THE STRANGERS (2008) 🔪 I really wanted to like this; so many people raving about it especially with a new movie coming soon, unfortunately for me I really hated it 😩 (please don’t come for me 😂) It was dragged on so much, I mean 90 odd minutes of waiting for a climax, a girl can’t wait that long 👀 I get the whole cat and mouse game, instilling fear into people is what makes a great movie but this had me yawning. The constant back and forth of menial jump scares, lack of tension and Liv Taylor’s annoyingly soft voice made me mad the film wasn’t over. We’ve seen home invasions done plenty of times but I wanted MORE. I wasn’t scared nor thrilled. The kills (only 2) were boring, I get the mental torture but this was unimaginative. The masks to me were okay, the bag head one being the best of the 3 but don’t honestly get the hype for them. The one thing I kinda wanted was obviously a back story, I think that movie may be worth watching. Overall, hated it. Won’t watch again. Will I try the sequels? There’s a slim chance, I’ll always try a new movie. Our conversation reassured her that she wasn't alone. In that moment, I realized that my purpose was reaching people.....and it assured my desire to reach as many people as I can. ✨Book Review✨ The Frozen River - Ariel Lawhon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a phenomenal read! This is a historical fiction novel NOT based on a war, which was a nice change. This novel is inspired by true events of Martha Ballard’s life. This story is based in the late 1700s and follows a midwife, Martha, and a tale of allegations of rape and murder, which are told from bits of her diary entries. This book shows the infancy of our judicial system and how women were disregarded on all metrics. I loved the flow of the book—it wasn’t too slow or too fast paced and the timelines were easy to follow. Martha was a fantastic FMC, and I just loved her tenacity, wit, and compassion. Her relationship with her husband and children was very sweet. Book Review 📚⭐️ NINETEEN STEPS by Millie Bobby Brown; published in 2023 1942, London: The city continues to be hit by air raids and it’s citizens must seek shelter every time. One of the safest places to do this were the underground tube stations and tunnels. Some people slept there every night, some went down and found space when the sirens went off. One such person is 18 year old Nellie Morris, who goes down with her family, close friends and neighbours. By day, she works at the city council office as assistant to the Mayor. A chance encounter with and American Airman, leads to romance in the midst of war and hardship. It also leads to dreams of seeing the world and experiencing much more than she would if she continued to live in London’s East end. But war doesn’t stop for dreams. One after the other she suffers great tragedies that tear her to bits. But each time as it seemed all hope was lost, something helps her believe again. This is very well written book. Fiction, it might be, but it is based on true events. I know because I have read about these incidents in other books about this time as well. And while it is a story of hard & scary times, it is also a story of love and resilience, of strength and creating happiness. I really liked it. Book 16 of 2024! Let me just preface this by stating that I am a nutso over Irish Literature – I think I am sort of growing fanatical about it. Once I see the Irish tag in a book, picking it up is a no-brainer for me. Ordinary Human Failings caught my attention from its title before reading what it’s about. I never paid mind to a title as much as I did this one. Great wording choice! The book is literally about ordinary human failings. It is inspired by true crime. Moreover, it navigates the politics of abortion in Ireland, in addition to generational trauma. The novel follows a dysfunctional family’s engrossment in alcoholism, emotional detachment, familial deprivation, and loss, which resulted in the death of a 10-year-old as a consequence under the hand of Lucy (A member of the family in talk.) What really made me knock out a star and a half is how draggy the story tended to get on some occasions and how the blurb was a little misleading since it depicted that the book’s gonna be about a crime; however, it turned out to be about the complex dynamics of this one family. In general terms, the book is compelling. The writing is superb, and the events are enjoyable. For what it’s worth, the book is longlisted for the 2024 Women’s Prize, and I hope it makes it. I highly urge anybody to pick it up. 💗
. > R E V I E W < When did you last visit a library? I’ve wanted to read a Jennifer Ryan novel since I added her debut The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir, and her subsequent books, to my TBR shelves. I’m happy that The Underground Library was her first book I read. The World War II story set in London during the Blitz is told from the points of view of three young women working in London’s East End: - Juliet, a librarian newly transferred to London and the Bethnal Green Library - Katie, a library employee who plans to attend university in the fall - Sofie, a Jewish refugee who fled Germany alone Through them, Ms. Ryan describes everyday life before and during the midnight bombing raids when thousands of citizens sheltered in an underground train station. After the library was badly damaged, the books and shelves were relocated to the shelter as an important resource for its nightly residents. None of the women’s lives unfold as they expect, and society’s conventions of the time impact their options and choices. The plot has a relatively large cast of characters that I was able to track since most were well formed and memorable, even the “villains.” I appreciated the themes of intergenerational friendship and found family, two of my favorites. The variety in the main characters’ backgrounds provided a three-dimensional perspective of this time in history. I was first introduced to the actual history of the Bethnal Green Library in the underground tube station by reading the 2023 novel The Little Wartime Library by Kate Thompson. Each author has her own storytelling style, but I found they complimented each other to give a full picture of this wartime phenomenon.
