Mallows and dragons: A couple of favourites quietly doing their thing, at Broughton Hall, and next door Callan Park' Kirkbride Block. Hibiscus mutabilis, Malvaceae from China opens white and mutates to rose pink. There are single and double ('Plena') forms. I don't recall its flowers being as large as these (over 10cm diameter) so perhaps this is a hybrid with another species? Dragon or dragon's blood trees (Dracaena draco, Agavaceae, Canary Islands) are a marvellously wierd Dr Seuss storybook kind of tree, slow, triangular & elephantine in grey-green, sandy textured 'skin' like leaf. Sap and leaf scars are bright orange / cinnabar-blood red. The resin is much used medinically & to stain violins, glues & more. A line of specimen dragons is outside the Kirkbride Block, the main entry of Callan Park Hospital. It sadly lost one and toppled another old, big one, lately. No doubt confused by drought & 3 wet La Niña years. They're fleshy rooted, so fragile: pushing it upright and staking might be even more of a shock, and kill the tree. Just as well I grew 6 or so babies from fruit off its mate along the way. Echter Eibisch (Althaea officinalis) Malvengewächse (Malvaceae) Eibisch (Althaea) Probiert unsere kostenlose Pflanzen Vokabel-Lernapp "Dein Artenwissen" aus :) Der echte Eibisch, ist eine mehrjährige Pflanze, die eine Wuchshöhe von bis zu 150 Zentimetern erreichen kann. Der Stängel ist aufrecht, behaart und verzweigt sich oft. Die Blätter sind groß und herzförmig und können eine Länge von bis zu 20 cm erreichen. Die Blüten des Eibischs sind groß und trichterförmig mit fünf Kronblättern und erscheinen von Juni bis August in den Farben weiß, rosa oder lila. Die Pflanze hat eine lange Blütezeit und kann bis zu 30 Jahre alt werden. Der echte Eibisch wächst bevorzugt auf feuchten Böden und ist in Europa und Asien heimisch. In der Pflanzenheilkunde werden die Wurzeln und Blätter des Eibischs zur Herstellung von Tee und anderen Präparaten verwendet. Sie sollen bei Reizhusten, Entzündungen der Atemwege und des Verdauungssystems, Magen-Darm-Beschwerden und Hautirritationen helfen. Außerdem wird der Eibisch in der Kosmetikindustrie eingesetzt, da er feuchtigkeitsspendend und hautberuhigend wirkt. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass der Eibisch in hohen Dosen unerwünschte Wirkungen haben kann, insbesondere aufgrund des hohen Gehalts an Schleimstoffen, die die Aufnahme von Medikamenten beeinträchtigen können. Die Blätter und Wurzeln des Echten Eibisch sind essbar und können roh oder gekocht verzehrt werden. Die ideale Erntezeit ist im Frühling und Sommer. Junges Laub und zarte Wurzeln sind vorzuziehen, da ältere Teile möglicherweise faserig werden. Andere Teile der Pflanze, wie Stängel, sollten begrenzt verzehrt werden. Der Genuss in moderaten Mengen ist sicher, wobei eine übermäßige Einnahme abführende Effekte haben kann. They say the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, and that goes for wildflowers too. We ooh and aah over unfamiliar species in far-flung places, and overlook the familiar beauties growing in our own backyard. Whenever we travel to the desert, we’re transported by the orange globemallows we find there. But really our own local mallow is just as lovely. Native to the west coast of the US, checkerbloom is a common denizen of dry, open flats. Although it always sports bright green palmate leaves and pink flowers arranged on a spike, this plant is extremely variable in appearance. It can grow anywhere up to 24 inches high, and can range in color from the palest of pinks to a deep, vibrant hue. This variety is not completely random; there are at least ten recognized subspecies, and some of them are rare and endemic. Brachychiton bidwillii. Little Kurrajong is native to tropical forests of eastern Queensland, Australia. A deciduous shrub or small tree, it loses its leaves before the brilliant red flowers bloom in April. They emerge from the branches and trunks, and not from new shoots. Botanists called this cauliflory, a phenomenon rare in temperate regions but common in tropical forests. Little Kurrajong is easily grown from seed, and because the seedlings begin forming tuberous roots even as the first leaves emerge, it is drought resilient from a young age. It tolerates moderate freezes, making it an excellent choice for Marrakech gardens. Many of the more than thirty species of Brachychiton are called Kurrajong, derived from an Aboriginal name. Fiber from their bark is used to make baskets, fishing nets and ropes. Brachychiton bidwillii is called Little Kurrajong because of its diminutive stature compared to other trees in the genus, such as the Queensland Bottle Tree (Brachychiton rupestris), which can reach over 20 meters in height. “Jazz is a fighter. 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝟰𝟵: This strikingly vibrant ✨️beetle species posed a significant challenge for taxonomists (literally for 225 years) as they sought to classify the distinctly different morphological life stages of the hibiscus harlequin beetle (HHB). I, too, embarked on a journey as I documented the existence of a solitary little green beetle🪲 tracing back its origins, only to discover a true infestation on nearby trees. Hibiscus harlequin beetles are true bugs (𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘴 𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘮𝘶𝘴) native to eastern Australia. They feed and breed on many species of the Malvaceae plant family. Family: Scutelleridae (metallic jewel bugs ) Plant family: Malvaceae (hibiscus family) . 𝗔) Adult, female HHB (3-4 cm) with a vibrant orange shell and blue splotches. . 𝗕) Nymph (2cm) (5 instar/moulting stage). The colouration at this stage is amazing. . 𝗖) Cluster of blue exuviae (moulten shell) from likely the 3rd or 4th instar. These things threw me off a fair bit. . 𝗗) Closeup of an exuviae . 𝗘) Initially traced the nymphs back to this Kurrajong tree (𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘯 𝘱𝘰𝘱𝘶𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘴), which is part of the hibiscus family. The woody seed pods house the bug nymphs. . (𝗙) Then made my way over to this lacebark tree (𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘺𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘰𝘯 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘳) where the true infestation became apparent. Also has similar seed pods. .
