What a treat of a day! Liz Fenwick, author of nine novels set in Cornwall, signed copies of her new paperback The Secret Shore today in the Bookshop. I so enjoyed this book - we first meet Dr Meredith Tremayne, cartographer and Oxford lecturer, in 1942 when she is recruited by Naval Intelligence for her mapmaking skills, working as part of a team operating secret flotillas out of Helford. As this pacy story of espionage, bravery, love and loss unfolds, Liz’s meticulous research and attention to detail brings to life an exciting time in the history of this beautiful part of the world. I also really enjoyed the chance to chat to Liz about her writing process, how one story leads on to another, how when writing she finds her novels can go in a completely different direction as they develop. What I particularly loved is the world she is creating - while each novel can be read as a standalone, some of her characters recur in different novels, at different times in their lives which adds an extra layer of richness. Hopefully next week I’ll remember to take more photos 🤦♀️ Today we started off by doing some pelvic floor exercises, followed by a short pyramid of body weight exercises, before moving on to using a suspension trainer for the strength element of the class, finishing with a nice little cool down including some core work and stretching. - all of the exercises were able to be modified and could easily be changed up if the littles needed to cuddled. Exercising with children looks a little different, but it’s not impossible, and it can be a fun and rewarding experience for you both. Hi, I’m Vicki, I’m a mum and a fitness trainer and I’ve not set foot in a commercial gym for a workout in almost 5 years! So, if I haven’t even been to gym in such a long time, why should you try my classes….. Because, I get it, I get how hard it is to find time for yourself once you become a mum, how tough it is to re-fill your own cup when you are needed so much at home, or how the last thing you want to do (or have the time to do) when your kids are in bed is go to the gym. I understand that it might not be possible to find childcare to allow yourself the time to exercise, or the feelings of guilt that you might feel when you take time for yourself, I get it, because I’ve experienced all of those things too. Which is why I decided to qualify as an instructor and run shorter child friendly classes, so that I could help other mums that might be in the same boat as me. Since becoming a mum I’ve learnt that good results can be achieved from short workouts, featuring a mixture of strength-based exercises and body weight exercises, that I don’t need to dedicate hours each week to exercise or use fancy gym equipment, that it is possible to squeeze in exercise around the demands of a family, and that getting the foundations right is key to making sure your body stays strong and healthy. That’s why my classes are only 45 minutes long – to fit in with your busy lives and why your little ones are welcome. My classes are suitable for beginners, those who are pregnant or recovering from birth, or any mum who is wanting to get fitter, regardless of what stage of motherhood they are in. 🐕🦺 For our main walk today, we did one of our favourite 5 mile circular walks from my house to The Crate at Wendron. We walked up the Redruth Road, through Trenethick Barton to Rowes Lane, then on to The Crate for refreshments. Lottie remembered that good dogs got a treat, as well as remembering where all the water was to cool off and drink from en route. We then returned through a small wooded area, along a footpath, walked down through Lowertown then back along the Cober Valley. My feet are now very sore and I’m beginning to wish I could get a new pair! Only 5 more days to go and another 25 miles to reach my goal. We were lucky to dodge the rain today. 🐕🦺 We’re into the last week of the Walkies Challenge now and we’ve hit 170 miles so far, so we’re on track to get to 200 by the end of the month. 🤞 Today’s main walk was a 5 mile circular walk from my house to Truthall Halt Station via St Michael’s Church and briefly on Sithney Conmon Hill. We had fabulous views over Helston on the way. We then went past Trannack School to Lowertown and home via the Cober Valley. The views coming down into Lowertown were over to Goonhilly, Porthleven and Godolphin and Tregonning Hills. Again the hedgerows were looking and smelling lovely. I did have a gate between me and the cattle, who were very inquisitive. I can easily see how you could feel threatened when they start to come towards you.
