The four most common symptoms for children living with severe NKH are seizures, dystonia, brain damage and global development delay. But a 2019 study identified fifty-eight unique symptoms of NKH, classified into eleven categories: cognitive disorders, seizures, muscle/movement control, brain malformations/injury, respiration, hormonal disorders, hearing, eyesight, immune system and digestion. Of those eleven, four major domains emerged: cognitive disorders (81%), seizures (73%), muscle and movement dysfunctions (35%), and brain malformations (32%). They encompassed 46 of 58 (79% of) symptoms. The symptoms list is long, and includes (amongst other symptoms): Cognitive impairment, nonverbal/speech delay, intractable seizures, irregular EEGs, automatisms, eye deviation, epilepsy, multifocal clonus, CVI, brisk reflexes and clonus, flexor spasms, spasticity, dystonia, reduced deep tendon reflexes, inability to walk, ataxia, choreoathetosis, dysdiadochokinesia, psychomotor delay, severe spastic diplegia, global developmental delay, hemiparesis, hypotonia, dysphagia, lethargy, coma, thin corpus callosum, microcephaly, myelination pattern changes, restricted diffusion, apnea, respiratory distress, optic atrophy, nystagmus, and pyrexia. Needless to say - the symptoms of severe NKH has the potential to cause a lot of pain and discomfort. It’s time for the first Chronic Health Chronicles Story Time! Today, I’m talking about mobility aids. I have ME/CFS, POTS, Fibro, etc. After having Covid x3, my health is on a downward slope, and I’ve recently realized that I need a mobility aid if I’m going to leave my house and, you know, do things. As someone on disability with a fixed income, I am dependent on disability to pay for this. Recently, I took the first step in this process by having an assessment with a physiotherapist to determine what I will need. For weeks leading up to the appointment, I worried about it - what if the therapist thought I was a hypochondriac? What if they said there was nothing wrong with me and I didn’t need help? The imposter syndrome was running strong, and I felt almost powerless, resigned to the fate of someone who absolutely would not be taken seriously, regardless of how I experience my life and disability. The assessment was the most validating medical appointment I have ever had. While it was an unpleasant reality check with regards to my health, it was also so empowering. To have a medical practitioner listen to me, fully, and take what I said about how I experience life into consideration was such a rush of validation that I had big emotions after the appointment. Initially, I was resistant to the idea of using a mobility aid, but I’ve come around. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life unable to leave my house because I think I don’t need or DESERVE to have access to life. I know that the times I’ll be able to get out may be limited, but honestly, it will be better than where I’m at now. I want to share today about this chair. It’s a giant chair. Anyone with a disabled kid would recognise it - it’s called a Ppod. We were given a grant to get one, because they’re expensive. This one is moulded especially for Kai, but even still… The reason we got one is because Kai has three chairs. Two up/down position ones, and his wheelchair. They’re basically like sitting in a dining room table chair, with a little padding. Not very comfortable, and awkwardly, not very supportive because they need adjusting more often than we can get the reps out. Kai’s getting older, and his body bigger. His spine is beginning to twist into scoliosis and his hips are migrating out of their sockets and his neck and top of his spine are rounding… these musculoskeletal congenital malformations are typical of NKH, but oh my DAYS does it break my heart when he’s in pain. So we applied for a grant to get him a supportive armchair. Something comfy but still supportive. I think he likes it. Ps - Thank you everyone for your donations for NKH Awarness Day. I thought I’d share tonight’s late night thoughts…can you relate to any of them? - I’m scared that my health will get worse and I’ll have to close my tiny business…it’s one of the only things that brings me joy. - I’m frustrated with my GP for not taking my health problems more seriously - how many times can I possibly hear “I don’t know” from my doctor before it becomes too much? - I wish my chronic illnesses would let me sleep through the night - I forget what sleeping all night is like and I’m usually awake for 2-6 hours in the middle of the night. - I wish I wasn’t scared to try new medications because of the concern that they might cause my health to crash and make me worse. - Why is the night so still when my brain is so active? - How much longer can I go on like this before I break? I recognize that some of these thoughts may be unpleasant to think about, but they are my reality as a disabled person with chronic illnesses. For the first time in a long time, I don’t have anything I need to take at noon, but knowing how chronic illnesses work, I’m sure something will occupy that slot again soon. #NKHAwarenessDay is coming up, so we’ll be posting facts all week. NKH is an autosomal recessive disorder, which means, it occurs when a child inherits one mutated copy of a gene from each parent. The parents do not have the condition and are called carriers because they each carry one copy of the mutated gene which they pass to their child. Because of this, the statistical odds of having a child with NKH if both parents are carriers is 25%. NKH doesn’t have a NKH newborn screen, so most families won’t know, unless they have had a child with NKH previously. It also means that to have other children, there’s a risk. Families can either try conceive naturally (and test via a CVS or an amnio screening at 16 weeks to understand if the baby has NKH) or families can choose to conceive by IVF with genetic testing (called PGD), implanting only neurotypical embryos. For many IVF is financially prohibitive and not always an option. It also can be painful and traumatising. Equally, the anxiety of natural conception with invasive testing to see if the baby has NKH or not can also be traumatising. I posted in our stories last week about how we took Mikaere to see a lot of cars. That’s not exactly the whole truth. We were travelling to see family and part of the problem we have is that our boy can’t just use any toilet. We need a changing places facility, with a hoist and a changing table capable of holding his weight. This isn’t an easy thing to find and requires an intense amount of research before going anywhere. (Just for clarification, it’s estimated there are over 80 million toilets in the UK. There are only 2000 changing places facilities). This museum (the British Motor Museum) has one, funded by @musculardystrophyuk (thank god for them). This museum was about half way, had a changing places facility, a cafe that serves gluten free food (for Sam) and is aligned with our toddlers interests. Hallelujah! 🌟 When Bluey can’t be your babysitter 🌟 It’s a lovely Sunday morning, and I’m up with Jules. We have our deal: my dude takes Saturdays, and I take Sundays. But our lazy mornings look a bit different from most parents’. Jules couldn’t care less about screens. And while I agree that the iPad or TV shouldn’t be the babysitter, I can’t help but envy, at times, the parents who can switch on Bluey and steal a moment for themselves. Or engage with their children about what’s happening on the screen. I remember a friend of a friend once mentioning how her son was obsessed with Paw Patrol. She went on to say how lucky we were that Jules didn’t care about screens. And while I understand her frustration of watching the same episode repeatedly, comments like these sting. Some days, I’d give anything for those annoying Paw Patrol moments. Our weekends may look different from most, but for us, it’s all about finding our own magic recipe. #MSUnfiltered Seeing old photos of “my other Jenny” make my stomach churn with grief from the massive loss over the years of social interaction, fun, parties, all celebrations missed with friends, and cool vacations. Yes, for sure in this recent second life there is awesomeness and I can do more, but the social isolation is still very high. Because of severe fatigue, disability issues or because I’m in too much pain/body issues I can’t manage it. Here’s a smile for social media. PS - the dark brown hair was dyed, but I loved it 🥰
