False starts are so hard 🤯 Here’s how to stop them ⬇️ 1. Review nap lengths/wake windows/bedtime False starts are mostly down to overtiredness in my experience. Whether that’s down to not enough daytime sleep, wake windows that are too long, or too late a bedtime. Make sure that naps are evenly spaced, and that wake windows are manageable. Bring bedtime early by half an hour to an hour if you suspect overtiredness. 2. Make sure they’re not too hot Being hot can cause those early evening wakes. Make sure their room is cool by having the window open in the morning before it warms up, and then keep blinds/curtains shut for the rest of the day. Use a fan if needed. Dress in appropriate layers, using cotton clothing. 3. Review bedtime Can the back end of the day be a bit chaotic in your house? Perhaps it’s a screen-heavy time of the day, or maybe you have older kids running around making a racket. Perhaps Dad comes home from work to do bathtime and works your baby up into a frenzy? These things can contribute to false starts. I recommend keeping the last couple of hours of the day calm and peaceful, with plenty of connection time with parents. 💥 save this post so you can easily come back to it! ❓ want access to multiple videos to help with your little one's sleep? F A L S E S T A R T S are when you put your child down for bedtime and they then wake soon after. There are several reasons why your child might have a 'false start': 🌟Environmental reasons (too hot, too cold, the house is too noisy, etc). 🌟 You have a newborn (younger than 3-4 months) - they may still need a bedtime that is later than 8pm. 🌟 Under or overtired - check the awake windows for your child's age. 🌟 Too much day sleep - check they are not getting more than the recommended maximum daytime sleep for their age. 🌟 Discomfort - reflux, illness, teething, food intolerance/allergy, eating a dense meal too close to bedtime. 🌟 Using a prop - maybe they are being helped to sleep and are then waking up without the 'thing' that initially got them to sleep and they then need that 'thing' again to get them back to sleep. 🌟 Food - not having enough of a feed / food before bedtime. I always suggest a nice full feed and or a pre-bedtime 'sleepy snack' to help fill their tummies a little more before bed. If you child is having 'false starts', get in touch for further tips to get sleep back on track, I offer a free 15 minute call so you can tell me more about your little ones sleep and you can learn a little more about me. What if… your false starts were some of your best beginnings? (And how could that idea boost your confidence and creativity?) This is a pic of small area of an extremely unfinished artwork. Soon to be destroyed. Mwhahaha. As I began it, I imagined this piece would become an emotional expression of bathing bodies, emblematic of a journey of healing and trust… So I laboured over the composition and was careful about the colour palette. I made several attempts to rectify problems, to try to bring my ideas to fruition. In hindsight, I reckon, my work had become too careful, too worrisome. A classic case of Overthinking. So: Bathing bodies will soon be submerged beneath a layer of thick paint. (They’ll surely resurface.) But still I appreciate them for everything they taught me: Lesson One: I want to approach my next pieces with a greater sense of playfulness and abandon. Have some fun! Lesson Two: I work better if I create my colour palette as I am painting and not before. Lesson Three: I can’t resist getting in there with some pencil for increased variety. Have you learnt any helpful lessons from your own false starts? (In art or in life)

