This plant smells EXACTLY like it looks. Truly! A little floral, light, clean, heavenly. I smelled it from like twenty feet away and was wildly looking around the manzanitas until I found it. It’s a ceanothus, I am going with integerrimus. The common name, deerbrush, really demonstrates a failure of imagination 😅. There was TONS of Yerba Santa, another yummy smeller, also. While I was on my birthday trip away, this handsome jackrabbit (Lepus californicus) came closer to me than any jackrabbit I’ve ever seen. I was a little concerned for him/her; it’s not safe or healthy for wildlife to be unafraid of humans. But it did afford an opportunity to admire their cute little feet, wuffly nose, and of course enormous 👂. Harbin Hot Springs update. I had my trepidations, 8 years after the catastrophic fire, which destroyed all the buildings, including the magnificent temple built by SunRay Kelley. But good news is that the pools are in better than ever condition. New sauna, great design and carpentry workin great. The hot hot pool is still intact with Mark Nichols’ whale sculpture still spewing semi-scalding water straight from the mountain. Cold pools perfect, I’d guess at 45 degrees A lot of heads-up concrete work everywhere. Registration, coffee stand, restaurant operating out of temporary buildings. Rental rooms in RVs by creek. New bath house/changing room almost completed. All in all, despite the woo-woo vibes that have always been thematic there, it’s a great place to do for you what hot springs do for you. A few photos from a recent visit to Harbin Hot Springs. I spent a lot of time at these springs back in the early 2000’s. This was my first time back since the wildfire damage and repair to the grounds. It felt amazing to be back in a place that felt simultaneously familiar & new. Both the dragon gate and the grounds cat, Brenda ( pictured) survived the fire and continue to represent the integration of the past within the modern design. I felt truly giddy walking up to hill the springs late night, in the dark, under what seemed to be at least 6 million stars. It reminded me of every late night, warm weather adventure I’ve ever had, and there’s just something extra special to be able to comfortably wear shorts & sandals at night. Alternating between cold and hot pool plunges during the day amongst other friendly faces, beautiful flowers & views also felt extremely uplifting. Super excited to visit again. I’d remembered noticing it earlier farther to the left pulled out my phone to get a closer look, thinking it was a familiar face. & wow Got a bunch of video and pics this star looking ship is very similar to one that would be floating outside my window every night all night for almost a year.
