Spring nettle is here 🌱 featuring a curious kitty Stinging nettle grows like a "weed" in my garden, so I might as well find a way to work with this resilient, and often painful, plant. If you like spinach, stinging nettle is very similar, giving a more floral-earthy flavor. 🍵I personally like it as a base for herbal tea blends, as it adds extra vitamins and minerals including calcium, vitamins A and K! If consumed as cooked greens, it provides additional nutrients, such as vitamin C, iron, magnesium, and more. As much as I've been stung by these suckers, they're one of my favorites to forage as they're easy to identify and are crazy versatile. #stingingnettles #sustainableliving #herbalteas #easternteaberry

Gaultheria procumbens. It's a small yet beautiful plant that belongs to the Ericaceae family. This plant is also commonly known as "Eastern Teaberry". One of the most striking features of this plant is its bright red fruit, which can easily catch anyone's attention during this time of the year. Native to the Northeast America. It is a rhizomotous shrub #gaultheriaprocumbens #easternteaberry #ericaceae #botany

In their native habitat, wintergreen plants grow in the dappled shade of temperate forests, where they creep along and form dense colonies among other acid-loving plants like mountain laurels and rhododendrons. The plants are shade-tolerant and may even grow in dense shade but will produce few or no flowers. Bright filtered sunlight will keep plants from scorching while giving them enough energy to produce blossoms and fruit. Consistent moisture is important to the health of wintergreen. The more sunlight your plants receive, the more moisture they will require. In dry spells and droughts, give them one inch of water per week. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Native plants such as wintergreen are primed to grow without any special care, provided you have the environment they need to thrive. Plant wintergreen in the early spring. Plant it in a location with partial shade and well-drained, acidic soil. Water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist. Instead of adding fertilizer, spread leaf mold around the plants. Prune out old, woody stems in the spring to make room for new growth. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

