A Murder at the End of the World was written, executive-produced and directed by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij in their second television production following the cancelled Netflix series, ‘THE OA.’ Inspired by their interests in stories about amateur sleuths and young female detectives. Darby Hart (Emma Corrin) is the amalgamation of an amateur detective and a novel writer who is invited on a private retreat with eight other ambitious minds. By one of the wealthiest men in the world, Andy Ronson (Clive Owen) in hopes of collaborating and creating a better future for the population. But the getaway turns out to be the last location anyone would like to be in when one of the guests is murdered. Darby Hart uses the skills she knows best towards uncovering the truth and apprehending the suspect before they can prey on their next victim in this well rounded, whodunit. With her backstory revealed through a series of flashbacks that surround an unsolved case and a burgeoning romance between her former lover, Bill. These events play an integral part on how she came to be. Emma Corrin is admirable in the leading role. Reminiscent of a young Lizbeth Salander from ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ film series. The show is a slow-burn that demands patience from the audience as we dissect each of the guests. Some of the creative decisions are questionable and require a level of suspension of disbelief. But it doesn’t completely break our immersion as we are invested in Darby Hart’s pursuit. However, when we reach the finale the reveal is bound to divide fans of the mini-series. I was personally disappointed with the outcome that we received because the deaths now feel coincidental rather than personal. The intensity behind the motivation of the murders is diminished and the case is closed on an unsatisfactory note. A missed opportunity. A Murder at the End of the World - [8/10]

Thank you to @PRHAudio 🎧 for the complimentary audiobook and @randomhouse for the complimentary hardcover! The Puzzle Master by Danielle Trussoni I enjoyed this one! I love a good puzzle as much as the next guy, but Mike Brink is a savant in the realm of puzzles, and this story is a doozy of one. Quite a few things are going on, so the reader needs to pay close attention to keep track of all the threads in this story. I liked the various twists and turns worked into the plot that kept me guessing, and I couldn’t wait to see how everything would come together before this story drew to a close. Mike Brink’s life changed on a football field when a brain injury left him with acquired savant syndrome. He loves puzzles and can’t resist the one involving a woman serving time for murder. The mystery at the center of this story is pretty complex and takes more than one unexpected turn. Mike was a great character, and I couldn’t wait to see him figure out what was happening. I listened to the audiobook and thought that Edoardo Ballerini did a wonderful job with the story. I believe that this may have been the first time that I have listened to this narrator’s work, and I must say that I was impressed. He did a great job of bringing Mike Brink and the rest of the characters in this story to life. I found his voice to be very pleasant and had no problems listening to this audiobook for hours at a time. I am certain that his performance added to my overall enjoyment of this story. I would recommend this book to others. I was completely entertained by this intelligent and action-packed story that left me questioning everything at times. A Murder at the End of the World - ★★½ (2023) The first episode of this miniseries succeeds in piquing your interest, but everything else struggle to get off the ground and falls completely flat. What's most paradoxical about A Murder at the End of the World is its ambition as a miniseries aiming for mystery, intrigue, and complexity, yet its blend fails to generate momentum. None of the episodes manage to be particularly thrilling or exceptionally tense. There's a noticeable imbalance between the flashbacks, dedicated to developing Emma Corrin's character with a focus on drama, and the present-day narrative, more inclined towards exploring suspense and enigma. However, neither front seamlessly integrates, and as previously mentioned, there's a persistent sense of detachment from both the characters and the storyline. It's not that the production is inherently flawed, but an enduring barrier of coldness exists within both the cast and the plot, and consequently I never felt genuinely interested nor invested on the whole ordeal and resolution. Book #24 for 2023: The sixth chapter in Robert R. McCammon’s Matthew Corbett series, picking up from a cliffhanger finale and wrapping up with another cliffhanger. It makes it a little hard to recommend as a casual read since it can’t stand alone without the entire series, which if fine because I do recommend the entire series, which started as a turn of the 18th century legal thriller and has evolved into a tremendously entertaining blend of James Bond and Sherlock Holmes in the early 1700s. And while I love McCammon’s writing and still buy the books, since the third installment, I’ve listened to them on Audible because I can’t even imagine these characters without Edoardo Ballerini stellar narration. #whatglassersread #robertrmccammon #matthewcorbett #edoardoballerini #audible

Review of Episode 1 and 2: Episode one set the tone for the series… it started slow but in the end of episode one nag-simula na ang climax… Darby Hart played by Emma Corrin they say she is Sherlock Holmes of the series but to me I see her as Hercule Poirot, I love Emma Corrin’s portrayal of Darby, she is a good actress. The excitement of the series started at episode two because dito pinakita kung paano nag-start si Darby na hilig sa investigating lalo na ng mga murder. The genre of the series is murder mystery and psychological thriller at dito sa two episodes ay mukhang doon na nga papunta. When I first started working on Mind Burn, the idea of a Personal Brain Assistant, or PBA (a brain-mounted computer) was just that. An idea. And yet a year after I started working on Mind Burn, a corporation called Neuralink announced it was researching a brain-implanted computer. Imagine my concern! As work on the book continued, reality continued to stubbornly chase down my fiction. Another concept I included were VIs (Virtual Intelligences) that weren’t self-aware, just advanced programs that could understand human speech and give answers or take actions. Yet in the past few years we’ve seen virtual assistants like Chat-GPT arise that can understand humans and give remarkably human-sounding answers, and art interfaces like Midjourney that can create fantastic images in seconds. At this point, I’m glad I didn’t write about an EMP going off or self-replicating drones taking over the skies! My co-author Rhett Bruno and I are no prophets, and we hesitate to call the future Mind Burn presents a dystopia. It’s not that, not entirely. It’s simply a world a few decades ahead of ours where technology continues to advance at a frightening pace, offering us the opportunity to save lives (with advanced weather monitoring systems) and end them (with armed drones). In the end, it’s never the technology we create that chooses whether to help or harm us. It’s how we, as humanity, choose to use it. As you dive into our near-future world of brain-computer crimes and the cops tasked to solve them, I hope you’ll enjoy the thrills and mysteries while considering a single question... how much liberty would you surrender to know you would be safe?
