'The Tower' is historical fiction at its finest - an absolute MUST-READ! 🏰🧡 🏰 'The Tower' by Flora Carr is about Mary Queen of Scots' time imprisoned in Lochleven Castle in Scotland. It focuses on the dynamics between the Queen, her maids (Scottish Jane & French Cuckoo) and later, her lady in waiting, Lady Seton. As they grow more & more claustrophobic, it becomes clear that nobody is coming to their rescue. Will they risk an escape??! 🌟 I cannot even begin to explain how good this was. It felt SO VIVID, like you're right there in the room with them. The women felt so viscerally real - the stress of the imprisonment, Mary's pregnancy, the fear of the men in the tower. It was so tense, especially during the escape plots. ✍️ I think a lot of the reason why this book felt so immediate is that it's written in the present tense. Not sure why present tense is so controversial in historical fiction because it works like a dream in this! 🇫🇷 We get to know the characters really well, and are shown every nuance of their relationships and how they change over time. The rivalry between the two chambermaids, Jane & Cuckoo, especially fascinated me. 🌊 Loved how Greek mythology & Scottish folklore was woven into the story. Mary Stuart is often compared to a siren & Jane to a selkie. 📚 Flora Carr herself came to the York Waterstones to talk about 'The Tower!' She's originally from York & I got to meet her (& she signed my copy!!) I enjoyed hearing how she immersed herself in the research & spent time in museums to see objects Mary would have used and touched. 🧡 Overall, this was a STUNNING piece of historical fiction which I will be recommending to everyone. Em 24 de abril de 1558, num dia de domingo, a cidade de Paris presenciava um grande acontecimento: o casamento do delfim Francisco, filho do rei Henrique II, com Mary Stuart, rainha da Escócia. Já fazia dois séculos desde que a capital da França sediara um evento dessas proporções e a população se apinhava nas ruas em volta da catedral de Notre-Dame para ver o cortejo real passar. Para tanto, foi erguido um grande palco, com a intenção de que o maior número de espectadores pudesse presenciar o evento. Sob a plataforma, havia um enorme arco coberto com seda azul bordada com as armas da noiva e as flores-de-lis da monarquia capetíngea, dando a impressão de um céu salpicado de estrelas. À frente do séquito estava o duque de Guise, tio de Mary, seguido por uma banda de músicos escoceses, vestidos com as cores da casa da rainha: vermelho e amarelo. Atrás vinham os cavalheiros da família do rei, os príncipes de sangue e o clero, respectivamente. Depois, a diminuta figura do noivo, um jovem de 14 anos e de saúde delicada. Por fim, de braços dados com o rei, vinha a noiva, alta e graciosa, vestida inteiramente de branco, quebrando assim a tradição do tecido dourado. Arrastando uma cauda incrustada de pedras preciosas, ela adentrou a nave da catedral, onde fez os seus votos. O casamento entre Mary Stuart e Francisco promovia a união das coroas escocesa e francesa, além de garantir a possibilidade de que mais um trono viesse a se juntar nesse consórcio: o da Inglaterra, uma vez que a jovem era neta de Margaret Tudor. Por outro lado, a grandeza da cerimônia aprofundou o abismo entre a realeza, com seu caráter divino, e a pobreza do terceiro estado. Nesse contexto, não é de se estranhar que o delfim e a delfina se sentissem como um casal de semi-deuses, que deveriam ser constantemente adorados. O povo, por sua vez, foi excluído do extravagante banquete de casamento, oferecido no palácio de arcebispo, onde houve também um grande baile, em que o rei conduziu a sua nora, considerada uma hábil dançarina.
