Good morning and happy Saturday🌺 When I met my friend @margaret.mary.anne at the garden centre on Tuesday we were both very restrained with our spending - it was too cold and windy to look properly! But I came away with this pretty pinky/orangey Geum which was dancing in the sunshine yesterday🌺. It’s not planted yet but I thought about putting it in my galvanised bucket? Expert gardeners - do you think it will be ok in here or does it need something bigger? It can’t be planted out as I have no garden to plant it in!! Football for me today and I’m already a bundle of nerves! It’s our last and biggest game of the season as we need to win to stay in play off position. Iris Hybrid ‘Golden Zebra’ has put on quite a show this spring. I don’t quite know what color to call it…golden brown, spicy brown mustard, yellow mustard, burnt orange…what ever the case it doesn’t look like a zebra! But this iris is happy in this garden, has multiplied well, and looks good with many colors. (I’m pretending it’s a neutral). I especially like it with the color blue. In the following Carousel of 10 photos you will see that it mingles well with ajuga, dianthus, columbine, and azaleas! In Photos 9 and 10 you will see where a wind storm knocked over some flower stems onto a path in what looked to me like a beautiful pattern.. like someone was decorating for a wedding! I left it just like that until the flowers were finished. This unique iris is about 18” tall and is hardy in Zone 3-9. Good morning folks, it’s very chilly here at the moment ! We have our heat going all throughout the night now just to try and keep the cottage a nice even temperature for Jeff. It’s lovely to wake up during the night and feel cozy and warm and it really helps with his chest. Miss D’s funeral was incredibly hard. It was such a lovely tribute to her. Managed to complete the first #feedingfriday of the year - giving a thorough watering and liquid feed to all pots and planters. I know it’s been cold and wet but very little rain makes into those pots! Watered the tender annuals in the conservatory aka makeshift greenhouse (see story). ‼️ Gave the roses a spray with @uncletomsrosetonic as I’ve spotted the first signs of rose rust. Keep an eye out for this. Small bright orange dots on the leaves (both sides and I’ll post to stories). If you see it, snip the leaf off and discard. You don’t want to let rust take over your precious roses! Vigilance is key! What’s blooming in the garden this week? Worked on cleaning up and just mowed the pathways. I leave the paths - weeds grow there but I keep them mowed. Without the plant matter in my paths I have erosion issues because my soil is loamy clay. Heavy on the clay in the rows. Also weeds have a purpose! They hold the soil in place and support the vast ecosystem that lives below the ground. Here we strive to improve the soil and support the beneficial organisms below and above! Blackberries made from a combination of waxes. While focused on choosing which images to use for this post I looked up and for a split second was confused as to why I had a blackberry on a toothpick (last slide). I couldn’t be happier right now. This is a steep north-facing embankment. We’ve tried all manor of plants, but everything struggled under the ash and birch trees. In the end, just four plants thrive here. Forget me not, Creeping Jenny. Privet, and Ivy! Although Jenny seems to be losing out to the others. Have you fallen in love with any of the new varieties of cosmos? I will freely admit I love these cheerful little plants. They are the most versatile of the annuals I grow: They look lovely woven through a border where their daisy-like heads lighten the feel of the planting 🌺 Pollinators love them 🌺 They make wonderful cut flowers, long lasting and prolific and, even better... 🌺 They are also happy in large containers (as long as they are given a little support, such as a stake or semi-circular support (pictured here). When I first started growing them, the colour palette was limited to white, pink and crimson but, in recent years, the range of colour and shapes has exploded. First came the ‘shell’ shapes where the petals curved in on themselves to give a paler outer shell with the true colour inside and with them came the doubles (I am generally more fond of single flowers than double ones but ‘Cranberry Clicks’ won me over – a double cosmos the colour of cranberries). Recently, a range of cosmos in the most delicate champagne, apricot and shell pinks has been available. This year I am growing Cosmos bipinnatus ‘Apricotta’ from seed. This variety and the other pastel shades are readily available from a number of reliable suppliers as seeds or plugs. Introducing Violet’s Pride, another new addition to the garden this year, one that I’ve had my eye on for some time now. This is the very first bloom of the season which is quite impressive considering I got her less than a month ago. I love the initial violet pink upon first blooming and how it gradually enriches to violet tones with time. The scent is surprisingly characterized by a powerful blackberry heart note, accompanied by sharp fruity and black currant. If I’ve learned anything in this 14-year journey of making our little cozy cottage a home, it’s that we should never be afraid to pivot when a space no longer serves our needs. Last spring, I used a pile of reclaimed brick on our property to build a sweet little garden patio. I envisioned the space being used for dinners al fresco, morning coffee, and bouts of afternoon creativity. But what I ended up with was a perpetually leaf-covered, unused mess. Rather than throw up my hands in defeat, I got to work rethinking the space. Instead, it’s become the future site of my @oneroomchallenge salvaged window greenhouse project instead … and the eventual star of my cottage garden in the making. Mostly whites around the garden 🪴 The arum lily is nibbled, but it’s put up with far worse. My grandfather asked if I’d like anything from his garden before he moved into a flat and I chose some arum lily. I planted it in a raised bed outside the kitchen door. Later, I had nowhere to put the bins. The brick-edged bed by the fence was the perfect spot. So for three years, the plant waited patiently under the bins. When we moved, I remembered the lily and dug where it had been and potted it up. After a few years, I had two enormous pots full. 30 years later, I still have them in their original pots. I have this little one in the greenhouse too. Myosotis sylvatica, the wood forget-me-not or woodland forget-me-not. One of the easiest plants for a brief, big bang of colour every April. Here I am proudly holding up a bouquet of chrysanthemums I grew from cuttings I purchased from a local Chrysanthemum society last year. The same society my grandma showed her award-winning chrysanthemums (one of them shown in the second image with younger me greatly admiring it). For the past six years, my admiration for flowers and desire to preserve rare varieties has completely consumed me. Immersed in old garden books and engrossed in British gardening shows, I have developed a fascination for unique and historic plant species. Just as intense as Carol Klein’s passion for a rare daffodil, I can be brought to tears by the beauty of a lost apple variety or a plant person’s efforts to form a national plant collection. With years of research and thousands of notes, I aspire to share my knowledge on the lesser known varieties and my experiences I have gather along the way. In addition to heirloom varieties, I want to also shine light on traditional crafts. My current explorations include Victorian flower-making, Putz house building, and the 19th-century German ornament-making technique called spun cotton.
