Happy Arbor Day! When the Hewitt family first arrived on the Ringwood Manor property, the surrounding hillsides had been stripped bare of their trees due to more than 100 years of iron mining and charcoal production. Sarah Amelia Hewitt’s first goal for the property was to recreate the original forests by planting thousands of seedlings. Gifford Pinchot, a visitor to Ringwood and the first Chief of the United States Forest Service, was a leader in promoting conservation of forests. Pinchot was also a family member of the Hewitt family having married Mrs. Hewitt’s great niece, Cornelia Edith Bryce. Mr. & Mrs. Pinchot visited Ringwood Manor on several occasions and his philosophy of forestry likely also influenced Mrs. Hewitt. On March 26, 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt addressed the Society of American Foresters at the residence of Gifford Pinchot in Washington DC. In his speech he emphasized the importance of preserving forests, while at the same time discussing the important role of timber in construction and mining. Pinchot, who was an important friend and confidant for Roosevelt on conservation, was at the time the Chief of the Division of Forestry. He had originally been appointed by President McKinley in 1898, and enjoyed such confidence with TR, Pinchot was named the 1st Chief of the @u.s.forestservice after Roosevelt created it in 1905. Pinchot is indeed one of the most important figures in the life of Theodore Roosevelt, and he founded the Society of American Foresters in 1900, along with seven other colleagues in the Division of Forestry. Today, the @americanforesters which seeks to advance the science, education, and conservation of American forests, has over 11,000 members and is the largest professional organization of foresters. Doch damals war alles gesperrt da der ganze campground gesperrt war wegen Umbaumaßnahmen. Letztes Jahr hat es dann endlich geklappt als ich mit @oliver.hummell dort war. Was ein schöner Wasserfall. Aber nicht einfach zu fotografieren. Nicht alles taugt wirklich. Diese Komposition hier war aber für sich selbst redend...einfach mega 😍 🇺🇸🇬🇧 In 2019 I missed that spot due construction works on the whole campground in late September. The whole place was closed for season. But last year it finally happened. I love those falls eben if they are not that easy to shoot. A man walks into a bar and starts drinking. He gets so drunk he pukes all over his shirt. He goes to the bartender and says “I’m screwed.. The other day I wrote about TR on March 2, 1907, setting aside “significant” forest reserves and the Agriculture Appropriations Act. Here is more of the story! Back in 1891, the Forest Reserve Act, known as the “Creative Act” was passed. This Congressional amendment allowed the President of the United States to set aside forest reserves at will, from public domain. But, due to TR’s aggressive use of the amendment, many westerners, from cattleman to loggers and homesteaders, complained incessantly that he was overstepping his bounds. They were unfortunately able to get enough support in Congress by 1907 to change the law. Senator Charles Fulton of Oregon, attached an amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations Act of 1907 which stated “Hereafter no forest reserve shall be created, nor shall any addition be made to one, within the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, or Wyoming.” The bill passed on February 25, 1907 and was sent to President Roosevelt to sign. TR had no way of vetoing the amendment without gaining more political enemies, and had to sign it into law by March 4, 1907. So, with little time to waste, TR spent the next several days consulting with Gifford Pinchot, the U.S. Forest Chief, about areas to designate as National Forests. By the end of their marathon work the next few days, they had created 21 new National Forests, and enlarged 11 existing ones, setting aside in total a new 16,000,000 acres of forests. Then, Roosevelt signed the new act!
