Wingtip Wednesday. Florsheim by McHale for my outdoor trekking. Made in London Ontario, and rebuilt by a cobbler from London Ontario. Gary Coakley @coakleysshoerepair (SSIA Bronze medalist) revived with new welts, JR soles, toe taps, and cat paw heels. Alberto Suastez @patinaworksarizona then applied his signature museum patina to give them a new look. Since I mostly work from home, I've created a separate, indoors only, WFH subset of footwear. Most have been converted to wedge soles for comfort. Gary rebuilt these 92604s with Vibram wedge soles, blue midoles, blue welt stitching, and some blue laces. They go nicely with today's San Martin time piece. The SM punches well above their weight. Excellent finishing quality and great attention to details. The Seiko movement speaks for itself. We are most honoured to feature our favourite computer art historian Catherine Mason @cathcomputerarthistory in our issue on ▪️digitalisation ▪️ Catherine's essay 'Creative Alliances: A Short History of the Artist and the Machine' is a recap of the early beginnings of digital art, which started already in the 1940s ⏰ In these early days of digital art, the machine was seen as a positive influence that offered completely new possibilities – unlike our currently mixed feelings about new tech 👾 Artists saw the computer as a tool to push the limits of art even further and revolutionise their practice. Given the frustration stemming from the use of new technologies (and AI in particular), Cath’s essay makes us wonder if we could learn from past examples and pacify our fear of technological advancements. According to the Tate, the term Brutalism “was coined by the British critic Reyner Banham to describe the approach to building associated with the architects Peter and Alison Smithson in the 1950s and 1960s.” The term originates from architect and painter Le Corbusier’s use of ‘beton brut’ – raw concrete. McHale 1922-1978 was an important figure in post war British art and design, a sociologist by training then after a year at Yale moved to America in 1952 to work with Buckminster Fuller. Inspired by Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s collaged #portraits and interiors, this collection display explores themes that relate to the body, domestic space, and the #collagetechnique. As in Akunyili Crosby’s practice, which is grounded in figures and materials of personal significance, the intimacy of these works creates new possibilities for #artisticexpression. Executed on a small scale that encourages close looking, each #artwork reveals a private world unique to the #artist. . Figures are rendered with informal familiarity, becoming vehicles for visual exploration. The Postwar Modern: New Art in Britain 1945 - 1965 show ended yesterday @barbicancentre. I meant to post this sooner but been having problems with Instagram- notifications and hashtags don’t work. I’ve reinstalled it, maybe I’m on the naughty step? These are mere trifles compared to what’s happening in the real world… The show opened a week after Russia invaded Ukraine, its a grim reminder of the aftermath of war and the horrors still happening today, not just in Ukraine but around the world. It featured artists living in Britain including refugees, immigrants and exiles who made new lives after fleeing the Nazis. The backdrop of the brutalist Barbican space was perfect, which was built after Cripplegate was badly bombed during the Blitz. The photography is powerful: A photo of Lee Miller definitely washing mud off in Hitler’s bath in Munich the same day he committed suicide. Or the photo of the children standing in the bombed out building in Bermondsey, which makes me think of my Dad. He stayed in London during the Blitz, he’d lost both his parents when small (Dad at Dunkirk and Mum to TB) so his Grandparents wanted him to stay put with them. He had quite a few stories including collecting buckets of shrapnel after bombings and getting a shilling from the police station for handing them in. PostWar Modern New Art in Britain 1945-65 Barbican Art Gallery, London -June 26 This group show explores the art produced in Britain in the wake of a cataclysmic war. Certainty was gone, and the aftershocks continued, but there was also hope for a better tomorrow. These conditions gave rise to an incredible richness of imagery, forms and materials in the years that followed.  