Machu Picchu, named a World Heritage Site in 1983 and one of the New Seven Wonders of the world in 2007. Impressions Todays offering features a portrait of Mary taken from the Madonna del Parto, a fresco painted in 1455 by Piero della Francesca. To me it has a sort of ethereal quality, both solid and transparent at the same time. Possibly because its a fresco - the paint would be applied to fresh plaster and from the little I know about the artform I think it is allegedly one of the technically most difficult forms of painting as there is no second chance on the drying plaster so mistakes are always visible and if the plaster mixture is wrong then the whole thing may break or slide from the wall. So there is a sense of danger and precariousness about it. There would be no room for nerves or indecision for the artist painting a fresco. So when I saw this 2024 RTW outfit by Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent it struck a chord somehow seeing as it is predominantly made from the sheer net fabric that is usually used for tights. Another unforgiving, technically difficult material that shows every fault, or even perhaps every action or interaction. I usually ladder them putting them on so this outfit would be useless to me! Anyway looking at the sheerness of it also made me think that here is an outfit that can only be worn by the most confident of people. Again like the fresco no room for nerves or indecision. Its an outfit I guess you have to commit to. Maybe this is why they seem to go together? Or maybe its just the ethereal aesthetics? Maybe a bit of both? The armband, which is a symbol of a challenge to duel with anyone who shows enough courage to touch it. And @claryaldringen accepted this challenge. I would like to pay tribute to the brilliance of the entire concept, which is based on the story of real knights from the 15th century. A very interesting piece present in the collection of the @museodelbargello , in Florence. The classic sleeveless shape from the late 15th century, with that longer part at the front and the higher, denser collar. But the real peculiarity 🤩 are the riveted rings, which every single one have a punched symbol on the back of the overlap (which therefore covers the back of the rivet). To my eyes it looks like a crown or something similar. There is probably information about it, here and there on the internet or in the archives, if anyone has the opportunity to share it, they are welcome… would be interesting to know if that symbol is just a producer mark, or if it is a distinctive sign of the client, perhaps a duke or prince. 🤔 This also shows us how the production of these rings (like almost all mail armor) was made using methods and tools that allowed “mass production processes”. Also based on personal experience, using tools with special modifications and consecutive production processes, makes it way more easier and faster to create rings that are as identical as possible to each other, limiting the errors and “failures” deriving from “hand free” crafting. So we’re able to see the same works in different places. Background: We’ll make your Sunday more pleasant with a real Hans Holbein the Elder! The panel painting on fir wood dates from 1490 and iconographically depicts the burial of St Afra. The panel was once part of an altarpiece dedicated to the patron saint of Augsburg, which suggests that it was made for an Augsburg church. However, more recent research suggests that it was originally placed in the church of St Afra-in-Felde near Friedberg or in the mortuary dedicated to St Afra in the Eichstätt bishop’s palace. What is certain is that this is one of the artist’s earliest works. Nevertheless, it was reproduced by the Westphalian engraver Israhel van Meckenem and spread as a motif far beyond Augsburg. Foreground: Colourful veils, wild hats and devout altar boys. What looks so normal at first glance turns out to be an exciting potpourri of outfits that we shouldn’t adopt for our hobby, as coloured veils are absolutely not the norm, and the same applies to dresses that fasten with buttons. These are very rarely seen. What is more common in the upper Rhine region, are overdresses such as those on the front left or with short sleeves with fringes. However, the latter are more likely to be seen on saints and not in secular surroundings. The men in the background are dressed in a more everyday style: “Röcke” with slightly wider collars, once even with a slit on the sleeve to slip out. Since Lucrezia and the other sister Maria don't appear in the series, I thought I would make my own fancast of her. • • Lucrezia de' Medici was born in Florence on 14 February 1448, the second daughter of Piero di Cosimo de' Medici and Lucrezia Tornabuoni. She was nicknamed Nannina, which had been the nickname of her great-grandmother Piccarda Bueri. She received a cultured and refined education. In 1461, at the age of about 13, she was married to Bernardo Rucellai. Nannina was brought to her husband's house five years later, on 8 June 1466. The couple had five children, Cosimo, Piero, Palla, Giovanni and Lucrezia. Pillar-biter on the far right of the choir screen of the St. Bavo church in Haarlem (Author: @Bananadine) The pillar-biter theme is not very frequent in art and can only be found in a few other places. There is one on the choir stalls of the church of St Martin in Venlo (late fifteenth century), shown frontally, just as the man is about to set his teeth into the column. Another example occurs on a misericord of the stalls in the church of St Catharine in Hoogstraten (1532-46). Here, a monk is shown kneeling in front of a wooden building from which a woman looks out, hugging a column suspended in the air and either biting, licking or kissing it. He too has a rosary suspended from his belt. In this particular instance, the image is intended to bring out the hypocrisy of the clergy. The column here could well carry phallic connotations. Parmi ses nombreux titres, Charles le Téméraire était comte de Hainaut, bien qu'il ne se soit rendu que deux fois à Ath durant sa vie. Nous nous tournons désormais vers notre prochaine sortie, ce sera à Corroy-le-Château, un campement que nous n'avons jamais manqué depuis la création de la compagnie! 🇬🇧 Yesterday, we visited Ath as part of the Burbant Tower festivities. Although this was not a re-enactment event per se, it was an initiative by the city of Ath to showcase the Burbant Tower, the last vestige of the castle of the Counts of Hainaut. I cover the faces in different ways, but I do not add anything from the outside to the paintings. The Hidden Portraits are a contemporary view of art history, of paintings as part of representation. Finally prepared some papers for silverpoint drawing with bone pigment, I used one of the papers for some exercises from the study sheets from @therenaissanceworkshop it’s a bit more grey than I would have liked but I think that’s because I used fresh chicken bones instead of bleaching them for a period in the sun. After yesterday's tour, I returned to my favourite Berlin museum, the Gallery of Old Masters ("Gemaelde-Galerie"), this time concentrating on the German Galleries, mainly 14th and 15th century. There is so much to take in, I find that focusing on just one department per visit is the best way not to be overwhelmed and be able to truly appreciate these incredible works of art in detail. I'm especially fond of the Konrad Witz painting. Witz was a 15th century master who, incidentally, was born in the same town down south as I was. : These days I discovered a beautiful path that winds along the nearby river and leads through enchanted-looking patches of woodland. Gorse is growing everywhere at the moment, delighting my artist's soul with its vibrant yellow colour ... and of course giving me quite a few ideas. Gorse makes a wonderful dye. I think as soon as we get back home, I will look out for gorse and try dyeing with it. ... In the meantime, however, I'm going to savour the wonderful scent of gorse to the full🥰 ... and ... needless to say ... the cushions of spring-soft grass and fresh chickweed underneath my feet 😍... Habe dieser Tage einen wunderschönen Weg entdeckt der sich am nahegelegenen Fluss entlang schlängelt und immer wieder durch verwunschen wirkende, kleine Waldstücke führt. Überall wächst zur Zeit Ginster, der mit seiner kräftigen gelben Farbe meine Künstlerseele erfreut ... und mir natürlich wieder so einige Ideen beschert. Aus Ginsterlässt sich eine herrliche Färbefarbe herstellen. Ich denke, sobald wir wieder nach Hause zurückgekehrt sind, werde ich einmal nach Färberginster Ausschau halten und probieren damit zu färben. ...
