FOXCATCHER Despite the film receiving five Oscar nominations, I haven’t heard anyone talk about Foxcatcher ever since its respective awards season, and so I decided to give the film a go after coming across a DVD copy of it way back in the summer. If nothing else, one thing that Foxcatcher did really well was serve as a vehicle for three great performances. Channing Tatum sold the intense physicality and buried rage of his take on Mark Schultz quite well while also having some great chemistry with Mark Ruffalo, but Steve Carell was borderline unrecognizable from his usual persona, with his portrayal of John du Pont leaving me always at least a little unnerved through his pause-heavy line delivery and creeping psychopathy. The wrestling scenes in Foxcatcher were also decent, with their observational camerawork and immersive sound design giving each match an appropriate amount of realism and tension. One of the worst things a biopic can do is take a fascinating true story and suck all of the life out of it, and despite Bennett Miller’s efforts, Foxcatcher did exactly that for me. While Miller’s directorial choices were technically competent and allowed the central performances to shine, they also felt dull beyond belief, with the languid pacing, flat camerawork, and generic score making each scene drag out longer than it should rather than evoking the melancholy that it’s clearly trying to go for. The film’s commentary on American exceptionalism also felt a bit forced to me, with its already surface level themes being dragged down further by a weirdly in-your-face approach for a film that was aiming to be so static and deliberate. Great performances aside, I found myself unengaged by Foxcatcher from start to finish, and although calling it Oscar bait seems a bit extreme, I would totally understand why someone would label it as such. 1/19/23: Foxcatcher An imperfect drama by Bennett Miller tells the “true” story of two brothers involved in the world of collegiate wrestling and the mad man who backed them. A huge swing by all involved especially the incredibly magnanimous and deft turn by Steve Carell as real life creep John du Pont. The movie is a dark look at the relationships of coaches and would be ones showing the affects that both can yield. Supporting Carell throughout the feature is the always reliable Mark Ruffalo and what might be a Mount Rushmore best by Channing Tatum. What causes it to stumble is the pacing at times. Also the message seems a bit hazy as the film concludes. Though it has faults it also gives you the same foreboding sense that lingers even as the final moments play out. It saddens me we haven’t seen another contribution from Miller since this film. #63 🎥: Foxcatcher (2014) 🇺🇸 —————————————— Director: Bennett Miller —————————————— Foxcatcher tells the true-crime story of the relationship between John Du Pont and two brothers, Mark and Dave Schultz, both olympic-gold winning wrestlers . When I sat down to watch Foxcatcher for this review, I was ready to say this was an underrated gem that’s been overlooked for years. However, upon watching it, I realized there’s a reason this movie doesn’t get brought up much nowadays. This movie doesn’t say anything really, or at least it struggles trying to say something. Every theme that the movie clearly brings up like the degradation of American values, the cost of winning, and the role of the rich and powerful in our society, never gets played out or explored more than a surface level examination. Which is a shame because the rest of the movie is really solid. You have great performances by everyone involved, including what I would consider a career performance for Steve Carrell in the role of the millionaire John du Pont. This film also has a great style. Everything is very understated, with very little and often no music in every scene. Its lets the performances by these actors and interesting camerawork by cinematographer Greg Fraiser take centerstage. One of my favorite things about this movie is the beautiful long shots of the du Pont estate and the surrounding areas of Valley Forge. It’s a shame this movie never gets off the ground thematically because I think exploring the world of inherited wealth and families like the du Ponts could be really interesting. First of all,Hats off to Mr.Steven John Carrell for choosing this Script. The character he played is a wrestler named John du pot. An excellent performance delivered by comedy actor for such an eccentric character proved comedians can also give breathtaking performances. Coming to the movie, FOXCATCHER revolves around life of three wrestlers who try to win an Olympic gold. This is a film which is low on plot and high on character arcs. The characters evolve throughout the movie, with positive and negative vibes dwelling in them. The directing is what I think I like the most about this movie! There are a lot of moving parts to make this work, and the film is executed very well.
