Rockhall is an altered tower house which dates from the 16th century. This was home to Sir Robert Grierson of Lag, a notorious persecutor of Covenanters. When the first tower was built at Rockhall is not known, however the estate originally belonged to the Kirkpatrick of Closeburn family. In 1412 Gilbert Grierson, 2nd of Lag, married Isabel Kirkpatrick, daughter of Sir Duncan Kirkpatrick of Torthorwald, and Rockhall eventually passed to their son Vedast Grierson and so into the Grierson family with whom it would remain until the 1950s. . #history #scottishtower #scotland #visitscotland #scottishcastle #castle #scottishhistory #grierson #rockhalltower

Did you know this is where they filmed Archie’s castle in the children’s TV show Balamory? It’s Fenton Tower, East Lothian and one of my favourite Scottish castles. And it was only recently saved from ruin - swipe to see the extraordinary transformation from nearly a pile of stones back to noble beauty. Just shows what you can do with some dosh and dedication. I love a fortified tower, they seem more purposeful and proud than the sorts of rambling piles the Victorians built. The tower has been restored excellently, and thankfully the interior hasn’t been Disneyified. It’s pared back and beautiful, allowing the bones of the building to be the star of the show. You can stay here, definitely one for the wish list… #scottishcastle #eastlothian #visitscotland #explorescotland #scottishbuildings #scottishtower #scottishstays #scottishvacation #scottishholiday #stayinascottishcastle #northberwick

Clackmannanshire might be the “Wee County” but it has some really interesting historic sites. We visited Sauchie Tower today as part of the Doors Open Day Weekend - a 15th century tower house it is pretty decrepit outside but surprisingly, there are quite a lot of interesting interior details left. Pic 2 is the great hall fireplace and one of the window niches complete with built in cupboard. Love seeing inside buildings which are normally closed to the public. Like a lot of these historic buildings it has a society of really knowledgeable people (in this case the Friends of Sauchie Tower) doing lots of work to excavate the site and preserve the tower #doorsopenday #sauchietower #discoverclackmannanshire #clackmannanshire #towerhouse #15thcentury #scottishhistory #scottishtower #restoration #history #localhistory #visitscotland #15thcenturyarchitecture

Cardrona Tower II: When James took over the lands including the tower, he soon built his own place at the bottom of the house, known as Cardona House, an inscription stone in the house dates it to 1686 and so it is safe to say that Williamson only lived in Cardrona Tower for a year if at all before he abandoned it for the grander and more comfortable house. Ever since the tower has been inhabited by a colony of bats which reside in the basement of the ruin. However, they seem to have moved in quite a while after 1794 since according to notes the building was ‘still almost entire’ at that point. But even today the height of the tower is almost complete although the general impression is more an absolute ruin. There is not much of a busy fighting history connected to Cardrona Tower and its decay and so it is no wonder that in the middle of the 19th century there were still remains of the wall surrounding the tower, remains of which might still be partially hidden below the green but are mostly overgrown or gone by now. Overlooking the Tweed Valley and the River Tweed, Cardrona means Castle on the ridge and must have had a lovely view into all directions back in its day. However, today you can’t walk up the tower anymore so it leaves to be imagined what the owners must have seen when looking out their bedroom window. .... . . . #scotlandisnow #visitscotland #scotspirit #thisisscotland #scotlandmagazine #scotland #alba #loveforscotland #scotslove #scottish #scottishhistory #schottland #alluring_scotland #ascottishworld #beautifulcountry #caladonia #scottishhistory #thescottishcollective #cardronatower #Cardrona #scottishlowlands #Lowlands #scottishtower #tower #scottishborders #thescottishborders #peebles #tweedvalley #towerhouse #ruin #scotlandphotography

