So, let's say your child is resisting. How do you get them to cooperate? You ask them open-ended questions! Instead of telling your children what TO do, you ask them what THEY need to do. When you ask them open-ended questions, it requires them to think with their brains! “What do you need to be ready for bed?” or “what do you need to be ready for school?” Those two questions are game-changers. You will see the kids use THEIR brains instead of relying on yours. And there will be less resistance as you are not commanding them in any way😊 Don’t spoon-feed them the answers. I’d never felt a shotgun straight to the heart until this moment. It just seemed to come from no where, and honestly I was just having this moment of “ahhh this is bliss, I don’t know what I was so worried about. Look at me #nailingit” 😏 When I thought about it, it made sense. The baby was taking a lot of my time and as a result we were spending a lot more time inside and a lot less time together than he was used to. The feeling wasn’t that he wanted to set fire to the baby, the feeling was jealous. Whilst it might be hard initially to accept these ‘difficult’ feelings, especially when they arise towards someone else we love, diminishing them won’t make them go away. Try to keep the long term game in mind - it’s much better for your child to let you know how they’re feeling than pretend that everything’s fine before pulling a sneaky eye poke behind your back 😉 When you can still accept a child that’s jealous, they learn: 🌟I’m safe to share my feelings 🌟My feelings can be trusted 🌟My family still love me 🌟My family understand that being a big brother is tricky Next week I’m hosting a FREE workshop giving away four tools that I use in my parenting and private play therapy practice that will help you respond to tricky moments like with confidence. If someone is struggling in the water, it's best to stay on dry land to help them. Use a rescue tool (or whatever you have nearby) to reach out or throw to them. Why: - You have better leverage outside of the water to pull them to safety. - If you are in the water to aid them, they may use your body to save themselves, and push you under in the process. The ONLY exception is if the swimmer is a small child and struggling in shallow water no deeper than your waistline. It is then reasonable to assume you'd maintain full control of the situation. When toddlers first start hitting, many parents worry that it might mean their child is not empathetic or kind, but research actually suggests the opposite! 🤯 Toddlers’ use of aggression is actually associated with being more likely to show kind behavior. That is, research finds that 12-month-olds and 33-month-olds who are more aggressive are also more likely to share with other children. However, for school-age children, the opposite is true and aggressive behavior predicts more unkind behavior a year later. This may be because aggressive behavior at this age causes more social problems which then reduces their opportunities to show kind behavior toward others. ⭐️ The takeaway message here is that your toddler or preschooler showing aggressive behavior does not mean they are not kind or empathetic, but if your child is still showing aggression when they reach elementary school, you may want to help them to work on their social skills so they learn more adaptive ways to handle their problems, or consult with a mental health professional. ⭐️ To learn more about how to prevent and manage hitting and aggression, check out the full Parenting Translator newsletter at parentingtranslator.substack.com or through the link in my bio! How other people interact with your child will always be a big deal. This is obvious: of course parents are sensitive about how people interact with their kids. But it’s not always obvious when it’s showing up, or if the unintentional triggers from an interaction that doesn’t feel good to them is fanning the flames in a reaction about something else. Like, maybe you’re in a Family Team Meeting talking about how their child is doing in a foster home, and it’s stated their child is doing well. Meanwhile, the parent is sitting in anger with the knowledge that the foster family uses time outs, which the parent doesn’t believe in. Is that trigger acknowledged? Is it minimized? Is it disregarded? I wish I would have held more space for this discomfort when working with families. I remember hearing not to “let” parents ask “inappropriate questions” of their kids during their time with them. I’m not saying it’s okay, but some additional considerations: 1. Inappropriate questions are subjective. 2. When parents have such limited time and communication with their kids, they might want to cut right to the chase and ask questions about the things they’re concerned about. 3. It is a huge skill to know how to ask questions in a way that effectively gets at information you’re hoping for, ESPECIALLY with kids. 4. Whether from a place of insecurity in parenting, or a lack of control, parents may try to control the narrative to bring themselves up. That may sometimes be done “inappropriately.” If you see that happening, how can you encourage them to bring themselves up in healthier ways? It’s not something that was modeled by our parents for a lot of people who are parenting in this generation, so doesn’t feel outrageously familiar. It is a skill does not develop overnight or without active learning and practice. What may be coming across as negativity to the professional may actually be a parental protective capacity that’s flying under the radar, coming from a place of care. If you find yourself thinking “why is this a big deal” - it’s because they’re a parent. How other people interact with your child will always be a big deal.

one of our all time favorite spots - Morton Arboretum! 🌳 there is soo much to do here and it changes throughout the seasons. they have tons of fun events and things happening there, too! we’ve gone to train shows, holiday lights, beer fests, you name it. the children’s garden is so fun. it’s great to come back as your child grows and watch how their interests change. we’ve been taking our son since he was just a few months old for picnics and walks and now he’s a toddler running around the place! 💡pro tip: it’s my go to place for some mom friend play dates! start off by having your kids run around and play in the children’s garden, and then plop them in their strollers and go for a walk around the lake so you and a mom friend can catch up and actually chat without chasing the kids around haha I’d totally recommend getting a membership here. we’ve had one for years and it’s so worth it! plus you’ll get deals and discounts for events.
