Phacelia is an excellent source of nectar and pollen for bees in the Autumn when they don’t have many sources. It is Earth Day today. We are celebrating by showing off the huge variety of habitats in our Borough and all the plant and wildlife they support. In Council, we are working towards restoring our habitats, one site at a time. I actually met Cahir in the maternity ward the day he was born as my little girl was born the same time. It's crazy to think of how much time has passed and to see them grow into their one wee people. It's why photgraphs, at any stage are so important. Those moments are so fleeting, even though as a mammy you find the days can be long. There is a nice moment during a trail run when your calves stop burning from a climb, the path underfoot is soft with mud and fallen pine needles, you’re sheltered from the wind by moss covered trees on either side of the trail, and the route itself is relatively flat, maybe even a slight uphill, and you think “wow, this is amazing, nature is wonderful, I could run like this all day!” and then bam! - you turn the corner and it’s the steepest hill of your life (or so it seems!) and you’re wondering why you ever thought this was a good idea in the first place. Applications are currently open for singers aged between 18 and 28, born on the island of Ireland and pursuing a career in opera to enter the vocal competition which will take place at this year's 14th Glenarm Festival of Voice. Five finalists will be selected from the applicants and they will join us in the beautiful coastal village of Glenarm from August 22-25 this summer to experience four days of intensive coaching from opera professionals before competing in a thrilling live competition finale on Sunday 25 August. There's also an opportunity for a piano intern to join us for the festival weekend. First prize for the winner of the Deborah Voigt Opera Prize is £2500. The winner of the Kathryn Harries Prize, voted for by the audience, receives £500 and the Song Prize winner receives £250. You might recognise some of our past finalists and winners in the image! 🔍 What Species Wednesday 🔎 Red Squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) A familiar face but an uncommon sight. 😷 Their bigger cousin, the grey squirrel, carries a disease commonly known as Squirrelpox. This doesn't affect the greys but unfortunately kills the reds. There are conservation efforts in place around the Borough by various red squirrel groups and Ulster Wildlife to protect the red squirrel population. 🏠 They weave sticks together to create a nest and line this with moss and leaves to make it cosy. This is called a drey. 🌰 Squirrels bury their food to eat in the winter when it is more scarce. Sometimes they forget where they've buried it and a tree may grow instead!