Cardrona Tower I: Cardrona Tower is definitely a sight that most people miss out on, even if they walk through the Cardrona forest they either don’t see it or don’t put a lot of thought in what function the tower once had. Being a perfect example of the wish of many lairds to show invaders and basically simply everyone that they could afford what was a clear symbol of moderate defensibility, even if just in a small version, Cardrona Tower had a more important role throughout history as well. Once having consisted of the L-shaped peel tower and a courtyard on the south-west side of the tower, the role it played was that of some kind of a defensive warning system throughout the Tweed valley. The tower wasn’t the only one which most certainly could have been used for warning, the signal would have started in Elibank and would have gone through Holylee, Scrogbank, Caberston, Bold, Purvishilll, Innerleithen, Traquair, Grieston, Ormiston, Cardona, Nether Horsburgh, Horsburgh, Haystoun, Peebles, Neidpath, Caverhill, Barns, Lyne, Easter Happrew, Easter Dawyck, Hillhouse, West Dawyck, Dreva to Tinnis. All those towers stood within visible distance of the former and the later and would by that be perfect to protect the area from invading forces of every kind and in each direction. Once having been a home to the Govan family, most certainly one of its many branches, the former dwelling was located on the site during the fourteenth century before the present tower was erected some time during the late 1500s. The Govans possessed the lands of Cardrona from the 14th until the 17th century, when their financial hardship resulted in its sale to James Williamson of Hutchinfield in 1685 about 100 years after Cardrona Tower was.... . . . #scotlandisnow #visitscotland #scotspirit #thisisscotland #scotlandmagazine #scotland #alba #loveforscotland #scotslove #scottish #scottishhistory #schottland #alluring_scotland #ascottishworld #beautifulcountry #caladonia #scottishhistory #thescottishcollective #cardronatower #Cardrona #scottishlowlands #Lowlands #scottishtower #tower #scottishborders #thescottishborders #peebles #tweedvalley #towerhouse #ruin #scotlandphotography

Such an unassuming, crumbly tower. But the memory of it makes me smile. Nerdy me is smiling because it was the final bit of the Tower Trail I'd not yet visited. Squishy me is smiling because I remember how @stetted helped navigate here as part of my nerdy quest. It's always good to have friends who understand & celebrate the things you love. 📍Alloa Tower, Clackmannanshire Alloa Tower is one of the four towers found on The Tower Trail in Clackmannanshire. It was once the home of the 6th Earl of Mar, leader of the 1715 Jacobite Rising. Mary, Queen of Scots and her son, James VI, both spent part of their childhoods here. The Tower dates back to the 14th century. 📸 by @wayfaringkiwi11 : : : : : : #thetowertrail #alloatower #alloa #nationaltrustforscotland #clackmannanshire #visitclackmannanshire #visitclacks #scottishcastle #scottishcastles #scottishtower #medievaltower #visitscotland #hiddenscotland #secretsofscotland #scotland_greatshots #scotlandtravel #scotlandexplore #scotlandshots #scotland_insta #scotlandlover #scotlandphotography #scotlandisnow

Fairburn curtains in situ. Fittingly, only the top floor of the tower required curtains, the windows on the other floors being served by wooden shutters. So the cow and calf have found their way back to the garret, hanging at the little dormer window reinstated by the project's masons and covering the two doorways into the bartizan turrets. These are thickly interlined against the unheated spaces behind, helping to insulate this cosy room which enters the roofspace. The print colour to match @farrowandball timber paintwork (out of shot) on a beige background has quite a muted antique feeling alongside the new joinery and fittings of the restoration. The rest of the room is furnished by @john.evetts, with some cleverly sourced 'cow horn' chairs continuing the theme alongside the iron poles wrought by @landmarktrust's longstanding blacksmith Chris. #textiledesign #patternmaking #screenprint #screenprintedtextiles #handprinted #handprintedtextiles #fabricdesign #bespoketextiles #bespokefabrics #historicinteriors #scottishinteriors #interiortextiles #textiledesigner #fairburn #fairburntower #landmarktrust #landmarkfurnishings #landmarkcurtains #fairburncalf #cowfabric #scottishdesign #towerhouse #scottishtower #fairytaletower #towerrestoration #restoration #historicenvironmentscotland #scottishhighlands #rossandcromarty #duncantattersall

