New @weareislestudio work… Myself and @vincentwalden have just completed the exhibition design for EPONA - The Wild Pony of the North, at @rheged_centre working with Eden Arts EPONA is an exciting landscape art project to place a representation of a Cumbrian fell pony on the side of Blease Fell in the evocative Lune Gorge in Cumbria, between the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Parks. The figure will be in the spirit of the chalk horses on hillsides in southern England. Our work for this project includes overall creative direction, icon illustration and panel design, working with the brilliant Matt Searson at @door6_uk who are responsible for all the print and installation. One particular challenge was how to communicate a piece of art that doesn’t yet exist or have a representative design to show. Weaving through the design is an epic poem by @taletrailswalks based on the story of Epona. The painted ponies are the result of workshops with primary schools in the area around the Lune Gorge, led by @chlonfusticate, AlexandraJakob-Whitworth, Anja Phoenix and JoBramley-Wright. Take a peek into our latest project with Clavering Primary School and Creative Youth Opportunities! Together, they are crafting mosaic masterpieces depicting the beauty of sea creatures and coastal scenes. These stunning mosaics will come together to form a bench at Crimdon Beach, a welcome addition to our Seascape project. The inspiration for these scenes came from when we asked local school children - What was important to them about the beach? We were expecting them to say walking or playing with beach balls or sunbathing but to our surprise, they emphasised the importance of environmental conservation in their artwork. They say good things come in pairs… In more good news for the week we’re delighted that our interpretation work on the Sydney Metro Central Station project has been honoured as part of the Sydney Metro shortlisted-entry in the Architecture category of the 2024 National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards. Our approach used the overarching interpretive theme of ‘Journeys and Gatherings’ which allowed for a wide range of site stories to be told. Artefact developed a video tracing the history of the Devonshire Street Cemetery from 1820 until the present day; an interactive allowing users to explore a map of Central Station archaeological finds and heritage buildings; a large wall feature of an 1879 plan of the area with archaeological finds displayed within it; and large-scale public artworks by Bundjalung artist Dr Bronwyn Bancroft. “I’m really proud of the team for developing such creative and engaging solutions that bring to life the archaeology and history of this unique site,” says Artefact’s Managing Director Dr Sandra Wallace. “Congratulations to Carolyn, Alex, Charlotte, Sabrina and Katherine from our Heritage Interpretation Team and others who also worked on this Sydney Metro-project including Woods Baggot, OCP Architects, John McAslan & Partners, Art of Multimedia, Dr Bronwyn Bancroft and the team at Sydney Metro.” The winners will be announced at an Awards ceremony in Sydney on 17 May. 𝗖𝗢𝗔𝗦𝗧 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲, 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗻 In 1995 local people came together on the Isle of Arran to demand better protection for their marine environment. The Community Of Arran Seabed Trust (COAST) was set up and successfully campaigned for the creation of marine reserves in Lamlash Bay and around South Arran. Marine wildlife has recovered dramatically in these areas, supporting COAST’s mission to protect and restore sea life and sustainable livelihoods for the benefit of all. We are proud to have been commissioned to develop an interpretation strategy for a new COAST Marine Centre in Lamlash Bay. Working with Ruby Tiger, Wil Tunnel Architects, Chris Burnett Associates, and Focus, we have just held an initial round of site visits andworkshops to get the project underway. Il meteo piuttosto piovoso della giornata di ieri, 10 aprile, non ha pregiudicato l'attività con la classe 1B, della Scuola secondaria di primo grado, “P. Brolis” di Mozzo, ultimo incontro della settimana, in ordine cronologico. Anzi! . L'incontro in classe con uno dei testimonial del progetto #mozzorisuona, per questa terza giornata, è stato con Marcella Cortinovis, che ha raccontato la sua esperienza anche di cittadina di Mozzo, spronando gli studenti a ricercare il più possibile momenti durante i quali stare all'aria aperta e in Natura, ma anche ad avere un animo curioso, osservatore e predisposto alla meraviglia. . Il "piano b", causa pioggia, ci ha consentito di approfondire e di esplorare maggiormente alcuni spazi molto prossimi alla scuola, come ad esempio la Biblioteca, dove abbiamo potuto incontrare e fare una breve intervista alla bibliotecaria Monica e a Ferruccio, volontario in biblioteca ma anche GEV che accompagna sopratutto le scuole primarie in percorsi di educazione ambientale. . Un altro spazio esplorato ieri è stato il Parco Lochis, dove, tra l'altro, abbiamo allenato lo sguardo ad osservare con attenzione e provato a modificare il nostro punto di vista. . Nelle prossime settimane, grazie a tutti i materiali rilevati, ragazze e ragazzi saranno impegnati durante alcune ore in classe a mettere a punto gli elaborati finali, per i quali faranno anche un lavoro interdisciplinare che coinvolgerà diverse materie. . The pulpit has a dominating