It finally arrived in the mail 🙂 After aprox. 5 years of hard work, sleepless nights and weekends stuck on my computer doing homework while others were enjoying life, I completed the 2 year diploma on disability Studies 👩🏻‍💻 Only God know how much I struggled, first due to English being my second language and because I had other things going on like planning my wedding.. well I'm more than ready to go to the official graduation-ceremony this June 📚💫🫶🏽 . .

Have you seen the new wheelchair symbol that is often found on the buttons to open doors or to signify accessibility? It’s not seen often where I live but this new symbol was created more than 10 years ago. Why change it you may ask? While the old symbol showed a person in a wheelchair, this new design shows the person in the wheelchair looking like they are moving. This symbol specifically challenges notions and stereotypes of disability. This new symbol shows how capable and competent people with disabilities are. This new symbol is often a great conversation starter about accessibility and inclusivity while in public. After learning about this design change in my program I have been keeping an eye out in public and this was the first time I had seen it. [Photo Description: The symbol is a person in a wheelchair in motion rather than the symbol that just has the person in the wheelchair not moving. This symbol is on an accessibility button for opening a door.] #Accessibility #Disability #DisabilityRights #Wheelchairs #DisabilityStudies

For many students, prom can be a high school rite of passage. From shopping for the perfect ensemble, to the nervous excitement of exchanging corsages and boutonnieres – prom is a landscape of new experiences and new feelings. So why is this often so different for disabled students? Why are disabled students so routinely and persistently excluded from this coming-of-age evening? Why do so many schools and organizations plan and host dances for disabled students, separate from nondisabled students? Read the full blog post, using the link in our bio, to learn more. And remember, when the right supports are put in place and all are welcome, we can all thrive TOGETHER. #Prom #PromSeason #InclusiveProm #TheNoraProject #Inclusion #Empathy #Disability #Friendship #Diversity #DisabilityInclusion #DisabilityStudies #SocialEmotionalLearning #SEL #InclusionMatters #InclusiveEducation #Teachers #DiversityEquityInclusion #DEI #Accessibility #UDL #UniversalDesign Image Descriptions: Informational slides have white titles on navy blue backgrounds with black body text on white backgrounds. #criticallegalstudies #disabilitystudies #disabilityrights #juranotalone #demokratie #feministischerechtswissenschaft #kennedeinerechte #rechtspolitik #rechtswissenschaft #jurastudium #rechtsreferendariat #weltverbesserer #campusverlag

I'm excited to announce that I will be an instructor for an autism specific course under UCLA's new disability major! Pretty cool given the fact that I had to drop out of public school in the 5th grade due to lack of supports. I've literally gone from the back of the room to the front of the room. UCLA recently announced it will provide the first disability studies major at a California public university. This new major becomes one of only a handful of programs in the country to examine disability as an historical, social, cultural and political experience, and to consider the way societies, cultures, institutions, spaces and mindsets produce perceptions of disability systemically and socially. #autism #mentalhealth #disabilities #UCLA #uclabruins #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #actuallyautistic #disabilitystudies

Now that everything is signed, I am really pleased to share that I've been awarded a Folger Fellowship to support a new project, "'Mend Your Speech': Elizabeth Inchbald, Communication Disorder, and the Remaking of Theatre History." This fellowship will help me spend Spring 2025 in residence at the Folger with time to research, think, and begin writing my way toward new ideas. Getting to come home to D.C. for an extended period feels like a gift, too. So much gratitude to my colleague Kat Williams for supporting my application and being such a dynamic interlocutor for these ideas. ______ #theatre #theater #history #drama #disabilitystudies #disability #communicationdisorder #dysfluency #folger #shakespeare #scholarship

🚨 Call For Abstracts 🚨 Disability and Fairy Tales: Keeping the magic, confronting the stigma. We're delighted to be co-organising this symposium with Professor Nicola Grove (founder of @frome_openstorytellers) This symposium is interested in discussing the nuances of disability representation in fairy tales, interrogating how writers, storytellers, publishers, teachers and academics use such tales to empower disabled people and preserve the disabled characters that have survived through generations. We’re also interested in the limitations of traditional fairy tales and the ways in which retellings and reinterpretations can challenge the negative or outdated tropes of the genre. We invite the submission of abstracts for presentations or creative performances (e.g. poetry readings or storytelling) that explore traditional fairy tales or contemporary retellings that centre disability, whether that be sensory, physical, learning, or neurological. Please send an abstract of 300-500 words to [email protected] by 30th September 2024 detailing the title of your presentation or performance and outlining what you intend to cover. DISABLED VOICES MATTER ♿️ we’re a week away from the release of Disability Intimacy: Essays on Love, Care, and Desire edited by Alice Wong, and i’m so excited to share my early review with you— alongside a quick recap of Disability Visibility too! i simply cannot state enough how much these two collections have impacted me as a young queer and disabled person. on the day i finished reading Disability Intimacy earlier this month, i had just finished a grueling doctor’s appointment where i left in tears after another reminder of how my pain was “unexplainable” and “untreatable,” and i once again had no answers to all the questions plaguing my mind and body. but there was a glimmer of hope— the empowering, diverse, and passionate essays of Disability Intimacy helped remind me that even when i feel alone, i’m not. the spoonie community has my back, whether it’s to celebrate our wins or to mourn our collective losses, and i am forever grateful to Alice Wong for putting these two collections together. Disability Visibility: First-Person Stories from the 21st Century revolutionized contemporary conversations about disability by centering disabled people in the narrative, and allowing us to tell our own stories. Disability Intimacy: Essays on Love, Care and Desire carries this torch with a new focus— physical, emotional, and communal intimacy through a uniquely disabled lens. the essays are approachable, multi-faceted, and deeply personal, and whether you’re a spoonie, a caregiver, or an abled person who’s unlearning ableism, these collections are the perfect place to start. thank you SO much to Alice Wong + Vintage Books for my gifted ARC to read and review! i’ve tagged as many contributors from each collection as i could find in the comments below— each creator’s work has changed + inspired me in countless ways~ ♿️ qotd: what’s the last book that made you feel seen / represented?