In addition to the species Gaultheria procumbens, several cultivars have been introduced, varying in fall foliage color, berry size and color, height and spread, as well as hardiness. The image is ‘Winter Splash’ ‘Winter Splash’ has variegated green foliage with white edges that acquire a pink flush in the winter. The 12-inch plant blooms in late spring to late summer and produces bright red berries in the fall. Zone 3-8 ‘Cherry Berries’ has dense, glossy green foliage that changes to a deep red in the winter. The white flowers in the summer turn into large red, ornamental berries in the fall that persist on the plant. It forms a mat 10 inches tall and 24 to 36 inches wide. Zone 3-8. ‘Redwood’ is a creeping wintergreen whose foliage also turns a deep red as temperatures drop. In late spring, pink flowers appear on the plant. With a height of only 4 to 6 inches, this is a low-growing variety that spreads 12 to 36 inches. Zone 3-8. ‘Winter Fiesta', also identified by the cultivar name ‘Hokutotakaji-001) is an introduction from Japan whose special attraction is its large white berries that turn cotton candy pink in the winter. It has a compact growth habit, reaching only 4 to 6 inches in height and spreading 12 to 36 inches. Zone 4-9. ‘Berry Cascade’ is different from other wintergreen plants by the cascading way the berries grow all along the stem, making it look like a string of pearls. The other outstanding feature is that the berries ripen in waves from late summer through late winter in areas with mild winters. The winter foliage colors are bright orange and red on a plant that reaches 6 inches in height. The fruits of Gaultheria procumbens, considered its actual "teaberries", are edible, with a taste of mildly sweet wintergreen similar to Mentha piperita (peppermint) and Mentha spicata (spearmint) even though Gaultheria procumbens is not a true mint. The leaves and branches make a fine herbal tea, through normal drying and infusion process. For the leaves to yield significant amounts of their essential oil, they need to be fermented for at least three days. The berries and leaves contain methyl salicylate, a compound that is closely related to aspirin.Teaberry extract can be used to flavor tea, candy, medicine and chewing gum. Teaberry is also a flavor of ice cream in regions where the plant grows. It likewise inspired the name of Clark's Teaberry chewing gum. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Wintergreen is not taken in large quantities by any species of wildlife, but the regularity of its use enhances its importance. Its fruit persists through the winter, and it is one of the few sources of green leaves in winter. White-tailed deer browse wintergreen throughout its range, and in some localities it is an important winter food. Other animals that eat wintergreen are wild turkey, sharp-tailed grouse, northern bobwhite, ring-necked pheasant, black bear, white-footed mouse, and red fox. Wintergreen is a favorite food of the eastern chipmunk, and the leaves are a minor winter food of the gray squirrel in Virginia. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Gaultheria procumbens, also called the eastern teaberry, the checkerberry, the boxberry, or the American wintergreen, is a species of Gaultheria native to northeastern North America from Newfoundland west to southeastern Manitoba, and south to Alabama. It is a member of the Ericaceae (heath family) along with blueberries. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Gaultheria procumbens is a 6 inch tall groundcover, so a champion post doesn’t really work. Well, even though they dont grow into champion trees, we still need more Wintergreen in our woods. The berries of this native groundcover brighten up winter landscapes which we all need in Ohio. Wintergreen plants spread by creeping rhizomes and, as such, are easy to propagate with rooted stems. This method is preferable over propagation from seed, which in addition to being much lengthier has the added challenge of the seeds being tiny and requiring up to 10 weeks of cold stratification. Here’s how to propagate wintergreen from a rooted stem: Select a strong, healthy stem that creeps across the ground. Carefully dig up the stem with all its roots attached. If there are only a few roots present, dust the bottom with rooting hormone Plant the stem in a 4-inch pot filled with damp potting mix. Make sure the roots are fully covered with soil. Place the pot in an outdoor location away from direct sunlight and keep it evenly moist. When new growth appears and the stem does not wiggle when you gently tug on it, it has rooted. Wait a few more weeks to let it grow some more, then replant it in the landscape or in a larger pot. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Gaultheria procumbens spreads by means of long rhizomes, which are within the top 3⁄4–11⁄4 in of soil. Because of the shallow nature of the rhizomes, it does not survive most forest fires, but a brief or mild fire may leave rhizomes intact, from which the plant can regrow even if the above-ground shrub was consumed. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Gaultheria procumbens fruit is a bright red to purplish berry-like capsule, ¼ to 1/3 in diameter, that has a strong flavor of wintergreen and often persists through the winter, unless eaten and dispersed by an animal. It is an epigynous berry, with the majority of the flesh of the fruit being composed of the fleshy calyx. The plant is a calcifuge, favoring acidic soil, in pine or hardwood forests, although it generally produces fruit only in sunnier areas. It often grows as part of the heath complex in an oak–heath forest. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Single flowers hanging on smooth stalks are borne in the leaf axils at the end of a branch. Flowers are the classic nodding urn-shape of the heath family, ¼ to 1/3 inch long, the 5 white petals fused with the tips curled tightly back from the restricted opening. The calyx holding the flower is also white, the lobes oval, around 1/16 inch long and slightly hairy. The flower stalk is also slightly hairy and about same length as the flower. The anthers are forked somewhat like a snake's tongue, with two awns at the tip. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Wintergreen leaves are evergreen, alternate, with 3 to 5 leaves at the ends of the slender branches. The leaf size is ¾ to 1¾ inches long, 1/3 to 1 inch wide, oval to somewhat paddle-shaped, a pointed, rounded or blunt tip, tapering at the base to a short stalk. Leaves are very shiny on the upper surface, sparsely hairy, with fine teeth widely spaced around the edges, a fine spine-like hair at the tip of a tooth with a distinct oil of wintergreen scent. #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily #AmericanMountainTea #CanadaTea #Canterberry #Checkerberry #CreepingWintergreen #Gingerberry #Greenberry #GroundBerry #Teaberry

Today I took a twig identification quiz and I did great on the trees, but not so well on the shrubs - so I decided to cover a new-to-me woody plant this week called Gaultheria procumbens or American Wintergreen. If it is new to you too - comment below (make me feel better) OR if you know Wintergreen, please share your tips on learning it. It is native to Ohio, but in most of the woods around here the invasive honeysuckle wipes out everything in the understory. I’m on the hunt! #Wintergreen #AmericanWintergreen #Gaultheriaprocumbens #Boxberry #EasternTeaberry #Checkerberry #OhioTreeID #TreeIdentification #OhioUrbanForestry #urbanforest #ODNRForestry #exploreohio #TreeID #Native #Ericaceae #HeathFamily

