. 📍Sauchie Tower 📕 Bone Smith I enjoyed doing a part of the tower trail last week, a wee adventure indeed. This tower sadly has seen better days but Sauchie Tower, also known as Devon Tower, is a 15th-century tower house that was raised by William Shaw, King James VI’s Master of Works. . . . . . #bookstagramscotland #bookish #visitscotland #books #bookstagram #bonesmith #fairyloot #sauchietower #visitscotland #scotland_greatshots #scotlandexplore #scotlandlover #readingtime #readersgonnaread #scotlandisnow #scotlandtrip #tower #historic #historicscotland @histenvscot #readmorebooks #bookphotography #bookaddict #bookadventure

Atmospheric in Sauchie Tower (the light they had in this little vaulted chamber stopped working - thankfully as it was stupidly bright and headache inducing!). #clackmannanshire #doorsopendays #doorsopendayscotland #sauchie #sauchietower

Sauchie Tower today for Doors Open Day(s) in Clackmannanshire (we also went to Alloa Tower, but that was decidedly less interesting). Nice to go to places you wouldn’t normally get inside, and while the tower is crumbling, but stabilised, outside, it’s really really interesting inside. #clackmannanshire #doorsopendays #doorsopendayscotland #sauchie #sauchietower #scotland

Clackmannanshire might be the “Wee County” but it has some really interesting historic sites. We visited Sauchie Tower today as part of the Doors Open Day Weekend - a 15th century tower house it is pretty decrepit outside but surprisingly, there are quite a lot of interesting interior details left. Pic 2 is the great hall fireplace and one of the window niches complete with built in cupboard. Love seeing inside buildings which are normally closed to the public. Like a lot of these historic buildings it has a society of really knowledgeable people (in this case the Friends of Sauchie Tower) doing lots of work to excavate the site and preserve the tower #doorsopenday #sauchietower #discoverclackmannanshire #clackmannanshire #towerhouse #15thcentury #scottishhistory #scottishtower #restoration #history #localhistory #visitscotland #15thcenturyarchitecture

Clackmannanshire is well known for its castles, but Sauchie Tower is definitely one of the more off-the-beaten-track examples! Built sometime in the mid 1400s by Sir James Schaw, comptroller (or account auditor) to James III, the property is now owned by a local heritage trust and eventual restoration may be on the cards. For now the tower is simply a derelict though attractive structure which has survived much better than the courtyard buildings that once surrounded it. It doesn’t merit travelling for miles to see, but Sauchie Tower makes a logical extension to visiting nearby Menstrie Castle or Alloa Tower. 📌 Sauchie Tower, Fishcross, Clackmannanshire 🔗 More info: https://sobt.co.uk/sauchie-tower/ 📷 September 2016 #scotlandoffthebeatentrack #sobt #scotland #sauchietower #castle #fishcross #clackmannanshire

Such an unassuming, crumbly tower. But the memory of it makes me smile. Nerdy me is smiling because it was the final bit of the Tower Trail I'd not yet visited. Squishy me is smiling because I remember how @stetted helped navigate here as part of my nerdy quest. It's always good to have friends who understand & celebrate the things you love. Clackmannanshire Towers, Scotland Scotland’s smallest county is home to a number of surviving Late Medieval/Early Modern tower houses, with four presented here in one post for your convenience; 1) Menstrie Castle; 2) Sauchie Tower; 3) Clackmannan Tower; (4) Alloa tower Menstrie Castle was built around 1560, and was the birthplace in 1567 of William Alexander, founder of Nova Scotia. It was burned by the Great Montrose during the Civil War, and restored afterwards. Sauchie Tower was built by Sir James Schaw in the mid-1400s, and kept in the Schaw family until the 1700s, after which it was gutted by fire and left derelict. Clackmannan Tower stands on land which once belonged to the Scottish crown, with a royal residence possibly existing here in the mid-1100s. A royal castle was certainly standing here by 1200. David II sold this to his cousin Robert Bruce (not that one) in 1359, with the earliest surviving parts dating to this time. It was extensively remodelled in the 1400s, and inhabited until the death of the eccentric Katherine Bruce in 1791. Alloa Tower was built in the early 1300s as a royal fortification, and expanded over the subsequent centuries. Both Queen Mary and James VI spent time here as children. It eventually passed to the Erskine family, and was renovated in the early 1700s by John Erskine, Earl of Mar, leader of the 1715 Jacobite Rising. #clackmannanshire #castle #castles #castlesofinstagram #castles_oftheworld #medievalcastle #castleruins #castlesofscotland #menstriecastle #sauchietower #clackmannantower #alloatower #alloa #clackmannan #ruins #abandonedplaces #scottishhistory #scotland #igscotland #visitscotland #explorescotland #hiddenscotland #scotlandlover #history #historygram #historylesson #historicplaces #historicalplace #historylovers #uk