presence in our main gallery and is a symbol of the power structures that existed between landowners, the Church of Scotland, and the people during the time of the Highland Clearances. Rev David Mackenzie was appointed Minister at Farr in 1815 having been 'presented' to his new congregation by their landlord, the Marquis of Stafford, through the system of Patronage. Literally in the pay of the Sutherland Estate, who provided his stipend, Mackenzie was tasked with supporting the Estate's messaging of agricultural improvement and as a Gaelic speaker translated removal notices to his parishoners. The question of how we interpret the pulpit, which takes up a significant amount of space, was a challenge readily and successfully met by our museum interpretation team from Abound Design and Interpretation and CMC Associates. Using first hand accounts of the removals we recruited local people to give voice to the dispossesed but how to visually represent the folk giving these heart wrenching accounts of injustice and powerlessness? CMC Associates explain: "The powerful have their portraits painted. The rural poor are lucky if they figure in a tableau. While visitors listened to their accounts, we wanted to project the faces of the evicted onto the minister’s pulpit. We needed to add a suite of powerful new portraits and as an experiment we turned to AI software. We fed in the information we knew about the witnesses and evicted, including occupations and age at the time of the clearances. This was cross referenced with painting styles from carefully selected contemporary artists, lighting and desired expression to help generate suitable portraits. Finally, Photoshop was used to adjust the colours and add in extra details, like the Macdonald tartan. As you can see the results can be impressive but they take time and skill.'' Our #TEHIC team had an incredible experience at the "Museum Mediation And Heritage Interpretation – European Experiences" conference in Lisbon! 🇵🇹 🏛️ We were honoured to be part of this event organised by our local partner @mapadasideias at the Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência (@muhnac). Ieri, 3 aprile, la prima giornata di incontri in presenza con le classi Prima A, Prima B e Prima C della Scuola secondaria di primo grado, “P. Brolis” di Mozzo. . I ragazzi sono stati coinvolti in alcune attività con la modalità del world cafè e, fin da subito, hanno dimostrato, oltre a curiosità e partecipazione, già un ottimo livello di conoscenza del territorio che abitano e che frequentano! . Come era già successo nei precedenti incontri con il progetto #mozzorisuona, che ha visto coinvolto un gruppo di cittadini tra "adulti" e "senior", anche con questi ragazzi è stato difficile non emozionarsi per alcune loro osservazioni e riflessioni. . L'appuntamento è ora per la prossima settimana, durante il quale le classi saranno coinvolte in una passeggiata sopralluogo e alcuni laboratori. . Un sentito grazie va anche alle professoresse, per la loro importantissima collaborazione e per aver creduto in questo progetto. . Călătoria fagilor seculari de la Nucșoara continuă. De data aceasta, povestea lor s-a auzit în Koper, Slovenia, la conferința internațională Interpret Europe (IE). Am mers să aflăm cum putem crea o experiență deplină de vizitare prin interpretarea patrimoniului cultural și natural. Să citești informații de pe un panou nu mai e suficient pentru a crea o conexiune. Peste 100 de oameni din toată lumea, specialiști interpreți și arhitecți, au participat la conferință. V Kopru je med 21. in 24. marcem potekala mednarodna konferenca o interpretaciji dediščine, ki sta jo pripravili prva slovenska Unescova katedra na področju humanistike na Fakulteti za humanistične študije @upr.si in evropsko združenje Interpret Europe s podporo Slovenske nacionalne komisije za Unesco 🏛 Na njej je sodelovala tudi generalna direktorica Direktorata za kulturno dediščino Špela Spanžel. V uvodnem predavanju ob odprtju konference je poudarila močno družbeno, okoljsko, izobraževalno, emocionalno in estetsko razsežnost dediščine. Kakor izhaja tudi iz naslova konference, ima dediščina potencial spreminjati uveljavljeno miselnost in prepričanja. Zahvalila se je organizatorjem za organiziranje mednarodne konference in spomnila na prejšnja sodelovanja, ko smo ob 50-letnici Konvencije o svetovni kulturni in naravni dediščini izvedli mednarodno delavnico upravljavcev Svetovne dediščine ali mednarodni posvet o arhitekturni dediščini 20. stoletja s poudarkom na upravljanju in presoji vplivov posegov na arhitekturno dediščino. Navezala se je na sporočila osrednjih govorcev, izpostavila interpretacijo kot povezavo med ljudmi in prostori dediščine, pomen skupnosti in pozitivno naracijo o dediščini, ki jo omogočajo interpretatorji. Skupaj s prof. _ Jack’s Magazine, situated on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, was initially established in 1878 with the primary purpose of securely storing gunpowder imported into the colony of Victoria. The Victorian Government appointed @workingheritage to manage Jack’s Magazine in 2015. Since then, Working Heritage has actively worked towards revitalising the property and transforming it into a vibrant economic and community space consistently accessible to the public. As part of the comprehensive revitalisation plan, Micio designed and implemented new wayfinding, interpretive signage, and heritage plaques onsite to provide visitors with informative and engaging experiences.