The American Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) is an edible for human consumption plant that holds strong during winter months, even when things are not as warm as they are now. It was commonly used to make a tea from the leaves, which is why it is also known as the Eastern Teaberry, but beware of steeping the leaves in boiling water as the oil can be toxic in high doses so it is recommended that you steep the leaves overnight or ferment them for a few days, strain them and then heat the water afterwards. The oil that can be derived from the leaves is also used commercially in gum and toothpaste and the historical uses were comparable to aspirin because of the methyl salicylate that it contains, which is why consuming too much can be dangerous. As always, proceed with caution when experimenting with foraged foods. The berries are also edible and can be made into jam, eaten freshly or dried like a raisin. I prefer to simply photograph them and leave them for the wildlife that will rely on them over these winter months like deer, mice, black bears or several species of bird. Even though the temperatures are warm, the plants are still hibernating so what is currently available will be important to maintaining their life cycles. 💚🌿❄️💙 #americanwintergreen #easternteaberry #gaultheriaprocumbens #nativeplants #botany #foraging #edibleplants #governorearlpeshtigoriverstateforest #peshtigoriver #wiscohiker #hikeswithfriends #crivitz #wisconsin

Wintergreens are some of my favorite finds!✨🤗 These mint-flavored berries are incredibly delicious and now is the perfect time to harvest them! Prolonged, hard frost only invigorates the wintergreen flavor, reducing lingering bitterness and bringing out the cool, creamy texture of the red berry's flesh. The fruit is at its finest freshly picked and eaten raw, but its flavor can be strong and only one or two berries is plenty to cleanse the palate. An instant breath freshener!! 💨❄️🌱❤️ #gaultheriaprocumbens #gaultheria #wintergreen #snowberry #boxberry #checkerberry #easternteaberry #foraging #foragingforfood

Eastern teaberry (Gaultheria procumbens) is more than just a sweet native groundcover: it also has a long history of medicinal use. Also known as wintergreen and lion's tongue, this member of the heath family (like blueberries and rhododendrons) has high levels of salicylates, the active ingredient in aspirin. Its fruits are edible — they're a traditional food of the Cherokee (along with making a tea from the leaves for colds and stomach aches). In the African American herbal tradition, infusions of eastern teaberry have been used to treat digestive issues, arthritis, headaches, and more. It has even been used on livestock: in researching African American healing traditions for her book Working the Roots, Michele E. Lee interviewed Nathaniel Bears, a farmer in Scotland County, NC born around 1905. He told how they "used to feed lion's tongue to the hogs to help keep them healthy. We chop up the leaves and put it in the feed." Here at the Garden, you'll find eastern teaberry growing happily in a pot in our Courtyard Gardens. . . . . . #easternteaberry #wintergreen #lionstongue #teaberry #gaultheria #gaultheriaprocumbens #medicinalplants #nativeplants #nativeplantgarden #garden #gardener #gardening #botanicalgarden #conservationgarden #unc #chapelhill #uncchapelhill #northcarolina #ncbg #ncbotanicalgarden

Happy Wildflower Wednesday! This week’s plant is a little one that goes by many names: wintergreen, eastern teaberry, checkerberry, and boxberry are all common names for Gaultheria procumbens. The shiny green leaves and bright red berries of this low-growing plant are easy to spot when other vegetation is dormant. The white teaberry flowers are the classic urn-shaped pendant flowers characteristic of the blueberry family (Ericaceae). Fertilized flowers develop into bright red berries that persist through the winter. One of the most notable things about teaberry is the intense menthol or minty scent of the crushed leaves and berries. In fact, the berries are quite edible and the flavor is amazing! This is due, at least in part, to the volatile chemical methyl salicylate. Methyl salicylate is chemically related to salicylic acid – which you may recognize from aspirin. Teaberry has been used to flavor gum, candy, ice cream, and (not surprisingly given the common name) tea. Since the leaves are green all winter (hence the name wintergreen) and the berries are present from the fall through most of the winter, teaberry is an important food for many species of wildlife as it is available when other plants have withered away. Deer eat the leaves and many birds forage for the berries. This short little shrub (shrublet?) is common in dry to moist forests with acidic soils throughout WI where the plants spread via shallow underground stems (rhizomes). The next time you come across this plant, crush a leaf and enjoy the aroma! If there are berries, treat yourself to one or two but make sure to leave some for the wildlife! #wisconsin #wisconsinflora #wisconsinplants #nativeplants #plants #botany #methylsalicylate #wildflowerwednesday #WildflowerWednesday #wildflowers #wintergreen #easternteaberry #ericaceae #gaultheria #gaultheriaprocumbens #teaberry #checkerberry

