The last couple weeks have been hard. I have been trying to turn my garden beds by hand and it hasn’t been going well. I wanted to go “No Till” because it is supposed to be better for the soil. I planted a cover crop in the fall, and it had grown nicely. But I didn’t do my research on how to terminate the cover crop… big mistake. THEN the alpaca poop we got had some pig poop mixed in that isn’t aged. If you know anything about animal compost, it needs to be aged otherwise it’ll burn your plants. So I was literally picking out clumps of pig poop out of alpaca poop. THEN my shelf of seedlings that were outside hardening off blew over and spilled everywhere. I was crying buckets of tears over tiny little plants on the ground. I am also the mom of two young children. Trying to get any task completed is a challenge when you need to put everything down every 2 minutes to take care of the kids. I called my husband in TEARS yesterday (pretty unusual for me). Just sobbing because I couldn’t do what I wanted with the garden. I was so frustrated that the kids were interrupting me, that the compost wasn’t what I expected and that it was slow going trying to deal with the cover crop. My garden is supposed to be my outlet and yet I was ANGRY! Why can’t even one thing go to plan?! But God… God gave me an amazing partner. Dave was so calm and said “ok I’ll get a tiller, it will be ok.” So he showed up today with a tiller and helped me get the compost worked in to the soil. The garden was ready for planting within 4 HOURS! I had been working for DAYS! But I didn’t want to ask for help. I thought I could do it on my own. I am so glad I have a husband that supports my dreams and pitches in. That calms me down. That helps my unrealistic expectations and dreams come to fruition. Day 6 fringe double tulips- a reminder that we harvest tulips in tight buds for the longest vase life. They often look small in a bunch but after a few days when they open they take up a lot more space! There is flower food packets on the cart to add to your vase to allow the flowers to continue to have the energy to open. Also tulips grow in the vase! I had a message today from a Flower Farmer that I have met briefly. It made my heart sing. Because she said that this week’s episode of MULCH felt as though I had taken a dive into her mind and read her thoughts. I’m not into mind games. It felt like that because I have been in that position of fear. And I am honest enough to admit that I still feel it sometimes. Fear isn’t bad, so long as it is more about healthy respect than paralysis. Our other careers have taught us to share relevant and timely information. Fall 2022 we tried something new. I had gone through a lot of personal growth that year, I had been inspired, and wanted to embrace beautiful things in my life again. We ordered a bunch (about 100 😳) of tulip bulbs and grape hyacinths to fill a small patch of lawn above a rock wall. We didn’t quite know what to expect, or if they’d even grow. The following May, green leaves started to emerge, and what followed blew me away. The colors were outrageous, and the beauty made me feel alive inside. It was a new chapter, a new beginning. I began cutting flowers and giving them to teachers, to neighbors, and to family. Their faces instantly lit up with joy that I would even think to gift them these. Their joy made me feel a deep sense of happiness that I hadn’t felt in some time. My grandfather who passed away in 2016 was a gardener, a grower, a keeper of the land. He and his garden are sprinkled throughout all my memories of childhood. I realized the happiness I was feeling was in part because of the pure joy people were showing me when they received a bouquet, and of the memories that began flooding in. We moved to our house 15 years ago, dreaming of building a farm in honor of my grandfather. This past fall we planted 200 more bulbs of tulips, daffodils, and are going to start seeds of cosmos, dahlias, poppies etc indoors to go outside. The dream started to unfold, and I thought, why not have a small roadside stand with fresh cut flowers for people to capture this wild happiness for themselves. The memories that inspired this vision happened at my grandfathers home on Brady Ave, and Brady Ave Blooms will be the vision come to life. It is my deep honor and tribute to him, and something that makes me feel alive. So that's a wrap on the 2023 season. We started with a wedding and a new baby and ended with a new baby. Just over 5 months of non stop blooms. I picked the last of the dahlias at the weekend for a birthday bunch of flowers then dug up the tubers until I could no longer see this evening. Frost has come to the farm! There have been soooo many pollinators on the dahlias the past couple of weeks. Even though the flowers looked tired and spent I couldn’t bring myself to cut them down. We're working to put our summer garden to rest this week. And as I reflect on the season behind us and start making plans for next year's garden- I'm already making note of the flowers + plants that we WON'T be growing again... (I'll share more about that in an upcoming YouTube video) . BUT the one area that we're actually expanding is our daffodil patch. Since discovering specialty daffodil varieties a number of years ago, I've planted lots of different daffodil bulbs. And each year, I try and add a few new varieties to my collection. . There's nothing quite like enjoying these beautiful + fragrant blooms during the earliest parts of spring when the rest of nature is still muddied and grey from the winter season. . As a gardener, I especially appreciate the natural ease of growing that daffodil bulbs afford. With daffodils there's no seeds to start or trays to tend to for weeks on end, there's no watering that needs to be done or staking that you have to do. I’m so thankful I cut these on Saturday before Frostmas hit on Monday! All I had time to cut were dahlias and marigolds but I kinda like them together! 😊 The dahlias will last a couple more days (usually 5 day vase life, but it’s already been 5 days and they still look good) yet the marigolds will last a good 10 days!
