My favourite event of the year @brooklandsmuseum has to be the @vsccbulletin @thevscc Winter Driving Tests 🏁 For me, seeing pre-war cars competing against each other is the ultimate Brooklands experience. The VSCC does an amazing job organising this event and many others around the country. I wish Brooklands had more events like this that really captures what Brooklands was built for. Throwback to 2019. My father drives our 1934 Jowett Long Saloon through Farnham town centre in Surrey. The original owner, Miss Westbrook, purchased the car new from Barnett & Small in Farnham, who were a Jowett main dealer. The garage is still there today but is now a VW dealership. Today, we're parked outside the former Star Inn ⭐️ The small village of Bentworth in Hampshire didn't have just one pub but three! They were known as the Sun☀️, Star ⭐️and Moon🌛(sometimes half-moon). The Moon was destroyed by fire in the 1950s, but luckily, The Sun Inn survives today. As for the Star, it closed for business in 2015 and has been empty ever since. There have been talks of turning it into a post office and for residential use. I can see why local pubs struggle to survive, especially with the price of a pint today, but it's still sad to see empty buildings like this. Built around 1834 and once the heart of the community. A few more images from yesterday's trip to the village of Chawton. 🍂 . The original owner of our 1934 Jowett Long Saloon had relatives who lived in Chawton. This car would have been a familiar sight in the village from the 1930s, right up until the 1970s! It was at that time that the car failed its MOT and was laid up in a field. Around 10 years later, it was saved by my father and restored to the condition you see it in today. It's amazing to think it was restored over 30 years ago! For me, knowing and recording the history of a historic vehicle is just as important as keeping it maintained and on the road. Sadly, there are many vehicles out there that have lost their history and with today's data protection, it can be almost impossible to trace. Luckily, we know all the history of our Jowett. . The lady pictured sitting in our 1934 Jowett Long Saloon is Joyce Kemp, niece of the original owner Ena Westbrook. Joyce was browsing through some of Ena's old driving licences and reminiscing about her time as a passenger in the car. Joyce remembers travelling to market with her Auntie Ena on several occasions. The second image (below) shows a much younger Joyce Kemp with her father and brother. The third image shows Ena Westbrook driving a Fordson tractor on her farm in Lower Froyle. . Joyce Kemp told this lovely anecdote, which, I believe, sums up a lot of people’s attitude during war time. She remembers, “how everyone worked hard to help keep Britain fed. They often worked on even when the sirens had sounded. They were used to carrying on in bad weather so they were not going to stop for a few bombs! One day, during the war, Auntie Ena called in to see us in Alton after her usual trip to market. We were chatting with friends about the bombs which had dropped nearby in the night. “Well, I can’t stand here talking” Aunty said “I’ve got a load of logs to move”, and off she went, A friend of ours remarked “Hitler doesn’t stand a chance - not while there are people about like your Aunt! . Took our 1934 Jowett Long Saloon for a run today. Although technically not vintage having been built after 1930, it does feel vintage to drive. The pedals have the configuration of throttle in the middle and brake on the right. The handbrake is on the right, but it does have four wheel braking. It has a full crash gearbox but with the luxury of a forth gear! (earlier models only had three) The design of the flat-twin engine fitted dates from around 1910. With a very long stroke, the engine has a distinctive sound and is driven at much lower revs than a modern engine. At only 907cc, the little engine has a lot of weight to pull with four adults in the car. It may not be quick, but it'll always get you home. . A Little from Neil & the Jowett Club - JOWETT CAR CLUB CENTENARY YEAR 2023 (The oldest one-make car club in the world) The magazine Light Car & Cycle Car dated 31st August 1923 carried a report on the founding of The Southern Jowett Light Car Club. This had taken place during a "Successful Inaugural Rally of London Owners" at Titsey Hill in Surrey on 27th August. In fact this was not the very first, or only, Jowett car club. On 12th May 1922 notice appeared in the Bradford Telegraph & Argus of a run the following day of Jowett cars from Manningham Park to Boroughbridge where a club would be set up and more Jowett clubs were subsequently set up elsewhere. During World War 2 most such car clubs were wound up for the duration; not so the Southern Jowett club. Membership was maintained throughout and on through the 'fifties. In 1964, in recognition that membership was now worldwide, the name was changed to the Jowett Car Club. 