At the top of Fairburn Tower. When the time came to hang my curtains, my own journey up the tower felt more than a little surreal. I had last gazed up through its empty stair turret from ground level, the disc of bright sky above punctuated by a few shards of stone jutting from its walls like fragmented teeth, the only remnants of its lost staircase. Now, I followed new spiral steps through the tower's five floors, thinking of the cow's fabled ascent as I trailed armfuls of fabric up each flight. The reinstated stair has been painstakingly cast in concrete, step by step, stitching the turret back to the main tower after decades of the two peeling apart. At its summit, a beautifully uplifting space is revealed, open to the rafters where once would have been a little cap house. #fairburntower #fairburn #fairburnestate #towerhouse #ruin #scottishtower #scottishruin #fairytaletower #towerrestoration #restoration #landmarktrust #historicenvironmentscotland #scottishhighlands #rossandcromarty #historicbuildings

Seven years ago, I visited a ruin. Having slipped and slid my way up a long farm track on foot, car abandoned at the bottom after a near disastrous attempt to negotiate the icy ascent, I finally reached Fairburn Tower. Its back turned to my approach, the tower brooded dark and lonely in the Highland landscape. Decrepit yet resolute after centuries of decline, it's completed restoration was but a distant prospect at that point in time. Yet unbeknownst to me, my very unofficial visit followed a scoping one from Landmark's heads of departments the day before. Quite by chance, and to my great advantage, I found their access ladder to the otherwise unreachable first floor still in situ. Up I scurried before anyone had chance to tell me otherwise, finding myself unexpectedly yet thrillingly enclosed in the honeycomb relic of Fairburn's interior. Arches soared, stones teetered, rooks called across a ragged patch of winter-blue sky overhead. A ruin with a capital R, Fairburn was floorless, roofless, yet not entirely hopeless. I marvelled at its survival, and made a silent wish for its redemption. Before returning down the ladder I paused at a window, partially infilled by the gable end of a corrugated cowshed tacked onto the Tower's eastern flank when it became a mere ancillary building to the adjacent farm. Bizarre as it sounds, I took out a tape measure and noted the dimensions of the craggy stone void. Much like Fairburn's revival, my contribution to Landmark furnishing was a vague hope on the horizon, yet I dared to dream of one day hanging curtains at the lofty heights of those re-glazed windows. Writing the figures in my notebook, in that moment I imprinted a hope for my future in this shell of the past. #fairburntower #fairburn #fairburnestate #towerhouse #ruin #scottishtower #scottishruin #fairytaletower #towerrestoration #restoration #landmarktrust #historicenvironmentscotland #scottishhighlands #rossandcromarty #historicbuildings

I am sworn to secrecy on the Fairburn interiors for now, but this one is no great spoiler. This vaulted chamber on the ground floor was the tower's defensive underbelly; accessible only via a concealed stair internally from the first floor. It's thick walls were originally pierced with a dozen gunloops, of which the left-hand and centre in this picture were blocked with the addition of the later stair tower. This was the only 'room' to eventually remain in existence after the building had fallen into ruin, and has stayed essentially untouched through the restoration. The result is an incredibly atmospheric space, where you can quite easily imagine the threat of marauders approaching in more lawless times. #fairburntower #fairburn #fairburnestate #highlands #scottishhighlands #easterross #towerhouse #castlesofscotland #landmarktrust #scottishcastle #scottishtower #rossandcromarty #gunloop #barrelvault