Next stop on the Tower Trail takes us to Sauchie Tower, less than four miles from Menstrie Castle Stay. In 1321, Robert the Bruce granted the lands of Sauchie to the de Annan family but these passed by marriage to Sir James Schaw of Greenock who built the old tower sometime between 1430 & 1440. The Schaw family was very influential and in c1460 Sir James’ son became Governor of Stirling Castle. Sauchie Tower is a four storey, 15th-century tower, square in plan. The tower had a courtyard enclosing later buildings, but these were demolished in the 1930s. The third image shows an Artist’s impression of Sauchie Tower as it might have looked c1500 (Drawing by Dave Pollock at Archaeografix). According to Clackmannanshire Council, The Friends of Sauchie Tower was established to support the restoration. In 2004 the group was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to carry out the project entitled Sauchie Tower and its Environs. The main aims of the project are to raise awareness of the tower and its environment; increase community knowledge and understanding of the area and encourage people to protect the tower, support its restoration and enjoy the restored site. At the moment Sauchie Tower is only open for special guided tours during Scottish Archaeology Month and Doors Open Days each year in September. Keep an eye on the page as we continue the Tower Trail throughout the month of April. www.menstriecastlestay.co.uk www.clacks.gov.uk/document/1119.pdf #menstrie #castle #towertrail #clackmannanshire #nationaltrust #scotland #discoverclacks #sauchie #sauchietower #alloa #castlecampbell, #dollar #clackmannan #history #NTS #ClackmannanshireHeritageTrust

Sauchie Tower. . Also known as Devon Tower, is a 15th-century tower house in Clackmannanshire, Scotland. The tower is located by the village of Fishcross. . The lands of Sauchie were granted by King Robert the Bruce to Henri de Annand, Sheriff of Clackmannan, in 1321. . In 1431 Sir James Schaw of Greenock, Comptroller to the King, acquired the lands of Sauchie when he married the heiress Mary de Annand. Sauchie Tower was built by Sir James soon after. . Around 1752 the tower is thought to have been gutted by fire, and was not subsequently lived in. The roof and turrets were destroyed in the second half of the nineteenth century. The tower was derelict but in good condition in 1950. . Sauchie Tower is a 15th century tower house belonging to the Schaw family which may have stood on the site of an earlier castle. . Around 1930 the site was bought by the Coal Board, who operated a colliery to the north, and soon after Old Sauchie House was largely demolished. . Sauchie Tower was bought in 1982 by Robert Heath and Alexander Mair with the intention of restoring it for use as a dwelling. In November 1984 and March 1985 an archaeological excavation was carried out to learn more about the tower, concentrating on the basement levels and the first floor with some limited investigation of features within the courtyard. . The Friends of Sauchie Tower was set up in 2002 to try to protect the tower from further decline, learn more about its history, and restore it. In 2005 a community excavation led by Addyman Associates was undertaken involving the Friends of Sauchie Tower and funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Clackmannanshire Heritage Trust. . #SauchieTower #castle #ScottishCastles #CastlesOfScotland #loves_united_castle #manor_n_castle #castles_oftheworld #castles_world #замок #ChateauFort #burg #castillo #castello #history #InstaScotland #insta_scotland #IgersScots #ig_scotland #ScotSpirit #loves_scotland #OutAndAboutScotland #scotland_greatshots #ScotlandLover #OSMaps #WonderlustScotland #ScottishRoamers #VisualsOfScotland #UnlimitedScotland #ScotlandShots #ScotlandIsNow

Sauchie Tower is a 15th century tower house belonging to the Schaw family which may have stood on the site of an earlier castle. . The lands of Sauchie were granted by Robert the Bruce to Henri de Annand, Sheriff of Clackmannan, in 1321 but whether or not a castle was built at this time is unclear. Almost a century later Sauchie passed to Sir James Schaw of Greenock, Comptroller of the King's Works for James III, when he married Mary de Annand in 1431. Sir James is thought to have built Sauchie Tower soon after. . The tower is situated on slightly raised ground on what would have been the marshy flood plain of the River Devon to the north. The north side of the site was built up to form an artificial terrace while the west side was defended by a ditch running approximately north to south and the topography suggests that there may also have been a ditch along the south edge of the site. . The tower consists of four main storeys and a garret and measures around 11.5m by 10.3m. The north, east and south walls vary in thickness between 1.6m and 2.0m while the west wall is over 3.0m thick and contains intramural chambers. . The tower was once surrounded by a courtyard wall, thought to also date to the early 15th century, a section of which can still be seen to the north. A range of buildings was built east to west along the inside of the north wall, with a chamber, great hall, kitchen and probable bakehouse. The original entrance to the cobbled courtyard is thought to have been in the west wall. . The chamber at the west end of this hall range and the north-west corner tower were later incorporated into a two storey mansion house which was built against the inside of the courtyard wall by Alexander Schaw in 1631. . #SauchieTower #castle #ScottishCastles #CastlesOfScotland #loves_united_castle #manor_n_castle #castles_oftheworld #castles_world #замок #ChateauFort #burg #castillo #castello #history #InstaScotland #insta_scotland #IgersScots #ig_scotland #ScotSpirit #loves_scotland #OutAndAboutScotland #scotland_greatshots #ScotlandLover #OSMaps #WonderlustScotland #ScottishRoamers #VisualsOfScotland #UnlimitedScotland #ScotlandShots #ScotlandIsNow
