Dunkeld and Birnam walks are full of wee trails leading through some of the best areas of the Perthshire forest. The woods are alive with the sounds of different species of bird, Like this little Tree Creeper for example. I’ve always wanted to photograph one of these wee birds since I seen them at the caravan. I’m glad I did because he/she even took a moment to pause for their picture 🥳. Remember to always respect wildlife and their habitat when photographing them, Always maintain a safe distance so never to frighten or spook them. Some facts about the Tree Creeper: 1. The treecreeper has many regional names: the Somerset name, tree mouse, is perhaps most appropriate, as this bird does creep up trees in a mouse-like manner. 2. Treecreepers always go up trees, never down. When they get to the top they fly to the bottom of the next tree. 3. They are almost entirely insectivorous, with spiders and other small insects forming the bulk of their diet. In winter they make take some small seeds. 4. I keep thinking my winter work has finished 🤔! Well, it wasn't really winter today, just a beautiful and at times changeable spring day in the Cairngorms, with plenty of fresh snow overlying the older firm snow in places, and everything from hail showers and mist to blue sky and sunshine! Classic Scottish weather. It was a pleasure to meet Dafydd today - we have been "social media buddies" for a while, keeping up with each other's adventures, but today we finally managed some hill time together. Dafydd is already a competent navigator but is keen to push his skills up a notch. The Cairngorm Plateau is the perfect place to hone such skills and we spent a full day hopping around various points with lots of top tips and handy hints along the way. Next door to the Carnegie’s cottage in Cresson, one will note a rather more elaborate and ornate house known as Jones Cottage. It was likely here in this house that Andrew Carnegie’s mother passed away while on holiday. “As it goes, the story of the day Mrs. Carnegie died begins with Andrew sick in an upstairs middle bedroom and his mother in an adjacent room. Andrew’s condition was such at the time that when his mother passed, doctors felt it would be detrimental if he knew his mother had died. Her body couldn’t be carried out through the house without his notice, so they took the casket out a window and lowered it to a carriage, which sent Mrs. Carnegie to a train and eventually to Pittsburgh. Looking at the small cottage owned by Carnegie, it doesn’t seem this story would be possible. While the upstairs of this cottage appears may have three bedrooms, the second floor doesn’t have ceilings of full height. Moreover, the second-story windows don’t seem large enough to allow a casket to be moved through them. This information is only conjecture, but on following up with another call to Charlie Miller in Cresson, I was told Carnegie biographer Joseph Frazier Wall had visited Cresson and confirmed that Margaret Carnegie was indeed in Jones Cottage when she died. " As for the Jones Cottage: “B.F. Jones was the Chairman of the Republican National Committee who co-founded the Jones & Laughlin Steel Company at Pittsburgh - the only other steel company capable of rivaling the Carnegie Steel Co. In the summer, Mr and Mrs Jones would take their private rail car “Cleopatra” to Cresson where they spent $18,000 building their eclectic 14-room summer “cottage”. Their son, Benjamin Franklin Jones Jr. (1863-1928) lived at the B.F. Jones House at Pittsburgh. Various rumors exist as to the notable guests who stayed at the Jones cottage over the years: Two are ruled out by dates, being Presidents Andrew Jackson and James Buchanan; one by geography, being the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson; and, though “America’s Agatha Christie” Mary Rinehart Roberts might have visited Cresson, there’s nothing to say she stayed at the house.”
