Day 29 of National Autism Acceptance Month 🌟 Did you know autism is as diverse as the individuals who experience it? Co- Founder, @jacob_eusebio28 has always shared that despite growing up with his autistic younger brother, Evan, he still learned so much from each Serving Advantage student who had their own individual autism journey. 🌱Embracing spelling to communicate (S2C) is a journey, and like all journeys, it takes time and patience to see growth and progress. To those navigating the world of S2C, remember: every step forward is a victory. Whether you're a speller, family member, or communication partner, trust in the process and celebrate each milestone along the way. Just as a seed needs time to sprout and grow into a flourishing plant, your journey with S2C requires nurturing and perseverance. It's okay to take it one letter, one word at a time. Your voice matters, and your journey is valid. Every individual moves at their own pace. So, to all S2C learners, supporters, and advocates: keep going, keep believing, and keep growing. Together, we're building a future where every voice is heard and valued. 🌟💬 Ready to start your journey in S2C? Mondays are Spelling Days: What will you miss about Middle School? NOTHING; SOMETIMES TEASED… My biggest nightmare has come true. We started with this question: What will you miss about middle school? Each student in 8th Grade was asked this question so their answers can be included in the slideshow at graduation. Gabe very rigorously spelled NOTHING. I reminded him of some positive memories that I’m aware of like being on Cross Country and the weight room with Mr. Gardiner. Gabe spelled RUNNING and indicated that he meant running in the halls and as a sport. Gabe Spelled: LIKE MANY STUDENTS I WIlLL MISS MY GOOD CHILDHOOD At this point I had a question because I wasn’t sure if he was spelling that he likes many students and he will miss them along with his good childhood. I asked him if he was saying he likes many students. That’s when I wish we had stopped. Gabe Spelled: SOMETIMES TEASED I asked him where? Gabe Spelled: CLEAN CAFETERIA This is the first time Gabe has shared that he is teased at school. Gabe Spelled: YET OTHERS HAVE EASIER TIME CLEANING To Be Continued… #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #apraxia #spelling #rpm #aac #s2c #nonspeaking #nonverbal #nonverbalautism

The US Navy's ZPG-3W airship - 403 feet long, 85 feet in diameter, with a capacity of more than 1,500,000 cubic feet - was the world's largest blimp. Four of them were commissioned in 1958. One exploded and crashed 2 years later, and the Navy's retired the others by 1962. AAC stuff update! I got a new talker case because my old one broke. And I'm looking into trying RPM or S2C to see if it will help with my apraxia and unreliable speech so a friend made me some stencil letterboards! I really like them. The orange one glows in the dark. ID: Two images. The first is an ipad in a pink and purple pepkoo case with proloquo2go open on the screen. The second is a stack of letterboards. The top one is light purple and ABC layout. Under it is a light orange one. On the bottom of the stack is a set of three dark colored letterboards. We’re asked very often about PECS® as an AAC system. We wanted to be clear about where we stand on PECS® with all children, regardless of how they process language. We also wanted to add in information specific to gestalt language processing and provide some recommendations for what to consider instead. We say NO the PECS as an AAC system. There are many free, robust AAC alternatives available out there and there are NO prerequisites to starting with a more robust system. If you go to major AAC app websites, they have light tech boards and dynamic displays available to download and print for FREE (e.g. PRC-Saltillo, AssistiveWare, Tobii Dynavox). 💙 Follow us to be a changemaker @jesstheslp & @meaningfulspeech . When my friend @jamielinbrown asked me today “what has been one of the hardest parts about starting @channingsjoy” I knew my answer deep down, but it took me saying it out loud to really hit me. Let me explain. Creating our nonprofit has been one of the best things I’ve ever done. It has given me a sense of purpose on our autism journey and in life. It has made me feel like I can actually do something to help others and to turn grief into joy as much and as often as possible. But, in turn, it has also taken me away from my kids at times and forced me to lean on others in our family to really help me to be able to do the foundation AND care for my kids. Some people say, “how do you do it all?” And the truth is, I don’t. I rely on help from my family and while I wish so badly I could be the mom that does do it all, I don’t and I can’t. Because my family has stepped in to help me be able to do the foundation or go to events, I feel like Channing has learned to go to different family members rather than just me as “his person.” Yes, I do take him to school every day and pick him up every day, but while I used to be the only one around most of the time, that’s not the case any more. I just couldn’t do it by myself. Everyone in our immediate family now has a tight bond with Channing and while I LOVE it and could not survive without their help, it is clear for me to see he no longer just relies on me. It’s both beautiful and heartbreaking for me as a mom. I loved being his one and only, but truly, it’s best for him and for me if there are multiple people who can be “his” and gosh, how blessed is he to have that? I am so incredibly thankful my family has stepped in to help make my dreams for this foundation a reality. Selfishly, I want to always be his person, but truly, he’s too amazing for me to keep all to myself. And if I can’t forever be his one “person” I know I can and will always be his constant. 🩵🤟🏼

