it rises very steadily and linearly from about 1,000 feet of elevation on its eastern border to 2,000 feet in central Kansas to 3,000 feet in western Kansas, to almost 4,000 feet where it meets the gentle slope of eastern Colorado. The leaves of Pholisma arenarium have adapted to the hot, sandy deserts they reside in. These short, scaly spines completely juxtapose the beautiful purple flowers of this plant. The leaves are even devoid of chlorophyll. So, this herb grows on other plants and loots nutrients from their roots. Fantastic tour of @eastrustonoldvicarage gardens today with the inimitable Alan Gray. It was fascinating to hear about the evolution of the gardens from literally nothing but a bare field. There are so many different styles of garden and gorgeous corners within East Ruston's 32 acres, one visit can't do them all justice. On this occasion my favourites were the Exotic Garden with its two pools and beautiful water fountain, and the Desert Wash, which is designed to resemble parts of Arizona where drought is punctuated by very heavy rainfall and flooding once or twice a year. March Best Pt.2 1. Henry watching over the yard. Having 100 lb. puppy running around has been fun and, at times a little hairy. It's what I imagine being a matador with a bull running full out towards you feels like. If you side step, do you go left or right. Do or can you manage a full frontal assault? It's nothing malicious, just Henry with a lot of puppy energy. So far, so good - we've managed to side step each other, like a dance. 2. It's probably no coincidence that these petroglyphs can clearly be seen during spring when there's a high chance of water flowing in the desert. The desert light is tricky, it can hide or expose depending on the season and time of day. The first time seeing these drawings, though we must have passed by them a million times. 3. Said water flowing down the wash. Probably snow runoff from nearby mountains. 4.