Is your baby experiencing those frustrating false starts shortly after bedtime? 🌙 These interruptions can really throw off a good night's sleep! 😩 There could be several reasons behind them: ✨ Sleep Pressure: It's all about finding that sweet spot. Too much or too little sleep pressure can lead to false starts, so tuning into your baby's cues is key. ✨ Discomfort: Comfort is crucial for a restful night. Whether it's tummy troubles from new foods or discomfort from temperature changes, addressing these issues can help your baby settle more easily. ✨ Sleep Hygiene: Sometimes, a few adjustments to your bedtime routine can make a world of difference. Dimming the lights, adding calming activities, and establishing a consistent routine can set the stage for better sleep. ✨ Needs Fulfillment: Your little one might be waking up seeking extra support from you. Meeting these needs can help them settle back to sleep more quickly. ✨ Developmental Changes: Sometimes, those false starts are just part of a developmental phase. While they can be frustrating, rest assured that they'll likely pass with time. If you're struggling with false starts, you're not alone! This morning while out on my walk I decided to switch up the podcast I was listening to. I had remembered hearing about @thetillagepodcast from someone. So glad I did! The episode that randomly popped up for me was on False Starts. I don’t know about you but there have been many false starts in my life and art career. The workshop that I thought would be packed with people and wasn’t so it was cancelled. The series I began to paint that was never finished. The teachable account to teach online classes that is still there waiting for me. So many. It would be easy to give up on my dream of my art reaching millions. Or the books I have been writing on and off for years! The calendar I began to create. I think we all have had those “false starts”. In my experience they were stopped by fear of not being good enough. However, there is something that happened to me call it age, surviving a stroke, Yoga Teacher Training, or just finally trusting my intuition that has me looking back on those false starts as set ups. They are reminders that this dream of mine continues to show up. I may not follow every idea, but I show up. This is the chapter where I set fear aside and just trust. What doesn’t work out was not meant for me, at least at that time. False starts are like unanswered prayers, trust in the timing of your life! Have you had false starts? Well, I hope whatever dreams you have you work at them and never give up. @federicoclavarino : I always try to carry out the tasks I assign during my workshops, and the last time I taught at Palm Tree Workshops I responded to one of my exercises by taking pictures of the tiny snails that I found sticking to fences, walls and the like all over the place. I later found out that they do so to seal themselves off from the heat in the summer. They estivate, which is like hibernating but in hot weather. I later found a housing development nearby, and wandered around the shells of future apartments. I am sensitive to the need for shelter and I could feel a strong connection between the snails and the houses. A while later me and my partner Tami started to work on a new project, called The Crab’s House, which is all about home-making and belonging somewhere. Maybe these pictures will find their way into the project. You never know what you might find in Santorini. 👉Applications are open, details and registration at the link on our profile. . . . . . . #palmtreeworkshops #federicoclavarino #photoediting #photographyworkshops #photographyeducation #personalprojects #falsestarts #santotini

@federicoclavarino : I have lived outside of Italy for almost half of my life now, but I often go back. There were a few years in which, whenever I was in Italy, I would obsessively photograph junk mail as it accumulated in people’s letterboxes. I thought of it as an exquisitely Italian phenomenon, and I still haven’t seen it happen in the same way anywhere else. Anyway, there was something in them that made me nostalgic, and I came to think of them as bouquets. That’s when I also started taking pictures of flowers. It’s often like that. One picture becomes many similar pictures, and with time these latch onto different ones. Photographs have their own lives, they proliferate and make connections. These images eventually coalesced into a larger body of work, yet to be published as a book. 👉Applications are open, details and registration at the link on our profile.. . . . . . . #palmtreeworkshops #federicoclavarino #photoediting #photographyworkshops #photographyeducation #personalprojects #falsestarts #santotini

@federicoclavarino : I often see or imagine things I cannot photograph, so I make quick drawings on my notebook. I always have one with me. As a tool, it is similar to a camera, I use it to record thoughts as they appear and save them for later. Going through a notebook is like sifting through contact sheets: something you noticed in the past suddenly hits you. I found this quick sketch of someone with a very neat haircut in a 2011 notebook. I remember I was interested in the ways we govern the unruliness of bodily hair. I took the photograph in 2014, I remember running after this guy one day in Utrecht, as I recognised the image from the notebook. It was published as part of a book called The Castle, published by @dalpinebooks. 👉Applications are open, details and registration at the link on our profile.. . . . . . . #palmtreeworkshops #federicoclavarino #photoediting #photographyworkshops #photographyeducation #personalprojects #falsestarts #santotini #dalpinebooks

