Hopefully, I've answered James's questions in a safe and supportive way using this #socialstory. I know that I've adjusted the dates a little, James craves certainty, and I hope that i won't be asleep for 3 weeks, but it gives James and myself something that feels safe, we can adjust dates as we go along. I've had a video call with him alongside my mum sharing it, he's told me he feels sad, asked me when I'll be 'very better' and then asked when I will be back to take him and his friend out. The impact of our caregivers cannot be overstated, teaching invaluable life lessons and instilling the confidence and good judgment necessary to mature into wise adults. A little dedication post to Nancy on #internationalsiblingsday Just under a year ago when Nancy was transitioning into primary school, someone referred to her as a young carer for the first time. It took me by surprise to hear her described in this way. It was a shock, and it winded me in the same way that you get when someone kicks a ball to your stomach. Probably because I felt sad or hurt to hear it put like that, but mainly because I had a sudden realisation it was true. It hadn’t occurred to me before. It actually brought me to tears. Truth be told I couldn’t get by on a day to day basis without Nancy’s help. By no fault of her own, she is by default a young carer to Sid. She doesn’t mind, she loves helping out and of course she knows no different. But the older she gets she is increasingly aware of the fact that Sidney relies on her, as do I. It doesn’t sit well with me, I really struggle to accept this at times. It doesn’t seem fair that she has to do all these extra things that other kids her age don’t. Not that she “has” to do these things, but that they are a natural part of our family life. But it’s something I’m learning to accept, and see as a positive. She was already a kind and caring little girl, but being a big sister to Sidney has definitely made her into an even more beautiful human than she already was. I often have people tell me what a great kid she is, which is a lovely thing to hear. Being a big sister to a brother with a diagnosis of SMA has and will continue to shape her life. I hope they always have the magical bond they do now. So here’s to Nancy pants, as she is called at home. Sidney’s incredible big sister. My little best friend. My old soul. My rock. Wise beyond your years. Always with your arm around him. Always letting him have his own way (even though you shouldn’t!) Always sharing, always giving him your last of anything you have. The sacrifices you’ve unknowingly had to make, and the things you have had to forgo without knowing, hurts my heart. We couldn’t be prouder of you. 💖 Happy National Siblings Day!! 💖 If you were lucky enough to have family holidays as a child I guess this will be most people's only or last experience of travelling with brothers & sisters. But have you been on holiday with your siblings as adults? I was so grateful to have my sister, brother in law, niece, nephews and parents with me to celebrate my 30th birthday in Portugal 🇵🇹 This was a real novelty to me as my birthday is nowhere near any school holidays and having gone straight into teaching after university I'd never been able to spend my birthday on a beach! A year after I quit teaching I got my wish with this trip! This was the last time we went abroad together but she's already worked out my 40th birthday falls on a Sunday and has suggested we go away together just the two of us to celebrate, and so I can show her how all this travelling stuff is done!! 😅 It's a few years away but I'm excited to plan that one!! From a young age she has experienced the trauma of seeing her brother having seizures and often helps support her brother with daily tasks. A beautiful moment after a seizure he had a few weeks ago, she stroked his hair and whispered gently to him, it's ok, Mummy, Daddy and Chloe are here, we love you and God loves you too ❤️😢 I know that when I'm no longer here, my daughter will be a fierce advocate for my son - sibling bonds are special and even though they fight, they love each other well too. Today is National siblings day…. & Boy do I have lots of them!!.. I’m Blessed to be part of a super big family.. There are big ones, small ones and In betweenies!! (But They stopped at me because , well… you can’t get any better than perfect.. can you ?? 😉 😂) When I was born a paediatric nurse said to my mum and dad that my development would suffer due to them being far too busy with the other children to give me the attention I would need 🙄 and that I would be more developmentally delayed with walking and talking as a result - That’s if I was even to communicate at all! not only did she write me off she judged our family at the same time… My siblings have helped my development immensely.. they help me, encourage me and support me.. not because they have to.. but because they want to.. we learn from each other. But sadly Just like that Dr, some People also assume that having a child with disabilities is a burden on other family members - but what about flipping that around and seeing things from a different perspective.. because when you do, you see that actually having a sibling with a disability brings a different sense of love, compassion and understanding to the mix.. I can’t repeat what my Mummy & Daddy said about the paediatrician as it contained strong language.. Being part of a big family is awesome… But it doesn’t matter if you’re in a big family or a small family - what matters is that you’re in a loving family.. & I definitely hit the jackpot with that one!! ( & I know they feel the same about me!) Liam & Jack were unable to take part in the photo, so there’s 2 more!! . My brothers belong to an amazing group called “the Pembrokeshire siblings group” - they are a charity that organises fun days and trips for siblings of children with disabilities… Mummy says we would be lost without them. Today, Wednesday 10th April, marks National Siblings Day 2024. It is a global awareness day recognising brothers and sisters and highlighting the important role siblings play in the lives of their disabled brothers and sisters. Crucially , this day aims to celebrate siblings in their own right too. At Action Duchenne, we want to acknowledge all of the amazing Duchenne siblings in our community. We see you. We see the things you experience that your peers don't, we see the sacrifices you make and the empathy and care you develop. We also recognise your value just as you are. She knows me well enough to know what I need to brighten my day and vice versa. From a young age she has developed maturely to understand my rare condition. I can not simply imagine a world without my sister." Photo 2 - Oscar and Dylan This is Oscar, 12 and Dylan 16. Oscar has NF2 related Schwannomatosis and his brother looks out for him, helps where needed and importantly fundraises to raise money for resesrch into new treatments or a cure into NF2. For his bronze DofE he raised over £10,000 and received an award from Nottingham Police. In May Dylan is trekking to raise even more funds. Photo 3 - Emily Livesey and her brother Tom. ✨️ #nationalsiblingsday2024 is a great opportunity to shine a light on the value of sibling relationships, to highlight what an important role siblings play in the lives of their disabled brothers and sisters and to celebrate siblings in their own right too. ✨️ Whilst it's a day to share positives, it's only right that we address some of the challenges families face too. It can be difficult for young siblings, if their brother/sister's medical needs are complex or they require a lot of care and supervision. It's only natural that this can lead to feelings of resentment and being ignored. It can also lead to parentification, whereby a lot of responsibility is placed on them to help care for their sibling or do more around the house, which can cause stress and further damage to the relationship. @sibscharity_uk have lots of resources to support young and adult siblings! 💜💛 When it comes to my own kids, I have four. India is the eldest at 12, she's disabled and uses a wheelchair full-time. Then I have Charlie age 8, Jack, 4 and Frankie 6 months. I can honestly say that so far I've not witnessed any real resentment between them, their relationships are relatively 'normal' in that they get on, until they fight or argue or wind each other up over daft stuff. I put some of this down to us as parents and have to give some credit to them 😎 We've always had open, neutral and age appropriate conversations about India's disabilities since they were old enough to understand. Charlie is able to show more patience and empathy when it's needed which is something I'm really proud of. He's emotionally very mature and caring. Jack is only 4 and at times he has outbursts when India's had my attention, but by explaining to him in simple terms why she needs it and that he will get my full attention shortly, this is usually overcome quickly. Charlie often says he's really happy when India can access something he and Jack can, and feels sad that she can't join in at softplays and sometimes parks. He's aware of ableism and also that it's not necessary to feel sorry for India, but to think about what we can do to make things accessible. ID in comments
