LM-27 High Tops & Flat Tops LOREN MYHRE Oil, Oil Stick on Canvas 30 x 30 This diptych, painted and drawn on old, aged fabric, features the sock or boot shape that you will find as a repeating motif in Loren’s work. The forced direct comparison between the completely painted and richly textured canvas on the left and the barely touched fabric on the right is eased by the rectangle that resides between the two unequal halves of “High Tops and Flat Tops.” The contrast between the two pieces provides a pleasing transposition of the elements they each contain: solid vs. outlined shapes, full color and aggressive texture vs. largely vacant substrate, markings that resemble distinct fingers vs. smudges that allude to touch, right-facing vs. left-facing shapes. I find this piece to be a quiet contemplation on how things can be equal without being the same. What are your thoughts? 会津の古家具/古道具店issen（@issen_aizu）の新装開店に行って来ました。 移転先のAIOI△（アイオイデルタ）は古い漆器店を改装した複合施設です。城下町という地の利を生かした建物の使い方は流石だなという雰囲気でした。 私はというと、うろうろと買い物をしては立ち話して、コーヒーを頂きながら経年で淡く変色した漆喰壁を眺めたり、気になる家具を置く自宅の場所を考えたりとのんびり楽しんでいたのですが、のんびりしている間に狙っていた家具を他のお客さんにあっさり買われてしまい、大層落ち込んでしまったのでした。 というか未だに落ち込んでいるのですが、まあ他にも良い感じの古物を購める事が出来たので善しとします。 自分ではこういう時の決断は早い方だと思っていたのですが、しかしこれでは企業の代表者としての威厳にも業績にも関わってくるので、昨日手に入れたこの大理石の容れ物に印鑑を入れ、書類が来たら秒で判断を下し決済印を押す練習でもしようと思います。 issen、高速バスで行って飲んで終バスで帰ってくるのがお決まりのコースになりそうです。 #福島 #郡山 #古道具 #アンティーク #舊工 #antique #brocante #foundobject #layout #大理石

Favorite recent project; “Say Hello to my little friend!” 🌀😜🪬🐍💜 It’s kind of a #foundobject love story featuring Feather & I on a Walk (more on these later) reveling in the chill, blooming beauty of a spring afternoon when I saw this fabulous stuffed snake atop a small, sad pile of mostly picked-through baby things at the curb. Student projects from "Unexpected Repetition." They range from fun and playful, such as the lamp covered in Chinese food sauce packets. To serious and cathartic best represented in the first photo. This one pulled at my heart strings and made me incredibly proud. The student wore this back brace as a child and chose colorful push pins on the outside to reflect that this was a medical device intended to be helpful for children with scoliosis. The inside reflecting how it felt while they wore the brace. The excitement they had while working on this piece is why I love teaching. LM-08 Deep State LOREN MYHRE Steel, Wood, Plaster 25 × 8 x 14.5 Made from steel, wood and plaster, “Deep State” demonstrates Loren’s geometric work in incorporating a found birdhouse and his own bespoke steelwork. With the negative space between them maintained by metal braces, the white cubiform birdhouse and the slanted metal pyramid engage in a tenuously delicate balance, the differences in material, form and color resolved by both of them having aged patinas and a similarity in their masses and proportions. Their relationship in space transforms as you circle the sculpture, the cube and pyramid alternating between tugging together and pulling apart, the shapes seemingly aligning and departing from each other by turn. A wonderfully meditative piece, at once bold and quiet, at once stable and dynamic, as sublime as it is patently rough. I have been installing the final work in its degree show location this week! This timelapse shows the building of a stacked piece I am working on to add more height amongst the central part of the structure I currently have. LM-22 Crossing a Channel LOREN MYHRE Oil, Steel, Collage 18 × 14 Several renditions of the pyramid icon using different materials - steel, wire and oil paint - populate a field of found fabrics in “Crossing the Channel.” A couple of the cut steel shapes have morphed in their asymmetry into shapes that vaguely resemble socks or boots, which are another icon in Loren’s work that you will encounter in the works at the gallery. Sweet blossoms peek through the open shapes at the top of this work, a wire pyramid contained within one of them, almost looking like a garden trellis. A brawny black line connects the two open forms, and echoes the dark finishes of the steel shapes in the lower part of the collage. The one red form balances the orange diagonally opposite, just as the simple open form counters the two dark and the solid shape diagonally across. The tiny fleck of yellow in the lower left corner cheerily says, “hello, there!” Rustic elegance, gentle balance, and sophisticated symmetry are all found in this wonderfully nuanced work. 이 동기화된 2채널의 영상은 여러 형태의 터널 또는 지하 통로들을 따라 흐른다. 가장 인간만이 만들어 낼 수 있는 풍경 속을 제한된 이동 속도를 따라 여행하면서 우리는 단 한번의 멈춤없이 부드럽고 효율적으로 계속해서 전진하며, 고요하면서 규칙적으로 통과하고 지나가면서 존재한다. 우리가 만든 사회는 다른 방식으로, 다른 속도로 혹은 다른 목적을 위해 설계될 수도 있었겠지만 이젠 아무도 대안책을 알지 못한다. 우리는 그저 그러한 흐름에 따라 움직일 수 밖에 없고, 그 통로에서 벗어날 수도 없다. 끝없이 이어지는 관을 철저히 비추는 조명과 끝이 보이지 않는 공간을 휘감는 메아리는 인간의 존재를 초월하는 완벽한 평화를 향해 나아간다.

The shape originated in Loren’s earlier works as a pyramid and gradually evolved to be softer and rounder. It appears as a linear drawing or as a filled shape, underneath other elements or on top, as a focal point or as a secondary element in his compositions. I am posting these four individual pieces together so you can see the different ways Loren’s icon manifests itself using different approaches and contexts.
