This fish was caught on a Megabass Orochii XX Whipsnake, Shimano Essence C3000MHG, 10 lb powerpro braid, and a @bfishntackle Moxie. Iowa grows em huge! Hybrid striped bass are such a cool species for many reasons. Voracious eating habits, ability to burn line off the reel, and willingness to eat on the surface make them great targets. New scientific note "A Prolonged Bite by a Western Whipsnake, Hierophis viridiflavus carbonarius (Bonaparte 1833) (Squamata: Colubridae), Resulting in Pronounced Local Edema" The Western Whipsnake is a colubrid traditionally considered non-venomous, known to have larger posterior maxillary teeth (Racca et al., 2020), and Duvernoy's glands (Phisalix, 1922; Taub, 1967). However, recent studies on the physiology of these glands and saliva components are lacking. It is a widely encountered species, notorious for its propensity to bite; most handlers have likely experienced multiple bites, typically resulting in minor injuries (aside from the small wounds left by the teeth). Nevertheless, dated evidence suggests that the saliva of the green whip snake can be highly toxic to certain animals (e.g., guinea pigs; Phisalix & Caius, 1916). Furthermore, a case of prolonged bite to a human was reported in 2015, accompanied by symptoms suggestive of neurotoxicity. However, the patient's blood alcohol levels could have influenced the condition, thus rendering the case less statistically significant. Herein, we describe a case of prolonged green whip snake bite occurring in Italy. For those interested in reading about the ensuing symptoms, the paper is freely accessible on my ResearchGate page. So, do bites from adult H. viridiflavus individuals lead to consequences in humans? The case data are still too limited to make a definitive statement. Moreover, the understandably limited attention given to bites from "non-dangerous" snakes leads to these cases being overlooked even in clinical/laboratory investigations. In conclusion, the advice (though obvious) is to avoid bites from any snake species, especially prolonged ones (which often occur voluntarily, e.g., out of curiosity among enthusiasts). Regardless of the more or less toxic effects of the saliva, this approach also avoids potential complications due to infections. Chironius fuscus - Brown Whipsnake, Brown Sipo, Olive Whipsnake. On our first day in Peru, during a boat tour, we saw about 4 or 5 specimens of Chironius represented by 2 species. Chironius scurrulus and Chironius fuscus. The Brown whip snake was the more common of the whip snakes in the area. Whip snakes are fast moving, diurnal hunters which feed on reptiles and amphibian prey. These non venomous snakes were easily seen in low shrubs, dense vegetation and the river banks of the tributaries in the amazon. Most specimens we encountered were 3-4 feet in length although there was a sighting of a large 7-8 foot (approx) specimen in a tangle of vines one afternoon. Any photographer will tell you how bitey they are and how much fun it is to photograph these snakes. Sonoran Whipsnake (Masticophis bilineatus) In Arizona there are three whipsnakes species, the Striped Whipsnake, Coach Whipsnake, and Sonoran Whipsnake. And a little mental achievement is having caught all three. All three Species are not typically hard to find, however sometimes they can prove to be hard to catch. By the age of probably 15 I had already caught two of the three species numerous times. I figured the Sonoran whip would come soon thereafter to finish out the AZ Whipsnake trifecta. Oh how I was wrong and for ten whole years I would only catch fading glimpses of bilineatus, and watch too many individuals vanish off the sides of roads. I was starting to think I’d never get to see one of these beauties in my hand. But finally just a few days ago on a successful afternoon hike with the crew @oasis_herping casually flips this snake under a rock on our way back to our cars. A (red-headed) olive/brown #whipsnake #chironius #fuscus This was one of two individuals spotted during our first boat ride down the #amazonbasin on the second day of our trip. This guy (or gal) earned his place with us due to his red coloring, while his compatriot (not pictured) was normally colored These #snakes are diurnal and semi-arboreal, known to be active exclusively on warmer days. When we found them, they would be basking earlier in the morning. The first one was on a tree branch above the river, this guy was on a river bank. After basking, they are highly active while foraging for food. They have aglyphous dentition, meaning their teeth lack are unable to deliver venom. This means that they simply overpower their prey and consume it quickly. They mostly eat frogs, but have also been documented eating smaller lizards, rodents and birds