We talk about the importance of neurodiversity affirming care all the time, but did you know there are signs to look for that indicate an environment is not neurodiversity affirming? Recognizing these signs is crucial for creating supportive environments for neurodiverse individuals. From dismissing unique needs to imposing rigid expectations, these behaviors can hinder inclusion, understanding, and self-esteem, as well as expose our neurodiverse loved ones to potentially traumatic situations. Check out our graphic to learn more and join the conversation on fostering acceptance and support for all neurodiverse individuals. ✨In a world where routines shift like sand, Today’s course veers from what was planned. Countless days blend, no sheep to count, One small change sparks a tumultuous fount. He struggles to heed his body’s call, Sensing the storm rise, threatening to fall. His eyes, a tale etched in silent lore, Hand to his head, seeking an open door. But today, the usual tricks fail to mend, Rage ignites, a wildfire, no end. Mom stands close, a fortress, a shield, Can he release it all? Can he fully yield? She’s there, a steady presence, yet apart, Feeling his pain, her own trembling heart. As she grapples with the anguish, the fear, Their bond, their strength, becomes clear. In their shared journey, they face the unknown, Striving to conquer what’s never shown. He yearns to express, she seeks to erase, Together they stand, in their sacred space. #autism #autistic #autismawarenessandacceptance #autismadvocacy #nonspeaking #nonspeakingautism #nonspeakingdoesnotequalnonthinking #ocdsupport #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #mamayougotthis #ocdlife #poem #poetry

The nonspeaking community continues to be very toxic towards the intellectually disabled community. And continues to throw them under the bus in many cases. I’ve had a discussion with a nonspeaking person, and they said how they use the term nonspeaking because they don’t want to be associated with intellectually disabled people. And how separating yourself from intellectually disabled people isn’t bad. That sealed the cake for me, and I’ve been using nonverbal and reclaiming it in a way. If you want to be separated from me then fine. But then don’t come crying to me and saying why I should use the term nonspeaking when a HUGE part of the nonspeaking community hates intellectually disabled people and wants to be separated from them. Intellectually disabled people who can’t speak or can speak very little are here. We use the terms we want to use. We do not want to be separated, but i won’t force myself into a community that hates me. #nonverbal #nonspeaking #nonspeakingautism #nonverbalautism #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #nonspeakinghistory

