Johnny Burnette & The Rock’n’Roll Trio “Rock’n’Roll Trío” 1956 Rock’n’Roll ••• A contemporary of Elvis Presley in the Memphis scene of the mid-‘50s, Johnny Burnette played a similar brand of fiery, spare wildman rockabilly. With his brother Dorsey (on bass) and guitarist Paul Burlison forming his Rock ‘n’ Roll Trio, he recorded a clutch of singles for Decca in 1956 and 1957 that achieved nothing more than regional success. Featuring the groundbreaking fuzzy tone of Burlison’s guitar, Johnny’s energetic vocals, and Dorsey’s slapping bass, these recordings — highlighted by the first rock & roll version of “Train Kept A-Rollin’” — compare well to the classic Sun rockabilly of the same era. The trio disbanded in 1957, and Johnny found pop success as a teen idol in the early ‘60s with hits like “You’re Sixteen” and “Dreamin’.” Burnette died in a boating accident in 1964. From back in the dawn of rock ‘n’ roll in the 1950s the rockabillies, the original wild men of rock and roll came pouring out the Southern backwoods, pounding on record company doors asking for auditions. For a brief, incandescent moment, it seemed that they were about to take over the western world. But by 1960, the rockabilly era was definitely over. But popular fashion runs in cycles, and rockabilly came back. Rockabilly’s influence on punk is incalculable, from Richard Hell writing in his memoir ‘I Dreamed I Was A Very Clean Tramp’ of tapping into its primal energy to the Sex Pistols covering Eddie Cochran classics. The Clash especially flashed a strong rockabilly yen: aping the first Elvis Presley album’s graphics for London Calling; adopting greasy ducktail haircuts and cat clothes; covering Vince Taylor’s ‘Brand New Cadillac,’. Hey, let's take a minute to remember Paul Burlison (Feb 4, 1929-Sept 2003). Not only did he work as an electrician for Crown Electric in Memphis with some snot nosed kid named Elvis but toured around as part of Johnny Burnette's Rock-n-Roll Trio scaring parents back in the day by playing a new fangled style of music called Rockabilly and helped invent the word "Teenager." In this photo during the "Kevin years" we gigged with Paul and Rocky Burnette in Pittsburgh December 11, 1997 and Paul was a gracious gentleman. Sure maybe the great Grady Martin did play a lot on those old Rock-n-Roll trio recordings but Paul was no slouch of a guitarist, was on those sessions too, put in the road miles, recorded an album with Los Lobos and ordered Elvis Presley around on the job site during his day job. Paul was a remarkable man so listen to some Johnny Burnette and Paul Burlison records tonight in your Saturday revelry will ya because tomorrow would've be his 95th birthday? (maths is hard)

Music made long before I was even born. 1956-1959. Rockabilly, Rhythm And Blues, and Rock And Roll. The Elvis one is his first LP for RCA, very first issue with a different pigment of pink printed on the sleeve. The Larry Williams is a recent find. The Lee Allen one was found a year ago in a dollar bin at an antique shop in San Dimas. For those that don’t know, Lee’s sax playing is all over other records in this very picture, as well as The Blasters later on. The Carl Perkins is his debut for Columbia, and rare as hell. The Link Wray is one of my favorite records of any era. The Blank sleeve is Eddie Cochran’s only LP released in his lifetime (see photo 2), and I’ve been trying to find a matching cover for 25 plus years to no avail. The Esquerita is a barn burning R&B masterpiece. The Gene Vincent one has some phenomenal vocals, from one of my favorite singers of all time. The Jerry Lee Lewis LP is his first for Sun. The Dale Hawkins is a Euro Repro circa 1974, as is the Johnny Burnette Trio. Both of these are extremely expensive if you can find an original, over $1,000. These boots will do. The Fats Domino is a killer. The Little Richard is his second LP on Specialty, and is as good as his debut. The Buddy Holly was released before he was famous, and by far the rarest piece in this photo. The Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley are both Black Label Chess versions. Johnny Burnette Best known for "Little Boy Sad" and "You're Sixteen" (You're Beautiful and Your Mine) the later of which, peaked on the U.S. charts at #8 in 1960.