These cute lil guys are a non-venomous colubrid species with large eyes, round pupils, and a high degree of visual activity that enables them to hunt and track lizards on the run. Whipsnakes have complex courtship rituals with males defending their territory against other males in elaborate combat dances. After mating occurs in spring, 3 to 12 eggs are laid, often in abandoned mammal burrows on south facing slopes. The pockets tall enough to fit a 4 piece paddle and clips closed. No side pockets, just 3 side compression straps and top compression. My, what big eyes you have 😳😳 - - The overflowing vegetation that crowds the sides of any forest path are often where a great many species can be found. On these impenetrable walls into the deeper jungle, slithers a myriad of reptiles one simply has to see to understand. One such species, thin as a spaghetti strand yet long as reins for a horse, is a Malayan vinesnake. Clad in a rich green livery and with a comically large head, it is often mistaken for it's more commonly seen relative, the oriental whip snake. However similar, this species is a much rarer find and with an easy capture, we were able to bring this curious little fellow down for a closer inspection. - The Malayan vinesnake though it may appear similar to the oriental whipsnake, is indeed is own species and occupies mature secondary and primary rainforest, disliking human disturbed habitats. The species is diurnal and hunts for frogs and lizards, using it's mild venom to subdue it's rather meager prey. The easiest physical difference between the two species to me is the size of the eye with my friend calling it the "big eyed whip snake" when I first saw it. There are other differences too, with the species lacking yellow markings by the flanks, attaining a greater length of 2m (6ft). When threatened, it is also capable of a slight colour change, whereby it exposes a set of darker scales on its body, appearing almost striped (second image). How this may intimidate an enemy to me however is unknown. Curiously, for a species dubbed as being uncommon yet not incredibly elusive that is the case for most of its ecology. We know precious little about its ecology, many often theorizing it is similar to that of the oriental whipsnake. This while not without it's merit, the two are related and share a similar ecological niche, it's just a theory. Just realized I never posted this incredible snake from a while ago. Coachwhips are in our opinion some of the most underrated snakes out there. Common, bitey, and a pain in the ass to get in hand, they're so variable and impressive when they're as large as this one. Also check out those pinks. Gorgeous. This one measured somewhere over 5', and was hanging out in the middle of the road in southern Arizona. Surprisingly, when we stopped for it, it didn't bolt, but instead chose to play dead the moment we picked it up. Playing dead is actually a not-uncommon threat response for Coachwhips, and this one was just one of several I've experienced who do it. We set it down a ways off the road, and I sat down next to it with my camera and waited. Probably 15-20 minutes passed before it started to slowly raise its head and look around. I managed a few pictures before it returned to playing dead. I wanted to get video of it disappearing into the thornscrub, but eventually got tired of waiting. I stood up, turned around for a second, turned back to look at it, and it had vanished, in the way that Coachwhips do. Love them. The first snake I caught in Arizona last summer was this gorgeous Sonoran whipsnake (Masticophis bilineatus). These snakes are diurnal, and spend much of their time actively hunting for lizards and birds, but they are known to feed on small mammals, amphibians and other snakes! As with many slender diurnal snakes, these guys are extremely fast, and thanks to their large eyes, these snakes can detect predators from quite some distance, which makes running after them quite challenging! One of the more common snakes in the lowlands was the Red-eyed Vine Snake (Ahaetulla cf. rufusoculara). We had dinner at McDonald’s, after which the guides brought us just across the street to look for these guys, and about 5 minutes in, we found one, along with other herps! Crazy how a random street in the middle of town can yield such variety already. Also correct me if I’m wrong on the following but until recently, this species was actually known as Big-eyed Whip Snakes (Ahaetulla mycterizans) in West Java.