"Does AAC use prevent speech development?" It's a common question asked by many families who are just exploring AAC for their children, so let's dive deeper! AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) isn't a roadblock to speech development; it's a game-changer! Here's why: 1️⃣ Individualized Support: AAC interventions are customized to suit each person's unique needs. By providing alternative communication methods, we ensure everyone has a voice, supporting speech development in the process. 2️⃣ Early Intervention: Introducing AAC early on doesn't hinder speech development; it jumpstarts it! By fostering language-rich environments and reducing communication barriers, AAC encourages natural speech progression from the get-go by increasing opportunities to communicate. 3️⃣ Complementary, Not Competing: AAC doesn't replace speech—it complements it. Think of it as scaffolding; it supports communication while individuals work on their speech skills, ensuring they stay engaged and motivated throughout the process. 4️⃣ Expanding Communication Opportunities: AAC opens doors to communication in various settings, providing more opportunities for language exposure and social interaction. These experiences are vital for speech development and overall language skills. 5️⃣ Addressing Underlying Challenges: Many individuals who benefit from AAC have underlying conditions that affect speech production. AAC helps address these challenges while simultaneously fostering speech development through language modeling and interaction. So, does AAC use prevent speech development? Absolutely not! It enhances it by empowering individuals to communicate effectively, fostering language skills, and laying the foundation for lifelong communication success. Ready to start your AAC journey? APT in Northbrook, IL is here to help. Visit us at amplifyingpotential.com for more information on our services. #AAC #SpeechDevelopment #CommunicationForAll

S&A members answer the question: ✨What does reading look like for you? ✨ While apraxia impacts all areas of the body, including eye muscles, our members are still able to access the joy of reading! Limited control of the eye muscles makes using a letter board that much harder and shows just how determined our spellers are. The good news is, as one of our members put it, “There are LOTS OF WAYS TO READ” - Joel Nyland. During the month of April, please be AWARE that non-speaking autistics can access reading, ACCEPT that reading may look different for them than it does for you, and EMPOWER the autistic people in your life to access reading for themselves! 📖 Image description: A photo of Joel Nyland holding up the Laminated S&A #ECD board and smiling. So in Phineas’ last PPT we were all sharing how far he has come with moving around. They have focused on making sure he builds his strength and have him walk all over school and he is starting to carry things too. This is such a fantastic development! We see it at home too. He is going up and down stairs like a pro, exploring different rooms, and really acting like he owns the place lol. This morning he took this exploration to new heights. He decided to go into the bathroom, plug the sink, turn it on, and… leave. We only discovered this about 30 minutes later. Looks like we won’t need to wash the bathroom floor for a bit… Happy Saturday! #autism #nonspeaking #flood

Some days you just have to communicate in a sensory friendly/slightly odd way 🤪 … also to just be accepting that this is what we are going to get communication wise sometimes and that’s okay too ❤️❤️ #Autism #AAC #AACUser #AutismAcceptance #AutismAwareness #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent #NonSpeaking #NonVerbal #NonVerbalAutism #Proloquo2Go #HomeschoolLife #Sensory #NeurodiverseHomeschooling

Every day, we entrust our precious child to others. It's not easy—it's a leap of faith. We believe they'll care for our little one with the same love we do. But sometimes, we're let down. 💔 Yet, we keep trusting. Because trust isn't about perfection; it's about believing in the goodness of hearts. We're warriors of silent courage, holding onto hope even when words fail us. 🙏 #samisjourney #autism #nonverbal #nonverbalautism #nonspeaking #learningdisability #severeautism #severelearningdisabilities #autismjourney #autismreality #TrustInOthers #ParentingJourney #SilentStrength #LoveUnspoken #HeartfeltTrust #SometimesWeFall #NeverStopBelieving #family #autismacceptance #autismawareness #son #autismparents #specialneedsparenting #hiddendisability #SpecialNeedsFamily #trust #reality #explore # #instadaily