What is a false start? A false start in baby sleep refers to when a baby wakes up shortly after being put down to sleep for the night, often within the first hour. This could be one wake or multiple wakes until they finally settle into a longer stretch of sleep. False starts can be frustrating and leave parents feeling disheartened after investing time in their bedtime routine. False starts may happen because of inappropriate bedtime, discomfort, or dependency on sleep associations. Firstly, your child’s daytime sleep habits play a significant role. Ensuring they have an appropriate amount of sleep for their age and stage of development is important. Are they getting too much or too little sleep? If they were put to bed too early, they may not have had enough time to build up sleep pressure. Were they awake for more than 20 minutes after being laid down? Also, if they were put to bed too late, they might be overtired, did they crash to sleep within 10 minutes after being difficult to settle? Other reasons for false starts include pain or discomfort. Consider if they are hungry—did they refuse their last feed or not eat dinner? Are they experiencing teething discomfort, trapped wind, colic, or illness? Are they too hot or too cold? Additionally, is your baby dependent on a strong sleep association, waking up looking for it? Identifying the root cause may require some trial and error while closely observing your child’s sleep patterns. If you would like help and support with this, please reach out. Moving forward haphazardly today, we become a solution looking for a problem to solve. Innovating without a #clearandpresent need risks complicating an otherwise simple situation. This second moon produces plenty of #falsestarts and exaggerated feelings. However, today we will #feelthepinch that comes with wasted time and resources. Like cultivating a well-organized agricultural field, prosperity only accumulates when we begin to manage our potential within disciplined boundaries. So join forces. There’s safety in numbers. The requirements of alliance do not truly limit our options, they define them! In the process of verifying alliance, managing our own vulnerabilities by putting our trust with others #tothetest is common in this 2nd moon. Yet, manipulation will be extremely risky today. Don’t play games. Transparency is best. Be direct, even blunt, if necessary! #Additionbysubtraction is a great way to clarify our situation. When we feel #safeenough to make a commitment to group effort, others are bound to take notice of our contribution. Our dedication meets good omen and produces good feelings all around. Is your baby constantly ruining MAFS for you? Baby’s asleep, wine in hand, tv on, feet up, MAFS intro starts..... BABY WAKES! Here are some common causes for those pesky false starts: 🏁 Undertired: If your little one’s sleep pressure is too low or the wake window before bed is too short, they might be under tired and not quite ready for bed yet. They can get themselves to sleep but it’s not enough sleep pressure to keep them asleep. 🏁 Overtired: On the opposite end of the spectrum, if their wake window before bed is too long or they haven’t had enough sleep during the day, they could be overtired and an early bedtime might better suited. 🏁 Sleep Cycles & your Environment: Babies will actually always wake at night after their sleep cycles. The key is having them be able to resettle themselves right into the next sleep cycle. To help achieve this, we always want to make sure that the environment babies are falling asleep in, are the exact same environment that they wake up to overnight. This can include things like being held my mum or dad, rocking or even during a feed. DM me if you’re wanting to make it through your MAFS episode and we can chat about how we can make that happen for you. #babysleep #parenting101 #motherhoodthroughig #lifewithlittles #needsleep #babysleepcoach #aintnohoodlikemotherhood #parenting101 #organisedmum #sleeproutine #sleepregression #sleeptrainingsuccess #holisticsleepcoaching #sleeptrainingtoddler #mummymoments #babysleeptip #improvesleep #mumslife #babyofinstagram #aussiemumsandkids #sleepybaby #sleepdoctor #babycare #aussiemumsandbubs #aussiemums #aussiedads #aussiemumsinbusiness #aussiemumbloggers #mafs #falsestarts

Firstly if your baby is under 8-12weeks a later bedtime is totally normal. But let’s say your baby is 4months + and you want a 7pm bedtime but your baby is currently falling asleep around 9/10pm… You want to do 3 things 1. Start waking your baby at 7am every morning 2. Make sure the last nap is the shortest - max 30-40mins 3. If your baby falls asleep at 7pm and wakes shortly after don’t get them up, focus on resettling them back to sleep instead and you’ll see within 3 nights your baby starts settling down for a longer stretch of sleep #babysleep #babysleeptips #babysleepconsultant #7pmbedtime #babyroutine #falsestarts #bedtimebattles

