Wonderful evening at Charterhouse on Monday- we were treated royally by Jess and Peter with drinks in the Masters house followed by a private tour. Well worth a visit. Dating back to the 1300’s, it was a Carthusian monastery- a plague pit, Elizabeth 1 st held her first privy council here and it is now an almshouse set in the most beautiful gardens. I went along to see Chenies Manor’s Tulips yesterday afternoon, and they were looking gorgeous in the sunshine. They’re just past their peak, but still spectacular. Chenies Manor is open for a ‘bonus day’ today, between 2pm and 5pm, and it’s probably the last chance to see the tulips at their best. (Normal opening days are Mondays, Tuesdays and Bank Holidays, 2pm to 5pm) The gardens are also great for kids to run around in and explore, and there were a few kids there yesterday afternoon, after school, enjoying exploring the different gardens. The highlight for me though was the house tour. I live near by, and often walk past Chenies Manor, and it was absolutely fascinating to see inside and hear all the amazing anecdotes and history about the place. I won’t ruin the surprise, but it involved trap doors, tunnels, ghost stories and my own highlight - walking on the actual oak floor that Elizabeth 1 walked on, in her favourite room! The house has no windows on the south side, and I’ve always wondered why this is. The answer is that the owners didn’t want to risk the Plague wafting in the wind from London! You can book tickets online and they are £7 for the gardens or £12 for house and gardens. Kids under 3 are free, otherwise £4. With the house tours you get a time slot, and it lasts about 45 minutes. There’s free parking on site, a cafe (afternoon tea sat at tables and chairs outside is very popular) and toilets. Finally, make sure you check out ‘Elizabeth’ Oak, which is in the gardens on the south side, close to the parking. “Gdyby kobiety były u władzy, nie byłoby wojen”. Nie wiem jak wam, ale mnie ten tekst zawsze podnosi ciśnienie. Zwłaszcza, że często towarzyszy mu coś w stylu “kobiety są mniej skłonne do zachowań agresywnych” czy wręcz - i tu już odpalam rakiety - “kobiety łagodzą obyczaje”. Brzmi to jak komplement lub wręcz feministyczny postulat, ale nim nie jest. To klasyczny przykład tzw. życzliwego s*ksizmu (benevolent s*xism), czyli przypisywania kobietom konkretnego, wrodzonego jakoby zestawu cech - typu troskliwość, empatia, dobroć, łagodność, delikatność czy większa skłonność do moralnych zachowań - który to zestaw tak naprawdę znaczy “lubi poświęcać się dla innych i nie jest asertywna”. Bo nie są to, zauważmy, cechy utożsamiane ze stanowiskami odpowiedzialnymi (i dobrze płatnymi), za to idealnie kwalifikują cię do nieodpłatnej pracy opiekuńczej. Bo kto lepiej będzie zmieniał pieluchy niemowlętom oraz opiekował się osobami starszymi i niedołężnymi, jak nie osoba „z natury” troskliwa? Kto jak nie takie osoby sprawia, że “nasze codzienne życie toczy się harmonijnie i gładko w sposób trochę jakby niezauważalny”? No właśnie. Poza tym, jak pokazuje historia (i herstoria) oraz politologia, liderki wcale a wcale nie są takie pokojowe i łagodne. Więcej w kafelkach. A mini session on Thursday confirmed that my trusty Deus was on the decline, so made the decision out in the field to buy the Deus 2. Arrived Friday and had a good session out yesterday trying to get used to it. I was on my favourite stubble using the sensitive program, and by the end of the day I was super impressed with it. I dug a few pieces of iron and coke, but when I was getting foil I knew that if there was any hammered I should be getting them. As a singer acting on stage you do sort of get used to staring unashamedly into another person’s face…and singing at them well within what would usually be considered the normal boundaries of personal space. I’ve definitely spent longer staring intently at Angie’s forehead than anyone else’s (possibly even my husband 🤣) not to mention walking agonisingly slowly towards her in a poignant moment while singing (as in this photo.) G O O D Q U E E N B E S S I’m in the process of creating a new series of works exclusively for The Drang (The Icons), in which extraodinary women are tattooed with symbols that tell the stories of their lives. The first is the largest scale work I have completed (so far) - a monumental Elizabeth I. She’s almost life-sized. Although autocratic and capricious, Elizabeth I was a highly educated, shrewd, magnificently self-assured and skilled self-promoter, and her 45 years reign is considered one of the greatest in history. She was also unusually magnanimous and a motto of hers “Video et Taceo (I see and keep silent) was a mark of her religious moderation; now a tattoo on her right hand. The other inkings - an Armada sail ship, a pelican (her own personal symbol representing self-sacrifice, as a pelican was said to draw blood from its own breast to feed its young, alluding to Elizabeth’s role as mother to the nation); a broken crown and rose denoting the end of the Tudor dynasty, a cross, and of course the letter M - her eternal connection with her half-sister Mary Queen of Scots. The piece contains some of my most prized specimens. One of the world’s largest moth species, the Atlas moth is in contrast with the tiny British pug moths that emerge from Elizabeth’s bible. A huge golden beetle (Chrysina resplendens) is a jewel on her necklace, and a rare aberration of a peacock butterfly (a naturally-occuring deviation of normal patterns - this one has no eye markings) flutters around her ermine stole.