Gilnockie Tower II: .... By 1978 the tower was a roofless ruin which was bought by yet another Armstrong, Major T.C.R. Armstrong-Wilson, who restored the whole tower. It was during those restorations that the floors were reconstructed and electricity and water was taken into the building, amongst many other works. Though of those restorations the tower still was closed down in 2015 and some major repairs were made, mainly to take the building back to how it would have looked like during the 16th century, installing some extra safety measures to make it a 21st century visitor centre. And then the day had come… 1April 2018 Gilnockie Tower reopened and with it the Clan Armstrong Centre, consisting of the authentic clan leaders house with its Grand Hall and Master Bedroom. It also houses the Clan Armstrong Museum which before had been located in Langholm, but the artefacts relating to Clan Armstrong are now on display at Gilnockie Tower, including a special corner devoted to the first Man on the Moon, Neil Alden Armstrong. The tower is now internationally recognised as the ancestral home of the Armstrong Clan! .... . . . #scotlandisnow #visitscotland #scotspirit #thisisscotland #scotlandmagazine #scotland #alba #loveforscotland #scotslove #scottish #scottishhistory #schottland #alluring_scotland #ascottishworld #beautifulcountry #caladonia #scottishhistory #scottishcollective #gilnockietower #towerhouse #reivers #scottishborderreivers #dumfriesandgalloway #gilnockie #scottishtower #Lowlands #scottishlowlands #clanarmstrong #museum #armstrong #johnnyarmstrong

Gilnockie Tower Part I: Situated on the bank of the River Esk, the cream sandstone building which is today known as Gilnockie Tower was originally called Hollows Tower. The Tower is not to be confused with Gilnockie Castle, which is said to be located close by, but the Tower is not the Castle still! The nearby town of Hollows was built around 1520 by the outlaw Johnnie Armstrong and his brother Thomas Armstrong. Just eight years later however, the tower was burned by the English Warden of the Western Marches and two years later in 1530, Johnnie Armstrong and 50 followers were hanged by James V. After being rebuilt, the tower was damaged by English raids in the 1540s. After those raids it again was rebuilt, adding a new parapet walk and a beacon stance on the gable. The whole story of the border reiver Johnnie Armstrong was romanticised in Sir Walter Scott’s Johnnie Armstrong. ... . . . #scotlandisnow #visitscotland #scotspirit #thisisscotland #scotlandmagazine #scotland #alba #loveforscotland #scotslove #scottish #scottishhistory #schottland #alluring_scotland #ascottishworld #beautifulcountry #caladonia #scottishhistory #scottishcollective #gilnockietower #towerhouse #reivers #scottishborderreivers #dumfriesandgalloway #gilnockie #scottishtower #Lowlands #scottishlowlands #clanarmstrong #museum #armstrong #johnnyarmstrong

Fourmerkland Tower II: ..... The Maxwells and the Johnstones being two feuding clans the tower and the surrounding land might have often been the scene of many feuds. Robert Fergusson purchased the patronage of the parish of Holywood by 1720. From 1896 onwards however, the tower was allowed to fall into decay, and it wasn’t repaired until 1964. ..... . . . . #scotlandisnow #visitscotland #scotspirit #thisisscotland #scotlandmagazine #scotland #alba #loveforscotland #scotslove #scottish #scottishhistory #schottland #alluring_scotland #ascottishworld #beautifulcountry #caladonia #scottishhistory #fourmerkland #fourmerklandtower #towerhouse #scottishtowerhouse #scottishtower #dumfriesandgalloway #Dumfries #galloway #scottishcastles #Lowlands #scottishlowlands

Fourmerkland Tower Part I: Located in the county of Dumfries and Galloway, Fourmerkland tower is a small tower house dating back to 1590, according to a heraldic panel above the doorway. The panel along the date also contains the Maxwell arms and the initials of Robert Maxwell and his wife. Though the panel dating to 1590 the foundations of the tower are known to be way older than that. The private land on which the tower stands is entirely surrounded by trees and is overlooking a small pond. Having had the village schoolmaster as its last tenant Fourmerkland is now unoccupied but in a good state. With the surrounding land being marshy it was for sure one of the reasons for its former occupation by the powerful Maxwell family. ..... . . . . #scotlandisnow #visitscotland #scotspirit #thisisscotland #scotlandmagazine #scotland #alba #loveforscotland #scotslove #scottish #scottishhistory #schottland #alluring_scotland #ascottishworld #beautifulcountry #caladonia #scottishhistory #fourmerkland #fourmerklandtower #towerhouse #scottishtowerhouse #scottishtower #dumfriesandgalloway #Dumfries #galloway #scottishcastles #Lowlands #scottishlowlands