False starts are annnoyyyying. Ya? And honestly they’re super common. This is when your baby wakes up 30-60 minutes after being put down for bed, usually after one sleep cycle. Admittedly, false starts can be a bit tricky to figure out and can take some trial and error. 👉The false start could be due to a normal developmental phase and will pass on its own. 👉Undertired/is bedtime too early? Baby may have not built up enough sleep pressure in between last nap and bedtime. 👉Were they very tired or dysregulated at bedtime and may benefit from an earlier bedtime? 👉Are they having some discomfort? Sometimes laying babies down right after a feed can make them uncomfortable. 👉Do they need another feed? There is nothing wrong with feeding to sleep but sometimes if they are very tired and fall asleep quickly they may not get a whole feed in and wake up after a sleep cycle needing a bit more. 📣If you want a bunch of tips to get better sleep without sleep training, comment “18tips” and I’ll send you 18 Ways To Get Better Sleep Without Sleep Training! 🌿False Starts🌿 Does your baby go down to sleep quite well but then wake up 45min to 1 hour later or stir frequently in the early part of the night? They could be experiencing what is known as a false start. Common Causes: 👉 Overtired or under tired: review baby’s wake windows & nap schedule, check for early tired sleep cues, set a consistent routine. 👉 Developmental leap: baby may be learning a new skill or their circadian rhythm may be maturing. Support them through this phase. Remain consistent & provide baby with lots of opportunities to practice their new skills during the day so they don’t wake to practice at night. 👉 Sleep associations that are out of baby’s control ie baby needs the parent to intervene to help them back to sleep - baby will require this input at every waking eg feed/rock to sleep, dummy, etc. Consider habit stacking & slowly removing the sleep association that is most reliant on the parent (I’ll post on habit stacking soon). Practice putting baby into their sleep space awake & ready to sleep instead of drowsy. 👉 Sleep environment: check the room temperature, baby’s clothing, sleep sack, noises, night lights and natural light entering the room (light raises cortisol levels - wake hormone). 👉 Hunger: using my eat-play-sleep flow of the day can help to ensure baby has full feeds to ensure hunger is not an issue that impacts sleep. Does anyone else feel like this year has had a few false starts? I don’t know about you but feel like im waiting at the gate still trying to get motivated to get going. All I’ve been wanting to do is stay in vacay mode and hug my dog. Maybe this post is a little too honest There is something in staying still that I feel is important for me personally right now. I’m not quite ready to get going on the treadmill of working life just yet but I’m on my mark and slowly getting there. Creating constant content for a solo business is hard and social media can be overwhelming and exhausting especially when you’re flying solo and don’t have the mega budgets other brands do or the natural inbuilt understanding of new platforms aka TikTok or video stories. I just wanted to be honest and let you know that even with the best customers and the cutest fur babies to make content with it is ok to take time out to be able to start again. Nothing is more annoying than putting your baby or toddler down to bed for the night and they wake up after one sleep cycle 💤😴 This is called a false start. The easiest way to handle false starts is following the below tips: 👉🏼 Pay attention to the timing between their nap and bed time, to ensure it’s aligning with their body clock. 👉🏼 Check the sleep environment and remove and distractions like light or noise. 👉🏼 Avoid actively playing with them so they know it’s still sleep time. 👉🏼 Keep the room dim and try to resettle them right away. 👉🏼 Gradually adjust their sleep schedule to avoid overtiredness. 👉🏼 Consistency is key! Stick to the plan to help them sleep better over time. #falsestarts #nightwaking #sleepcycle #sleep #paediatricsleepconsultant #sleepconsultant #infantsleep #babysleep #toddlersleep #naptime #napping #momlife #dadlife #effortlesssleepsolutions

✨Tuesday Tip ✨ Is your baby treating bedtime like a nap? Are they waking up 30-45 minutes after falling asleep? There are a couple reasons this could be happening. 1) An issue with baby’s schedule. Your baby could either be overtired or undertired! They may need some adjusting with wake windows. 2) They aren’t falling asleep independently. If you’re struggling with false starts, or just in general with your child’s sleep, send me a message! False Starts If a baby wakes frequently at night especially in the early part of the night, this is known as a false start. This can occur shortly after going down or approx. 30-60 mins from falling asleep. It’s usually as babies transition out of sleep cycles & come into what’s known as a partial arousel. This can be so frustrating, essentially it’s as if they have taken a power nap & are now fully alert, making resettling very difficult. They usually require extra support to fall back to sleep again in this scenario. There are many reasons for false starts, but the good news is there’s usually a clear reason behind them. Once you identify what’s causing false starts, there are a number of things you can do to ensure they don’t occur. See slides above for common reasons & what you can do. As part of my sleep plans we can work through this & many other issues that you may be experiencing. Dm for enquiries. Hope this helps. Did you know that two-thirds of preschools in the U.S. are segregated by race and socioeconomic level? I’m loving this book by sociologist Dr. Casey Stockstill. Her research highlights the ways that structural inequality shows up in two very different childhood classrooms. Stockhill looks at how these differences impact children, teachers, families, and communities. A totally fascinating and important read! I can’t wait to get to the conclusion and read her recommendations. (I first heard Dr. Stockstill on The Integrated Schools Podcast, which I will link in our stories.) @integratedschools #MontessoriForAll #FalseStarts #WildflowerSchools #ArkansasMontessori #PeaceEducation #hollyhockmontessori