When the light is too bright for me to open my eyes in photos, I often just don't! The photos still turn out just fine. This is an adjustment I sometimes make as an autistic model! Understanding Apraxia/Dyspraxia 🌟 Ever experienced the frustration of knowing exactly what you want to do, but your body just won't cooperate? That's the reality for many individuals living with apraxia/dyspraxia. Apraxia/dyspraxia is more than just a disorder that can lead to articulation errors; it's a complex neurological condition that impacts skilled movement. Imagine having the ability and the desire to perform certain actions, yet struggling to translate those thoughts into actions. It's like having a mental blueprint of what you want to do, but encountering a roadblock when trying to execute it. This condition challenges individuals to bridge the gap between intention and action. They can vividly conceptualize the task at hand, yet encounter difficulties in coaxing their bodies to follow through, especially when asked to replicate movements or perform on command. Interestingly, while these challenges may hinder deliberate actions, individuals with apraxia/dyspraxia often excel in spontaneous and automatic actions. It's a testament to the intricate nature of the human brain and how different areas can function independently. Spelling and text-based augmentative and alternative Communication (AAC) recognizes the challenges posed by the brain-body disconnect in individuals with motor planning difficulties. Unlike traditional modeling-based approaches, text-based AAC focuses on teaching the motor skills needed to access communication without relying solely on imitation. Even after observing a model repeatedly, some individuals may struggle to execute the motor plan. By acknowledging this disconnect, we can tailor interventions to effectively teach new motor plans, enabling access to letter boards and other essential skills previously out of reach. This approach also considers visual motor deficits, ensuring a more holistic and empowering communication journey. Are you ready to begin your child's journey to open communication? Hi all! Lincoln had a tough day at school earlier this week unfortunately because something was off with his device. I had to guide the teachers to help them fix it but I think it was still acting up. That is one of Link major challenges. He gets really upset when something is not exactly the way he wants it or can’t find something. It’s so hard, especially when I can’t fix it for him right away! He felt better when he went to the playground at school later that day thankfully, and one of his teachers took this beautiful picture! #autismawarenessmonth #autismacceptancemonth #nonspeaking #fcvblogsquad #emotionregulation #aac #specialeducation

It has been a crazy busy week around our house. I haven’t had time to even think of a post. But today I got this picture from school because they noticed Fletch was having a hard time in the cafeteria and tried out some headphones for him. He loved it! And looked mighty cute too. Thursdays are Spelling Days: SOME HOPE GOING STRONG. BOYHOOD IS TOUGH, SUPPORT NEEDED FASTER. IS QUITE NEW AND SCARY After Gabe spelled each word he went to his device and typed it. He is getting faster at spelling with the letter board and typing on his device. Typing is not as easy for him. I kept thinking about what he was saying. “Some hope going strong” this is positive! “Boyhood is tough, support needed faster. Is quite new and scary” Wow! Needing more support is something he shares about a lot. I am proud of him for being able to identify that he feels scared. Ingrid told him he is not alone in feeling this way. She is right! When he finished he was happy and laughing again. What a relief it must be to get that out. We have been reading Underestimated: An Autism Miracle, by JB Handley and his son Jamison Handley. I did not get to hear all of it yet, but Caroline finished reading it to Gabe. Each night we shed many tears. I highly recommend it, please get this book if you have an interest in learning about this method of communication. It makes you feel hopeful and it also makes you feel regret. For not presuming competence and for not giving Gabe this opportunity sooner. He is not yet 15 and he is on his way to freedom. I know it. We have a lot to discuss with Gabe tonight. @ckcrab7 #autism #apraxia #spelling #rpm #s2c #nonverbal #nonverbalautism #nonspeaking #autismawareness #autismacceptance

📞Phone calls can be extremely challenging for autistic people. Here are some of the reasons why: 1️⃣ Phone calls are unpredictable and there is no time to prepare for an answer or to process information. 2️⃣There is no body language in a phone call, which makes it even harder than normal to interpret what you mean and to process information. 3️⃣It is even harder than usual to gauge social cues. It gets super difficult to know when is our time to speak. 4️⃣Unexpected phone calls change your expected plans and make it difficult to transition from one activity to another. 5️⃣Phone calls can feel more intense and the autistic person might feel pressured to say 'yes' to everything. 💫Please, for sessions or other queries, contact me by: 📱Whatsapp ✉️Email 💬Text #autismacceptance #autismcelebration #autisticadults #inclusivecommunication #autisticcommunity #actuallyautistic #autistic #autisticpride #autisticsupport #phonecalls #autisticburnoutisreal #autisticmasking #autismselfcare #nonspeaking #processingdelay #NeurodivergentCommunity #neurodiversity #neurodiversitycelebrationweek