F A I R B U R N. T O W E R Being a SPAB Scotland member lets you in to some pretty special places, and when we can we arrange trips to see work in progress and talk with the experts. Earlier this week we had a special tour of Fairburn Tower, formlery a ruin which is being transformed into holiday accommodation by @landmarktrust It's a spectacular project and one we have been following all year. It is a great opportunity for training apprentices in traditional crafts and ensuring that historic buildings can be successfully cared for in the future. Thanks too must go to @simpsonandbrown for their key part in the project. One of our visitors writes: We were so lucky and privileged to see the Fairburn Tower earlier this week. Stewart and site foreman Andy from @ltm_group gave us a wonderful tour. We were very lucky with the weather window…! Great to see real crafts people working in stone, lime work, slating and some extremely complicated concrete casting for the new staircase. Thank you so much for organising the trip! Many thanks! 🏰👍🏻 And if course, if you'd like to join us on future trips full details of how to become a member are on our website. Waterloo Tower - This 19th century hill tower is a common sight from much of the Borders, and was built to commemorate the Duke of Wellington's triumph over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. - The tower can be reached by a marked footpath, starting from Harestanes Visitor Centre, just off the B6400, a few hundred metres east of its intersection with the A68. - Although the tower interior is usually closed to the public, the key can be obtained from the Lothian Estates Office at Bonjedward for a small fee, allowing you access to the spiral staircase within, leading to the balcony at the top of the tower. - Even without access to the tower, the hill summit offers excellent views over the surrounding landscape and is an enjoyable and rewarding walk. - Thanks for the amazing shot from: 📸 @a_mac_photo - - - - #waterloomonument #visitscottishborders #exploretheborders #scottishheritage #scottishtower #viewpoint #explorescotland #bonniescotland #scotland #connectedcampers #outdoors #lovetheoutdoors #lovescotland #getoutside #scottishoutdoors #scottishlandscape #scotlandphotography #explore #travelguide #scottishtravel #onlyinscotland #waterlootower #visitscotland #battleofwaterloo #lovescotland

What have you been doing to keep sane during lockdown?? .🏔. I’ve realised how fortunate we truly are to live so close to the sea some awesome walks and some incredible place of Scottish History. .🏔. This time round I didn’t want to waste it vegged on the sofa watching countless documentaries wondering why I couldn’t travel. I wanted to use this time to learn. Learn how to be a better photographer/videographer learn to explore the surrounding I have on my doorstep and learn more history of the places we visit so we can give better insights from places we visit. .🏔. And today’s exploration was no exception as we took the short walk to the lady’s Tower in Elie. .🏔. The Lady's Tower was built in 1770 for Lady Janet Anstruther. .🏔. “As we understand it Jenny used the Tower as a viewpoint where she could sit to watch the world go by and recover from bathing/immersion. She changed in the man-made cave on the beach below the Tower.” – Elie & Earlsferry History Society She was the daughter of a Scottish merchant and renowned for her beauty and reputation as a flirt. Prior to her skinny dip she sent out one of her servants into the town of Elie to ring a bell to let residents know to stay away! .🏔. However skinny dipping in today’s windy cold weather was out of the question maybe tomorrow if I’m feeling brave enough

I found this view through the reeds interesting, as last year's fragile decaying reeds contrasted with the solidity of the decaying historic stone tower, yet their similarity in colour connected them. #Ochils,   #Ochilshills, #Skinflats, #RSPB, #rspbskinflatsnaturereserve, #Innerforthlandscapes, #Riverforth, #Innerforthlandscapeinitiative, #Scottishnaturereserve, #Scottishwetlands, #scotlandoutdoors, #Wetlandreeds, #Wetlands,   #Wetland, #Wetlandconservation #Wetlandplants, #Scottishcastles, #scottishtower #Historicscotland, #visitscotland, #beautifulscotland, #scottishartist, #scottishlandscapetartist, #scottishlandscape, #falkirk,   #visitfalkirk