Thank you so much! 💙🌒✨ A well rested family is a happier and healthier one. If you would like some support this is how it all works... 1. Get in touch and we will book in a FREE 15 minute call where you can give me a quick explanation of where you are at with sleep currently, I can suggest which of my packages would suit you better and you can decide if I am the right fit for you, your child and your family. 2. I will send you out my ‘sleep survey’. This is a comprehensive questionnaire all about what sleep looks like in your household currently but also delves into your birth, your post-partum experience and personal wellbeing, your child’s health and any medical issues, their temperament, routines and rhythms and the sleep environment. It is not and cannot be a one size fits all approach. Babies and children all have very different needs. 3. I will write you up and send you a plan of action on how to move forward with your sleep goals. 4. One-hour phone call/video consultation where we can talk through the plan and I can answer any questions. False Starts… Ever felt that victory of successfully putting your baby down for the night, only to have them wake up 30-60 minutes later? Welcome to the world of "false starts," where bedtime triumphs can turn into nighttime challenges. Why does this happen? Let's break it down: ▪️ Over-tiredness: When your little one is overtired, it's like they've had one too many cups of coffee. Cortisol levels spike, making it tough for them to settle and stay asleep between sleep cycles. ▪️ Under Tired: On the flip side, if they're under-tired, it's party time after the first sleep cycle. They wake up, feel refreshed (or treat it like a nap), and struggle to drift back to sleep. ▪️ Sleep Habit Attachment: If your kiddo relies on rocking or feeding to sleep, they might wake up on a mission to find that magical sleep association ritual. So, what's the plan? Here are some ideas: ▪️ Wake Window: Use age-appropriate wake windows to dodge the overtired or under-tired traps. It's like finding the sweet spot for bedtime. ▪️ Independent Sleep: Teach your little one the art of falling asleep independently. It's not just a skill; it's the secret weapon to conquering those wake-ups between sleep cycles. ▪️ Routine: Consistent bedtime routines are like the bedtime superheroes. They signal to your baby that it's time to wind down and drift off to sleep. ▪️ Sleep Environment Check: Ensure the sleep environment is top-notch – cool, dark, and white noise are the trick. So, to all the parents struggling with false starts,”you're not alone! If these nuggets of wisdom don’t quite solve your struggles, slide into my DM’s. Let’s work together on getting that cherished uninterrupted sleep back! Because let’s be real, that means more you-time. . . . #falsestarts #gotheftosleep #gobacktosleep #sleepdeprived #tiredmom #tireddad #tiredparents #sleepconsultant #sleepconsulting #pediatricsleepconsultant #sleepcoach #babysleepconsultant #chapelhillsleepconsultant #sleepconnections #infantsleeptips #toddlersleeptips #babysleeptips #gentleparenting #durhammomapproved #nycmom

We’ve all been there: we’ve put our little one to bed, sit down exhausted looking forward to having a moment to ourselves only to hear our baby waking up soon after. Sometimes it’s relatively easy to support our little one back to sleep. Other times, it’s like they’ve forgotten the memo about bedtime. Why does this happen? First thing to say is it’s really common (and really hard!) and doesn’t have a one size fits all answer. “False starts” aren't an actual recognised “problem” (if that makes sense) that have a specific solution. Basically, as long as we bear in mind that it’s not necessarily a sign that anything is wrong with your baby, all’s fine! “False starts” can be caused by a number of things such as: ✨ Bedtime being too early / a mismatch of sleep pressure and your little one’s body clock. ✨ Bedtime being too late – when little ones fall asleep super quickly, the architecture of their sleep can be affected such that they wake up more often between cycles ✨ A period of significant developmental change ✨ Your little one is processing difficult/different experiences during a particularly busy day and is seeking comfort and reassurance 5 things to consider to help: 🌜 Sleep needs – take a look at my previous post about how much sleep your little one may need. Are they tired enough at bedtime? 😴 Naps - think about whether you might need to adjust the number of naps and/or nap timings. If your baby has been awake for a really long time after their last nap, they might be showing tired cues due to excessive sleep pressure and treat bedtime like a nap (if their body clock isn’t there yet and levels of melatonin are still low). 🛏️ Maintain a calm and relatively consistent bedtime rhythm: predictability is often very helpful for little ones so continue doing things that help transition them to a calm state 😄 Lots of opportunity during the day for energy release, wiggles and giggles! ✨ Experiment with the above. You may need to try out a combination of different things. As with everything sleep-related, you can absolutely do nothing and ride it out. That’s perfectly fine and things will usually naturally settle on their own in any event 🤍

