Hope has been having ups and downs since her recovery from surgery for removal of a mast cell tumor and associated lymph node. With lots of TLC from community members and volunteers, some wonderful energy healing sessions, and walks with the neighbor dogs, she's been recovering well. We have had to work to keep her meds balanced to keep her comfortable. Every now and then she has a bout of nausea and has trouble eating for a few days before bouncing back. Taking Hope to see her oncologist when she's not feeling well is always a tough decision because our poor girl is a homebody and super stressed in the car and at the vet office. We always do our best to accomodate the many different traumas that so many of our rescued animals have suffered, while balancing their need for medical care. We are grateful to each and every one of you who has sent well wishes for our sweet girl and for those of you who have and are still contributing to the cost of her ongoing vet care. Sorting donations yesterday, and this silly little lady jumped on the back of the car and perched on the rear windshield wiper. 😂 🍋💧🍋💧🍋💧🍋💧🍋💧🍋💧🍋💧 Lemondrop Community Outreach helps feed 2000 people in the #Tallahassee FL area. Tallahassee is currently at nearly 50% food insecurity in the 32303 zip code alone and 25% poverty rate in the entirety of the city. We also support almost 3000 people getting fed in the Pomona, California area, where the poverty percentage is 17%. Lemondrop Farm Sanctuary supports around 100 animals who are either too damaged or have special needs and need permanent long term care. Mostly farm animals, but also a few long term resident or elderly canines, exotic birds and freshwater fish (including Axolotls). Last year our revenue was $6000 total, which funds the Farm Sanctuary and the Community Outreach programs in both FL and CA. We have received no government or local grants or any sizable support for nearly two years. All our staff are 100% volunteers and receive zero compensation for the time they spend with Lemondrop. Happy Monday ☀️ Cinnamon is doing a little better now, but still seems lost without his best friend. He’s doing better. The first day he was incredibly angry. He was ramming everyone away and didn’t want me to love on him like I always do. He actually rammed me so hard I have a pretty good bruise on my forearm. I get it, though, that anger of losing a best friend so unexpectedly. I knelt in front of him crying and told him I know exactly what he’s going through, and he finally bowed his head down and rested his face in my hand. I can’t even stand it. He is hanging close by Maybelle, though. The two of them have grown tighter over the past few days. He’s also been seen hanging with Keen which didn’t typically happen before. Most of his time is spent hanging with the cows, though. Maybelle, as you can see has fully recovered from whatever made her very sick 🙏🏻 The sun is out, the pasture is open, and all is well right now, and that’s the best we can ask for. Forest and Meadow! ❤️ We haven't shown too many photos of Forest with his nose all healed, but look how perfect it is! Back in December he got into a fight with one of our other rabbits and he had to have reconstructive surgery. It was a traumatic experience, but we are so glad he is back with most of his friends. We are still trying to integrate Thistle, but since the fight, it's proven to be extremely complicated. This is the most difficult rabbit introduction we have ever attempted. We are, as always, proceeding with much caution. However, since much progress hasn't been made we might be introducing Thistle with a different rabbit colony here at the sanctuary. Sometimes the change in our rescue residents is so drastic, it’s hard to believe! This is Thumbelina (now Tom, as we discovered it’s a boy!). This little Axolotl was rescued and rehabilitated by Robust Reptiles, then passed to us for ongoing forever care. Tallahassee is currently at nearly 50% food insecurity in the 32303 zip code alone and 25% poverty rate in the entirety of the city. We also support almost 3000 people getting fed in the Pomona, California area, where the poverty percentage is 17%. Lemondrop Farm Sanctuary supports around 100 animals who are either too damaged or have special needs and need permanent long term care. Mostly farm animals, but also a few long term resident or elderly canines, exotic birds and freshwater fish (including Axolotls). Last year our revenue was $6000 total, which funds the Farm Sanctuary and the Community Outreach programs in both FL and CA. We have received no government or local grants or any sizable support for nearly two years. All our staff are 100% volunteers and receive zero compensation for the time they spend with Lemondrop. Isabel, her daughter Hazel and Shadow were our first goat rescues ten years ago. They’ve been with us since the beginning. My kids were little when we got them and they spent so much time together. We have loved these goats since the day we got them. As many of you know, Isabel hasn’t been well the past several weeks. Her abdomen kept filling up with fluids, which required a needle being inserted by the vet and the fluid to be drained. We did that procedure multiple times. It seemed to help her feel better for about 10 days and then she’d fill right back up again making it difficult for her to breathe or get comfortable. The last time she was drained, the vet gave her another ultrasound and found a large tumor attached to her liver. We kept her as comfortable as possible the past few weeks. On Friday she was lying in the sun as she always did, snuggling with her Hazel. She seemed happy. But then she tried to get up and fell a couple of times. It was absolutely heartbreaking 💔 to see her struggle. We knew it was time. The vet was scheduled to come out but we found her dead on Saturday morning, apparently choosing to die on her own terms. A group of wonderful volunteers and I buried her and gave her a proper funeral/celebration. Although my heart is broken, I’m comforted by the fact that she had an amazing life with us, with her goat friends and especially with her daughter. They got to spend their forever, together. As I write this post, I’m sitting in the sun with sweet Hazel who has seemed out of sorts since her mama passed.
