What a nice surprise has been "GUNS AT BATASI" (John Guillermin, 1964) Good film with a great performance by Richard Attenborough, and what a supreme (and unknown) example of classic black & white CinemaScope cinematography by Douglas Slocombe. Very high contrast and stark images, interiors lit for deep stops, and backlit night exteriors on stage, to simulate remote locations in Africa. The whole film was filmed in Pinewood in England. But the best part for me has been the single camera work, operated by Gerry Fisher (who went on to be a great DP himself), using long tracks with pans, lots of push-ins, low-angles and the whole frame to compose WIDE with lots of characters carefully positioned even with the camera movement. Attenborough won the BAFTA; Slocombe and the production design were nominated for the award. Guillermin and Slocombe would reunite two years later in another classic, "THE BLUE MAX" (1966), in Franscope & color, a film with excellent framing as well and great aerials by Skeets Kelly.
