De lab lab boon, ook wel hyacintboon staat in bloei. Eigenlijk veel te vroeg, maar vorig jaar was ik wat laat met zaaien en te vroeg met buiten zetten, wat maakte dat hij amper gebloeid heeft. Pas eind zomer een enkel bloemetje. Nu eerder gezaaid, staan ze nog steeds bij mij op de vensterbank. Ze worden veel te groot en staan veel te vroeg in bloei! Dat was niet helemaal de bedoeling, maar het is voor deze tropische boon nog veel te koud om buiten uitgeplant te worden. Ik heb ze echt voor de mooie bloemen gezaaid. De bladeren en bloemen kun je eten, maar de bonen zijn giftig. Hyacinth bean or Lablab is so easy to grow from seed and a beautiful vining plant to cover large walls or arbors. All parts of this sprawling vine are beautiful but I’m especially fond of those gorgeous purple 💜 seed pods. I grow it every year from seed I collect the year before. While not absolutely necessary, an overnight soak in warm water softens the seed coat and speeds up germination. Never one for potting on, I prefer a larger seed starting cell and have had great luck with the jumbo seed starting trays from @vego_garden Air pruning strips along the sides of the cells prevent root girdling while optional seedling tray lids keep humidity 💦 locked inside for optimal germination. I wish I could find a pic of my hyacinth bean vines in flower 😕. You’ll have to trust me on this one. This year was my first year growing hyacinth bean, an ornamental vine. Since none of my stuff ever does spectacular (see previous post), I had contemplated planting 2 seeds (2 plants) here. Boy am I glad I didn't! The 2nd picture shows the vine from our balcony. One seed sown. It was a vigorous growing, flowered profusely, and tried to take over the Japanese maples and the other side of the arch! Legumes are excellent nitrogen fixers, and the salvia I had planted in front of this did better than any other in my lower garden this year. And the hummingbirds loved it! It was also quite drought tolerant once it was establish. It’s always interesting to work with what you have and after two frosty mornings this arrangement was a lot of fun to create with what was left undamaged. Unlike some of the obligatory holiday color palettes this was inspired by the purple hyacinth beans ( Lablab purpureus). There is a time and place for everything and while I prefer to use seasonal, local flowers I understand that some imports are necessary. However…Living in a mild climate makes seasonal flower arranging a lot easier. Hyacinth Bean Vine (Lablab purpureus) is an annual vine that puts on quite a show. Each seed will create a twining vine that will become 20 feet long. I bought my original seeds at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello about 20 years ago and have planted them almost every year.
