What a day for my first ever dig day! It was -1.5° when we set off to @bardontrailassociation to take part in their #soilsearching dig day in association with @rutlandcycling and @specialized_uk 🥶 Wrapped up in warm layers with no clue how to build a trail, I was happy just to be set to work digging up dirt and barrowing it to those that did know what to do with it! After the first few shovels, I soon warmed right up, but was still glad of a hot coffee when it was time to take a break. It was great to see the jumps take shape as barrow after barrow of earth was moved. Many hands make light work indeed and the jump was finished (almost) and test ridden just as the light started to fade from the hill. Time waits for no man. Neither do my geraniums. Even though my geraniums are still flowering, I need the pots to plant a display of bulbs for a spring performance outside my front door. So, here I am, lifting my geraniums and planting them into (re-used) plastic pots with the hope that they’ll overwinter in the slightly sheltered location of my patio. One of the problems with gardening in November - in addition to the cold - is the lack of daylight. I’ll admit to a slightly panicked feel as the darkness closed in whilst I was still trying to finish the transplanting. I mean, the dark doesn’t harbour spiders, does it? Or frogs? Or whitewalkers? Nah. Enriching the beds. When you buy a house that is relatively new - ours is 15 years old - one of the challenges is that the builders will often fill the flowerbeds with awful soil. A collection of builders’ rubble and soil with little natural goodness. It has been my ambition to gradually improve the soil in my beds - and I’ve been adding goodness to them every year for the last ten years. We make as much of our own compost as possible. And mine is particularly fancy compost. For Valentine’s Day a couple of years ago, The Grump gave me a pot to piss in. Apparently, chocolates, diamonds and lingerie were too obvious. And he thought a pot to help me deposit wee into the compost heap was the height of romance. It’s true; the nitrogen in urine can help the composting process and the gift of a pot avoided my having to unceremoniously balance my bum on top of our compost heap. The height of romance. I can’t comment on whether the pot has ever been put to use. But my home-made compost is pretty fancy. And a deep mulch will help prepare the beds for winter. And hopefully my flowers will thank me for it in the summer. I had a number of kind people sending messages of concern for my poor toes when they saw a recent photo of me digging in the garden in flip-flops. So I dug out my @drmartensofficial boots. These boots, and my funky laces, are original 1990s boots. They cost my wonderful parents a fortune when I was 14. They are boots that I reused in my 20s (swipe right!) to go partying. I have a zillion and one jobs to do this weekend… and one of them is to continue clearing the beds so that I have space to plant spring bulbs for next year. I’m going to be careful to not clear too much - I want to leave some foliage over the winter - but those bulbs really do need to be planted and so space needs to be cleared. And so the neighbours will see my arse waggling in the air for most of Saturday as I cut back and tidy. Onwards to the spring. Onwards to warms days.
