MOSCOW: Security services of Russia detained one of Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu’s deputies on suspicion of taking major bribes, the highest-profile corruption case since President Vladimir Putin sent troops into Ukraine in February 2022. A Night on the Edge in the Darien Gap-Part 2: We double-checked our low-lying beach location after our blind landing and apparently at high tide- particularly with the rising wind tide- the whole point we were on would be underwater in a few hours. On the maps it looked like we were not on land, but in water. I prepped dinner and kept an eye on the incoming sea while Mark headed down the beach in the darkness to look for higher ground. Strangely, about an hour later several sets of lights were headed my way and from the inky night a shaky Mark, sniffing dogs, and a dozen men in military fatigues armed with M4 machine guns emerged and surrounded me. ‘You brought reinforcements I see.’ I said to Mark. He was in no laughing mood however. He had walked to the ‘lighthouse’ to tell the people there we were fine as they’d shone their lights on us in the water during our battle in the crashing surf. Instead of a lighthouse, he rolled into a Colombian Naval Base and was quickly detained as half a dozen guns were trained on him. He thought he was dead- since for all he knew he’d stumbled upon a cartel lair. The base commander at first accused him of being a thief, but Mark managed to tell them we were on a kayak trip and camping a kilometre away. Apparently the whole peninsula is a naval base ( not marked on any maps) and no one unauthorized is allowed to be there….so all the soldiers marched down to our site, picked up everything from our camp and brought it back to the compound as the wind howled and lightning flashed in the sky. Things quickly went up the chain of command, so they held us in a sweltering room with a lonely bunk under 24-hour guard watch and said we would most likely be brought to the town of Turbo by the coast guard to be processed the next day.