The fruit of American Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) - also known as Eastern Teaberry, Checkerberry (a name they share with another interesting edible, Sorbus torminalis) and Boxberry - have a unique, slightly sweet (sweeter after a frost), slightly medicinal (but oddly in a nice way) flavour, and a pleasant mealy texture. The leaves have a similar, but stronger flavour, that is used to flavour some chewing gums in the US, and can also be used to make a herbal tea. The species is native to North America, were it has a long history of use for food and medicine by the Algonquin, Cherokee, Haudenosaunee, Ojibwe and other indigenous peoples. The Ojibwe name is Wiinisiibag. Although it hails from across the Atlantic, it is grown as an ornamental over here, and can often be found in garden centres. #wintergreen #checkerberry #teaberry #easternteaberry #boxberry #gaultheriaprocumbens #ediblegroundcover #forestgarden #forestgardenplants #edimental #shadetolerant #wiinisiibag #ethnobotany #ethnobotanicals

Hiding under the old leaves is the wonderful wintergreen. I remember finding these berries with thick glossy leaves when I was a little kid. I asked my mom what it was and she told me the name. Something about that word, the combination of Winter with the colour green, and that moment of sun combined with cold made a memory that has stayed fresh in my mind all these years. #wintergreen #easternteaberry #checkerberry #boxberry #canadatea #grouseberry #hillbery #gingerberry #groundberry #canterberry #redpollom #chickenberry #spiceberry #gaultheriaprocumbens #laketrail #childhoodmemories #oneberry #marchwoods #latewinter #awalkinthewoods #itsstillwinter #springintheair #earlymarch #sunnymarchday #landscape #landscapephotography #nature #naturephotography #marchinnewengland #connecticutnature

🍃Wintergreen🍃. A year-round trail pal here in Maine. 🌲 The wind was quit invigorating enough today but a sniff or a chew on this while out amongst the trees can always give you a little uplifting and rejuvenation. Characterized by their ground-creeping nature, shiny extremely dark leaves, and unmistakable scent that will send you into a nostalgic scent memory of your favorite gum, or that one 🦷 toothpaste mom bought, or maybe that one teacher who always smelled like chewing gum and hairspray 🤷🏻‍♀️. Just me? The wintergreen berries are said to taste best especially in the winter months after some hard frost; I have yet to try the wintergreen (eastern teaberry/box berry/ checkerberry) berry, but I hear it’s delightful 🤌🏼🍃 #maine #hiking #foraging #winterforaging #wintergreen #easternteaberry #boxberry #checkerberry

American Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens) 🌿 Native to the Northeastern United States and throughout Canada 🌿 Also known as Eastern Teaberry, Native Americans used to brew a tea from the leaves to help with various aches and pains 🌿 A groundcover species that prefers a moist, acidic, woodland type soil 🌿 I have been desperately looking to add American Wintergreen to my native gardens for years but unable to find a local source for it! Luckily enough, I was out with my friend and fellow horticulturist @kylezachary_ at Straiders Garden Center last weekend and happened to find a lush display available for purchase. 38’F doesn’t seem like ideal planting time, but I was thankful to get it into the ground while it hasn’t frozen and we are coming to some warm weather the next week so timing couldn’t be better. I hope it establishes itself readily so I can propagate and spread throughout several of my native gardens. . . . . . #groundcover #easternteaberry #american #wintergreen #americanwintergreen #gaultheria #berries #drupes #fruit #fallcolors #wintercolors #winterphotography #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #wildlifegarden #foraging #medicinalplants #medicinal #native #nativeplantsofnorthamerica #plants #plantsofinstagram #fruits #redleaves #redfruits #plantnatives #ignature #ignaturecapture #perennial

Meet Gaultheria procumbens, aka Wintergreen or the Eastern Teaberry! 🌱☕️ Eastern "teaberries", are edible, with a taste of mildly sweet wintergreen similar to the flavors peppermint and spearmint, even though G. procumbens is not a true mint. The leaves and branches make a fine herbal tea, through normal drying and infusion process. The berries and leaves contain methyl salicylate, a compound that is closely related to aspirin. Teaberry extract can be used to flavor tea, candy, medicine and chewing gum. Teaberry is also a flavor of ice cream in regions where the plant grows. It likewise inspired the name of Clark's Teaberry chewing gum. Have you tried it? ✨🌱❤️ #gaultheriaprocumbens #wintergreen #easternteaberry #teaberry #checkerberry #clarksteaberrygum #mecicinalplants #herbaltea #nature #naturephotography #naturelover #natureshot #nature_perfection #nature_brilliance #forest #forestfinds #forestfloor #foraging #foragingforfood #foresttreasures
