On the afternoon of May 19, 2023, we left Berlin for a short side trip to the 'Havelländisches Luch' about 50 km to the west of Berlin. In this area of wetland with damp meadows and only extensive farming, there is one of the last surviving populations of Great Bustards (Otis tarda) in Germany. Since my early days of the study of biology it has been my wish to go there and observe these majestic birds. It took me to get the age of 45 until I was going there... And we were so lucky and could observe about a dozen individuals and the males even showd their famous courtship behaviour! The observation distance was rather good with the spotting scope. However, it was too far for making any spectacular photographs. Es war mein Wunsch, mal wieder Großtrappen zu sehen und er sollte sich erfüllen. Jaaaaa, sie waren richtig weit weg, aber positionierten sind dafür im schönsten Licht. Ich war jedenfalls happy, wenn das auch ganz schön gedauert hat. Da hatte nämlich irgend so ein Depp in dem dunklen Turm gehockt, alle Fenster waren zu, und damit rechnet ja nun wirklich niemand. Ich hab so einen riesigen Schrecken bekommen und den im Affekt absolut verbal gefaltet, der hat nix mehr raus gebracht. Überhaupt nicht meine Art. Hab selbst nen Schreck über mich bekommen. War aber auch irgendwie befreiend, zumindest im Nachhinein. Nächste Mal nehme ich mein Stativ mit und dann gibt's zur Not was auf die Rübe... Geht gar nicht so etwas.

Großtrappe / Great Bustard (Otis tarda) The Great Bustard mating season is slowly coming to an end. Over the past few weeks, I have often visited the Great Bustards, for example in the region "Havelländisches Luch", to observe them during mating. Dominant individuals spread their plumage and turn it inside out to create a huge, irregularly shaped, white ball of feathers that stands out in the open landscape. Also the prancing performance of the males 😄. You should definitely take a look while the mating is still taking place. . Die Balz der Großtrappen neigt sich langsam dem Ende. In den vergangenen Wochen besuchte ich des Öfteren die Großtrappen zum Beispiel im "Havelländischen Luch" um sie während der Balz zu beobachten. Dominante Individuen spreizen hierbei ihr Gefieder und stülpen es derart um, dass sozusagen ein riesiger, unregelmäßig geformter, weißer Federball entsteht, der in der offenen Landschaft weithin auffällt. Auch die tänzelnde Performance der Männchen 😄. Müsst ihr euch unbedingt mal ansehen solange die Balz noch stattfindet. . . . . . She was there waiting for us at the end of the walk towards the stones, by the bus drop off/pick up. I was so close that I could easily have stroked her (which of course I wouldn't do). There are only about 50.000 great bustards living worlwide, most of them in Spain and Russia. Such a fantastic treat for me last week - I had a private audience with Fergus - a quite formidable 23 year old Great Bustard! Hunted to UK extinction in Victorian times, Great Bustards were reintroduced to Salisbury Plain by @greatbustardgroup in 2004. However, when the group took on the initial birds for release, they realised Fergus was injured and not strong enough to survive in the wild. He has been carefully looked after ever since. During this time, he has had some famous visitors - once running off with part of a @bbcwiltshire microphone, and on another occasion mercilessly pecking John Craven from Countryfile (you can find the video with a quick web search if you’re inclined…). Thanks to @greatbustardgroup Great Bustards are now a self sustaining colony on Salisbury Plain; such an important fixture that they are front and centre of the Wiltshire flag. They are simply amazing birds, and we are proud to feature them on the Made In Wiltshire stamp we created for our bottles (along with an oilseed rape plant - their favourite food). Our Level 3 Year 2 Environmental Conservation and Countryside Management students had an exciting day out. The students embarked on a journey around @watatunga_wildlife to delve into the world of conservation strategies aimed at endangered deer and antelope species from around the world. Some of the amazing species included the mountain bongo, Indian Sambar (named Orja), Eland, Pere David and roan antelope. De foto's zijn niet zo best van kwaliteit want ze zaten erg ver weg en de lucht zinderde door de hitte. Het was goed zoeken in het hoge gras en het heuvelachtige terrein. Maar opeens zag ik ze, gedeeltelijk verdekt achter een heuveltje lopen.