1/25/2024, 11:43:18 AM

✨ When your little one experiences false starts, waking around an hour after initially falling asleep, consider these potential causes: too early or too late bedtime, hunger, discomfort, and developmental changes. ✨ To address this, start by identifying the root cause. If bedtime is too early, adjust it gradually in 15-minute increments. If it’s too late, consider shifting the second nap or bringing bedtime forward. ✨ For hunger-related wake-ups, try feeding earlier in the bedtime routine. Ensure proper winding after feeding and address any discomfort issues like wind, allergies, teething, or illness. ✨ Little ones may also experience disrupted sleep during developmental changes as they practice new skills. Encourage daytime practice to help them master these skills. ✨ Sometimes, your baby might seek comfort between sleep cycles. Provide reassurance and support during these moments. ✨ Addressing quick wins, may help too. More on this coming tomorrow! ✨ Follow for more tips. 💤 Have you ever wonder why your baby wakes up “right after” you have put them to sleep? They cry, it’s so hard to settle them sometimes and it confuses you because you think: “if they are crying, they are too tired, so why they just don’t sleep? 👀 False starts are those episodes during the first part of the night when your baby is waking up often unable to go into deep sleep. They are a sign that your baby’s wake windows or sleep needs during the day need to be adjusted. So taking a look at how their day and naps develop, you can avoid false starts. #babysleep #falsestarts #babysleepcoaching #restbaby #sleepbaby #sueñobebe #schlafberatung #babyschlaf #babyschlafcoach

Are you sitting comfortably? 🌙 Here’s a story from my early days as a mum. Picture this: bedtime struggles with my first baby, a process that seemed to stretch for hours with countless false starts. I'd get my hopes up, only to have her wake up again a few minutes later. Frustration, overwhelm, and a tinge of annoyance settled in. 😒 My health visitor sold me the 7pm to 7am fairy tale, assuring me that if I followed steps x, y, and z, my baby would magically settle down. 🚨 Spoiler alert: it didn't work. 🥺 I felt like it was all my fault, comparing my experience to the myth of other babies peacefully sleeping from 7 to 7. I blindly followed the advice from my health visitor. I suppose it was natural to believe that a professional involved in my child’s health must be the fountain of all knowledge. 🧠 However, the reality was quite the opposite. I ended up thinking my baby was a 'bad sleeper.' When in fact the bedtime I was aiming for was far too early for her. Turns out, my baby was just a night owl and still is at 23! 🦉 So what’s the point of this tale? Don't be like I was! If I could turn back time, I'd trust my instincts, tune into my baby, and ignore the crap generic sleep advice! Those early months of motherhood would have been less frustrating and more joyful. False starts; when your baby wakes within an hour of putting them to bed!!🤯⁣ In my experience, it’s usually down to timings. Overtired; not enough day sleep means excess cortisol in your baby’s body. That means they startle awake when they transition to a light phase of their sleep cycle. Undertired; their last nap was too close to bedtime or they just had loads of day sleep and they aren’t tired enough to stay asleep! Timings are so key to a good night’s sleep. If you want better nights, you’ve GOT to meet your baby’s day sleep needs. Of course there are other influencers when it comes to false starts. DISCOMFORT will always play havoc with sleep. As will your baby’s ability to settle themselves to sleep without your support. But timings are undoubtedly a huge culprit!! Are you experiencing false starts right now? Have you thought about how their naps are going during the day? #falsestarts #babysleeptips #sleepcoach #babynaptime #tiredmama