🇬🇧1952 JOWETT JUPITER – near Concours Condition🇬🇧 Introduced in 1950, the stylish Jowett Jupiter used the same power train as its sibling, the Javelin saloon - this being the fastest 1.5 litre saloon of its period. With aluminium coachwork on a steel frame, the Jupiter weighed in at 2,100 lbs, which meant brisk performance and a maximum speed of around 90 mph from the flat four engine. Unusual for a sports car at this time, the Jupiter boasted windup windows which made for a more weatherproof and comfortable cockpit. Approximately 900 examples of the Jupiter were produced, with production finishing in 1954. Restored to near concours condition and bearing the distinctive registration number VEV 21, this car, Chassis number 668, body number 459, was dry stored in a garage from the early 1970’s until 2010. The car was dismantled, the chassis sand blasted and repainted, the aluminium body, doors, bonnet and wings repaired by a professional classic car bodywork specialist. She was resprayed from bare metal in a unique period Ivory colour, the interior trim was replaced with ruby red leather, door cards and the dashboard was newly fabricated along with new carpets and hood. All instrumentation was refurbished by Speedograph Richfield. There is a period radio and the steering wheel was restored along with all brightwork which has been rechromed or replaced. There are two good car clubs for support, Jowett Car Club and Jupiter Owners Auto Club, both have a large stock of spares and technical know-how available to members. The Jowett Jupiter....... .....the first photograph showing MOE87, my Uncle Malcolm's BRG Jupiter, the photo taken 40 years ago in front of the old works, my uncle's father Bill Farrar standing with the car along with other club members, old Jowett employees and Ed Nankivell, who has written several books on the Jowett. .......this first photograph was a recreation of the second photo taken in 1950 of significant Jowett employees stood in exactly the same location behind a similar Jupiter. The Jowett Jupiter was a British sports car built in the late 40s / early 50s, produced at a factory in Idle near Bradford, West Yorkshire. This was a sports version of the popular Javelin saloon car. A race version of the Jupiter won its class at Le Mans. Sadly, great uncle Bill passed away less than a year after this picture was taken, it was an honour to have known him, I was only a teenager at the time. If you do not know about Jowetts, dont worry, you are not on your own. Today, we visit the site of 'Buggleskelly' station🚂 In reality this was 'Cliddesden' station on the Basingstoke and Alton Light Railway. After the line closed in 1936, it was used for the filming of 'Oh Mr Porter' starring Will Hay, Graham Moffatt and Moore Marriott. The film was set in Northern Ireland but nothing was actually filmed there. Instead, 'Cliddesden' became the fictional 'Buggleskelly' for 2 months during filming in 1937. . In 2018 the Will Hay Appreciation Society along with Pete Waterman unveiled a memorial bench in the village of Cliddesden. . Please swipe ⬅️ for more images. . A slightly different post today being #internationalwomensday This is Miss Ena Westbrook of Lower Froyle, Hampshire on her Fordson tractor in the 1930's. Miss Westbrook was the original owner of our 1934 Jowett Long Saloon, having owned it from new until 1983. Miss Westbrook ran her own farm. She worked long hours, all the hours of day light. She made butter, reared poultry, milked cows and looked after other people’s horses. Ena was also a very active land girl during WWII. Ena sadly passed away before I was born but she is still fondly remembered in the village where she lived. Fantastic day @brooklandsmuseum with the @vsccbulletin Driving Tests🏁 Had an early start with frost cover over our 1934 Jowett Long Saloon. After a 70 mile round trip today, I can say the car is running like a Singer sewing machine!👌 Superb display of vehicles all gleaming away in the sunshine, with most in action throughout the day. Wonderful day yesterday meeting up with members of the Jowett Car Club Southern section. The gathering was arranged at a village hall in North Hampshire and was great to meet one lovely couple, that had travelled up from Devon in a modern (their Bradford van is currently mid-restoration). Yesterday we celebrated the life of my wonderful grandfather Roy Armstrong, who sadly passed away on the 4th July 2020 age 97. My grandfather had a very active life and was a sociable person getting involved in many local community events. He loved sport, cars and was very proud of his family history. President of his local Royal British Leigion branch in Frensham and served in the RAF during WW2. His skill in repairing car bodywork was at the higest level having worked for E.D.Abbott's, Dennis, Thornycroft and personally knowing Leslie Hawthorn and his son Mike, undertaking work for Tourist trophy garage, Farnham. Eventually he set up his own workshop in Frensham. This is where he helped his son Alan (my father) restore our 1934 Jowett Long Saloon. At the time of his passing, he had been married to my grandmother (Jean) for almost 73 years! Today should have been the Bean Car Club's annual Daffodil Run in aid of Marie Curie. This is one of our favourite events of the year and is very popular, with a wide range of pre-1940 cars. The run normally starts in Heckfield and follows a suggested route to Stockbridge for coffee and then on to the Alice Lisle pub in the New Forest for lunch. This is the last weekend that 1923 built 'Flying Scotsman' is running @thewatercressline and I really wanted to get a photo of the loco next to our 1933 Jowett Long Saloon. The history of these two couldn't be more different, with the Jowett having always lived in the Hampshire area with one lady owner from new, to 'Flying Scotsman' having had many owners, travelled the world and broken several records. Our Jowett may not have had the glamorous lifestyle of 'Flying Scotsman' but it has always been well loved and is a good strong, reliable motor car.