Focusing on ‘the new’, Postwar Modern features 48 artists and around 200 works of painting, sculpture, photography, collage and installation. It explores the subjects that most preoccupied artists, among them the body, the post-atomic condition, the Blitzed streetscape, private relationships and imagined future horizons. As well as reconsidering well-known figures, the exhibition foregrounds artists who came to Britain as refugees from Nazism or as migrants from a crumbling empire, in addition to female artists who have tended to be overlooked. Postwar Modern: new art in Britain 1945-65 At the Barbican This exhibition of artists working in Britain in the years after the war has found its perfect venue at the Barbican, which itself was built in the 60s on a site that had suffered destruction during the Blitz. My impression of the exhibition was of a brown muddy mass with sharp metallic spikes, broken up by sudden pops of red like broken bodies or an irrepressible surge of life. Uncertainty. Exhaustion. Hope. Uprootedness. Fragility. Highlights: 1. John Bratby’s portrait of his wife Jean Cooke with a table covered in packaged food; a reflection on food rationing which continued till 1954, the year this painting was exhibited. 2. John Latham’s Full Stop: this picture makes me think of the Big Bang and creation, but also of atomic bombs and destruction. 3. A portrait done entirely in black paint, by Francis Souza (who grew up in Goa and experienced Partition before moving to London) 4. Lynn Chadwick’s huge Fisheater sculpture is mesmerising. I love Alexander Calder’s mobiles; this was similar but sharper, spikier, more threatening. Behind is Nigel Henderson’s botanical collage, which reminded me of Karl Blossfeld’s photographs. 5. Cyborgs: a family plugged into a tv screen in this painting/collage by John McHale 6. Vitality in the face of physical suffering with this ‘War Goddess’ bronze by William Turnbull that evokes ancient fertility figures, and in the background a painting by Franciszka Themerson ‘Voici un monsieur qui a été developé par l’état’ and ‘Topography of aloneness’ 7. This super show of post World War II British art (Postwar Modern: New Art in Britain 1946-1965) is full of names we don't see nearly enough. Starting with the (in my opinion) criminaly under-exhibited Francis Newton Souza. But all of these artists deserve the attention and respect this exhibition gives them. The show also includes some incredible photographs, children and teens mostly, playing and hanging out in bomb damaged British streets. Postwar Modern: New Art in Britain', handsomely installed and intelligently curated by a team led by Jane Alison, opened at Barbican Art Gallery on 3 March 2022 and runs until 26 June. It provides a fresh view of art made in the UK in the two decades immediately following the end of World War II, drawing together many artists who at the time would have been seen as marginal alongside now more familiar names from the period including Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Lucian Freud, Alan Davie, Victor Pasmore, Patrick Heron, Gillian Ayres, William Scott, Eduardo Paolozzi, William Turnbull, Richard Hamilton, John Bratby, Elizabeth Frink, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff. This is decidedly not a roll-call of famous artists, however, but an examination of themes common to the work of these artists interwoven with works by others who were perhaps undeservedly sidelined at the time because they were women, people of colour or immigrants from the Nazi-era European diaspora or other parts of the world. Among those making a strong impression are F. N. Souza, Frank Bowling, John McHale, Nigel Henderson, Franciszka Themerson, Kim Lim, Magda Cordell, Jean Cooke (a brilliant painter undeservedly in the shadow of John Bratby) and Sylvia Sleigh (with two revelatory early portraits of her partner, the celebrated critic Lawrence Alloway, in drag). When this exhibition was in the planning stages the curators could not have predicted how depressingly prescient it would prove of the ravages and human suffering wreaked by the war now being waged by Russia on Ukraine. It is impossible to view the scarred figures and bombed cityscapes that are among the most haunting images here without thinking of the harrowing disasters occurring yet again, more than half a century on from the most recent works displayed here. Much to enjoy at the current Barbican show - ‘Postwar Modern: New Art in Britain 1945-1965’. Our own recent existential challenges - not least, the most recent - enable a spontaneous insight into the psychological landscape from which much of the work sprang. Importantly, a number of significant contributions by overlooked artists from all sorts of constituencies, are given their rightful platform. The vibrancy and invention of 50s and 60s sculpture has never been more apparent; and I shall never quite get over encountering the fundamentalist Modernist Lawrence Alloway as a Renaissance-style bride (last image).