🌙 False starts 🌙 What is a false start? ✨A false start is when your baby wakes 45-90 minutes (1-2 sleep cycles) after going to bed. Even for frequent night wakers, most babies will sleep for the first 2-3 hours as melatonin and sleep pressure will be high. Some babies will need help getting back to sleep after a false start, but then sleep through the rest of the night unaided. Causes: ✨Usually, overtiredness! Tips: ✨ Check your routine is allowing for enough day sleep for your baby’s age ✨ Keep an eye on your baby’s wake windows to avoid overtiredness ✨ If it persists, sleep training can help resolve habitual false starts If this sounds familiar and you could do with some advice, drop me a DM! #peacefuldreams #sleepconsultant #babysleepconsultant #toddlersleepconsultant #falsestarts #falsestartsatbedtime #babysleeptips #babysleephelp #toddlersleeptips #toddlersleephelp

Do you find that your baby treats bedtime as a nap? You put them down to sleep, only for them to wake up just 30 minutes later. This is known as a false start bedtime. Here's how to fix it: 1) Wake windows need some adjusting: Overtired babies who are exhausted from the day may struggle to fall asleep and may wake up frequently during the night. On the other hand, babies who aren't tired enough can also experience false starts. They may initially fall asleep but lack sufficient tiredness to stay asleep for an extended period. 2) Your young baby 0-4 months needs a later bedtime: Some babies (0-4 months)with a bedtime between 7:00-8:00 pm may treat it more like a nap rather than a long sleep. This is a normal part of their development. At this age, many babies simply require a later bedtime to better align with their sleep needs. 3) The day is starting too late: If you're trying to establish a bedtime between 7:00-8:00 pm, but your baby's day started after 8:00 am, they might not be ready for nighttime sleep yet. Most babies require around 12-13 hours of daytime wakefulness before settling down for the night. 4) Baby is falling asleep during bedtime feeding: Falling asleep while feeding at bedtime can sometimes lead to false start bedtimes. Even though your baby may be tired enough to initially fall asleep, they may not be tired enough to stay asleep for a substantial duration. Have you ever had to wake your baby during a feeding, even after they've recently taken a nap? While it can make them feel sleepy, it doesn't necessarily mean they're genuinely tired. 5) Baby is being laid down drowsy or asleep: Babies typically transition to a new sleep cycle every 40-50 minutes. If they are already very drowsy or asleep when placed in the crib, they can abruptly reach the top of their sleep cycle and become startled, thinking, 'Where's mom? This isn't where I went to sleep! This is different!" If you're feeling stuck, know that you're not alone. I'm here to help you create a sleep plan tailored to your family's needs & coach you through the process. 🌙 Struggling with bedtime blues? You're not alone! Many parents find themselves apprehensive about the nightly routine, especially when it comes to their little one's sleep. ✨False starts? ✨ You’ve put your little one down to sleep, managed to make some dinner and just as you sit down, they wake up. Does this sound familiar? It’s not very fun, and can really impact on your precious evening time. But there are a few reasons why this could be happening. A false starts is basically your little one waking up quite soon after being put down (usually 30-50 mins after). It can happen once, or involve several wake ups through the evening. They can happen for any age group although they are more common with babies under 12 months as they need more support to get to sleep (and there is a lot going on for them!). One of my last families for 2023 and it’s a wonderful high to finish the year on! At 6 months corrected this gorgeous little dude was having up to six false starts a night, was waking for big chunks of time several times a night and only napping for 20-30 minutes at a time during the day. His super switched on Mama has always prioritised his sleep and as a result he was already capable of self-settling to sleep which gave them an awesome head start. We made some adjustments to his awake windows and focused on resettling one nap at a time. By the end of our two week support period this little champ was now linking both of his day naps, had had no false starts for over a week and super excitingly - had slept through for the last two nights!! Most importantly, his amazing Mama felt confident in her ability to adjust his day as she needed to and had a clear way forward for supporting his sleep 🤍 #sleepsupport #sleepsuccess #gentlesleeptraining #familyled #falsestarts #splitnights #catnaps

When most people talk about a ‘false start’ they are referring to when their child wakes up in the first part of the evening (typically before midnight) or shortly after waking. Sometimes little ones can be easy to resettle, other times not. It may happen just once, or it may happen 3-4 times per night. Regardless, it can be very frustrating and leave parents scratching their heads for the reason why! There can be many reasons. To understand what you can do to improve false starts, first we need to uncover the cause.