Enormously grateful to the students in my Health Humanities seminar for giving me this sweet card and a book they knew I’d love 🐈‍⬛ such a joy to dive deep with them into conversations about health, medicine, disability, ableism, and, most recently, sanism (thanks to our fantastic guest speaker @karen.marie.mccarthy !) 😊 #healthhumanities #disabilitystudies #madpride

Some days I am a live wire made flesh, 2024 I’ve been thinking about the ways memory lives in our bodies, the way my body always remembers the end of April even when my mind forgets, the way we learn and unlearn and move through ways of being, the ways that we hold some things so close that they almost seem to disappear. I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder as a child. Looking back, I think I was anxious because my body, and by extension the world, felt overwhelming and without an order that I could understand. I also think I had dysautonomia back then that contributed to hyperventilation attacks, my elevated heart rate and breathing spiraling off each other. 20 years later, I’ve come to terms with how linked mental health and my body are, that I am a bodymind (as coined by Margaret Price) rather than a mind separate from a body. Anxiety remains to be an ongoing vibration in my life, one in conversation with a body that does not always seem safe, one that remembers trauma intimately. I recently wrote that my body holds the instruction for the pattern of my thoughts, and that appears to be more and more true. The whole image seems to have a glow to it. #KinshipPhoto #MentalHealth #DisabilityStudies #ChronicIllness #ChronicallyIllArtist #HumbleArtsFoundation #SelfPortraiture #QueerPhotographer #TransPhotographer #ArtistWriter

Criptionary Spotlight of the Week: “Identity-first language & Person-first language” Criptionary is a project coming out of the UC Berkeley Disability Lab that aims to be a dedicated digital platform for disability studies and advocacy. Swipe left to learn more! And, don’t forget to tune in next week for more! #ucberkeley #criptionary #disabilitylab #radmadlab #crip #disability #disabilitystudies [Alt text/Visual description: Dark blue/navy background with white text. Slide 1 - RadMadLab Criptionary, “Identity-first language & Person-first language” Slide 2 - Identity-First/Person-First language, What is the difference? How do I know what to use? Slide 3 - Identity-first language**: “Disabled people” as opposed to “people with disabilities” positions disability as an identity category. For disabled people, having their disability(ies) as an aspect of their person describes membership within a wider cultural group, as well as an aspect of their individual body and mind that refuses to be “fixed,” “dealt with” or effaced. To understand disability as an inherent part of an individual’s identity emphasizes that the disability plays a role in who the person is, and reinforces disability as a positive cultural identifier. Slide 4 - “Person-first language**: “Person with quadriplegia” as opposed to “quadriplegic person” places emphasis on the person instead of on the disability. Person-first language is a way to emphasize the person and view the disorder, disease, condition, or disability as only one part of the whole person. Describe what the person “has” rather than what the person “is.” Person-first language avoids using labels or adjectives to define someone. Slide 5 - ** It is important to note that whether a person with a disability prefers people-first or identity-first language is NOT universal. If you are unsure as to whether you should use people-first or identity-first language, in order to be respectful, the best thing to do is to ask people themselves.]

People were lining the sides of the black box and we filled an overflow room with a live zoom. I love our students and our communities. Masculinities across cultural tides was a success. The student performers were captivating and inspiring. Hoping to keep reimagining this data set and book on the stage in new ways. Sydney Kincart, a disability studies and political science student, has made it a point to work on projects at the intersection of her disciplines. In addition to policy work in the Gender on the Hill legislative advocacy course offered through the School, Sydney has reshaped the Disability Law Center’s Community Lobbying and Advocacy Training Program. While there, she created resources to strengthen advocacy training and engagement. “Even though [disability is] something 1 in 4 people experience, there just is not a lot of awareness about how [they are] impacted by policy.” To read more about Sydney and other social equity policy work she has been involved in, check out the link in our bio! #UofUTransform #UofU #DisabilityStudies #DisabilityPolicy
